Simply jumping from one star to another, regardless of jump range, does not encompass all that exploration could or should be. Or to put it another way: It's not always the journey that counts. Sometimes it's the destination. Prior to embarking on the Cassiopeia Project I conducted a survey of several known SNRS (supernova remnants) around our galaxy. The purpose of this journey was to find analogs for Cassiopeia A and apply that research to locating the Cas A SNR. I didn't care about exploring any of the stars aside from the SNRS themselves and so my focus was on getting to the SNRS as quickly as possible. I wanted a high jump range for this task. After this preliminary research the members of the Cassiopeia Project and I embarked on the actual mission of trying to locate systems that closely match what we would expect to see if Cassiopeia A existed in the game. We identified our search corridor and set out. A small jump range would have only hindered the search as the beginning of this corridor is...

I appreciate that. Wish more people could have this kind of outlook. As I see it, the main appeal of Calonia and the like is the fact that it is far away. Players don't really need to go there for any reason beyond wanting to get away from the bubble, so I don't see why the journey should be made more trivial. It's easy enough to reach everything you need to advance in and play the game already. If there's something too far away for you to want to bother reaching it, don't worry about it. Not all the game content has to be catering to you specifically. Some people like having a bit of an endurance challenge and sense of accomplishment.

They were a bit of a danger to me during my expedition to Sgr A back in 3301 before I learned to throttle back before and during jumps. Before then I ended up running into a few of them, not having enough time to throttle back before getting knocked out of supercruise once landing the jump on the other end. Ended up taking a few percentage of hull damaged just from black holes and a few from neutron stars, though as I recall they tended to be less dangerous then since you could more easily see them to move your ship away. Now you can just choose whichever star types you want to jump to whenever you like. No need to even really worry much about fuel and scoopable stars now.

I made my money at Quince without board switching. Does that mean I didn't use an "exploit"?

Fair enough. I can understand the appeal of testing the capabilities of your gear. Just making sure we're all on the same page, as it were. Cheers.

Loved that movie as a kid. That old western robot kind of grated on my nerves a bit though. Those days black holes seemed just as sci-fi as real though. Looking back on that model now, it looks too much like a drain. It relies too heavily on a 2D model of space. Ah, but it sure was captivating back then, wasn't it? :)

Hmm... After giving it more thought than I likely should have, yes, it does seem a little questionable to fancy one's own creation. I based my avatar on how I look though, since I more or less play the game as myself if I were a Commander in the Pilots Federation in the 34th century. So for me it would be pretty narcissistic either way. 2 cents worth. YMMV

Credit "exploits" used to be the biggest exploit in the game. Engineers rendered credit exploits next to meaningless. Simply having enough credits to A-Rate the biggest and baddest ships in the game is no longer enough to turn the tide during a battle with another player. I actually did the Quince thing long enough to earn 100 million credits. Credits I still haven't used or needed. It was a boring and repetitive experience that I'd not want to repeat. If Frontier wants those credits back along with anything I bought since earning them ... then they can have them. It wouldn't effect my game at all. If however Quince is "working as intended" then I'd suggest that Frontier simply add a button to instantly generate a million credits on demand. That would be more fun then Quince. Better yet: Open up an in-game casino where you can ante-up and try your hand at earning credits via random chance. Most of the code needed for casino-like games of chance are already built into the game so why not invest that...

Unlike black holes though, there's no real reason (known mechanism) for wormholes to exist, not in the conventional sci-fi sense, at any rate. They don't exist in generally accepted theory (working model) either, just the musings of some physicists and sci-fi buffs, naturally.

Yes, but I wouldn't mind being able to somehow use Sgr A* to slingshot myself to the Large Magellanic Cloud. I dream of exploring the Tarantula Nebula, RMC 136a1, etc. Wait, how far was the jump Jaques tried to do again? I'll have to have a talk with him next time I see him and ask about hitching a ride. Don't think he'd mind all that much. After all, I did help repair his station.

Yes, I have sent him a empty box of PG Tips as well a child's shrimping net followed by a strongly worded letter demanding he get to Boston and start recovering all the tea they wantonly wasted.

Pretty sure the tier 5 FSD mod on my Vulture that I posted in the build link for the ship isn't something someone would consider being up for contention either way, unfortunately – it certainly isn't breaking any records. But hey, at least it manages to save me a bit of power too. It was the first tier 5 FSD mod I did, and I've only bothered with doing one roll per ship so far, naturally without exploiting, of course.

Months before the Zurara was discovered Drew revealed that the Formidine Rift mystery had been "enhanced" to take advantage of new features available in the game and to make it something bigger then it initially was when released in Gamma. This was never intended to be a Rubik's Cube type puzzle to solve. It was always intended to be part of a a narrative ... one that got sidetracked by Frontier's focus on other elements of gameplay (i.e. PowerPlay) over and above the desire to tell a consistent and compelling story via GalNet. I fear that Frontier still hasn't figured out the proper pace for story telling but that's a different discussion. As for "covering up for Drew" ... even if the worse accusations are true and there was nothing to be found out there until 2.3 was released you are pointing fingers at the wrong person. If Frontier didn't have anything out there then Drew was as much a victim as anyone else. If you've paid close attention though I think that it's pretty obvious that there always was...

    Hi Drew,

Thank you so much for all your involvement with Elite Dangerous and the recent Salome event. I have thoroughly enjoyed all the twists, plots and clues here on the forums and in game that you have been involved with, they have added greatly to my enjoyment of the game and added considerable depth to it.

Good luck in the future and I hope to see your continued participation in this great game, I have enjoyed since 1985.

  2. Howdy! I just finished your first ED book (I bought ebook and Audible) and enjoyed it very much. I'm a PS4 owner, so your book was a great intro to ED universe while I wait my turn to climb into the cockpit. Thanks!
