    That was an interesting article, thanks for the link Fuzzy. I wonder what the conservative thinkers in this thread think about the analysis on morality in it. I'm going to try and puzzle out how it applies to a pluralistic, multi-party system like we have in Finland.

    Greetings PS4 Commanders, At 10am BST today we made a quick hotfix live that addressed the following problems: - Fixed various game crashing issues. - Fixed an issue where the Horizons Season Pass could not be shared by a Primary PlayStation 4 account. - Added a speculative disconnections/connectivity fix This shouldn't affect any other platforms.     Realize, advocating for 2nd player accounts is tantamount to being pro murder hobo. The main reason that senseless griefing is as low as it is (and it is quite low by MMO standards) is because we cannot just jump on another character without buying a whole other copy of the game. Hence people who don't want to be hated have be good all the time, not just when they are on their white hat account.

    This isn't actually the case - I use VESA AV pole mounts to place the bases of my CH hotas in front of and below the level of the armrests, pretty much level with my knees. The grips are therefore exactly in the resting positions of my hands on the arm rests, and my shoulders are in a neutral position. Placed on the desk, I had to lift my shoulders to hold the hotas grips, and started getting shoulder pain. It's gone away now it's in an ergonomic position. BTW, for SRV piloting, I use the somewhat unorthodox combination of pedals: steering, pedal toe brake: thrust, CH throttle ministick: pitch/roll thrusters, main joystick: turret. Perhaps this would reduce your hand workload in most situations too?

    You know, babelfisch, this is what PG was originally intended for. Small groups either having at it, or not, at their discression. I don't sit here and bag out solo players for playing solo. Or PG. Fly whatever mode works for you. But this angsty garbage about how people should play in Open is older than my birth certificate. Move on. No one cares. Least of all the developer. Who could make changes, but has elected not to. If open isn't one person's thing? Fair enough. Pretty sure folks can make that decision for themselves, without being endlessly PVL'd to death (player versus lecture). We have a gigantic endless hotel thread for that - take it there. The lecture ganking. It's become a thing; good lord.

    That's debatable. Frontier have in fact responded to the whims of the player base and forums on more than one occasion. To be fair if you are on the winning side of any change, you get to write the history, or the perceived degree of "whim", so.. ;) I too have hope for the game's future; preferably one where we have the ability, however minor, to effect global change over time. It's not healthy for the future for the game to become stale. Something there is a genuine risk of. The BGS is a frightening beast and capable of much more. Ziljan raises a great point. I think this is where a lot of player restlessness can come from. The slow realisation that nothing matters. It should. Even in the smallest sense. It's not an easy road Frontier are on, but I am truely glad they keep trying.

    Would be great if players were given more levers and pulleys for sure. And more meaningful consequences to things like BGS actions, and better bonuses for being allied, bigger negatives for crimes committed, being in control of more systems, integrated colonization mechanics, population increases/decreases from immigration/emmigration/death/war/plague, etc. And perhaps most importantly, the ability to grow the wealth and power of a system, semi-permanently upgrade the station offerings and economics, downgrade it as well during rough times. The current BGS system has more depth, complexity, and inputs than many people give it credit. In fact, the woven threads of the BGS create a dance that is a thing of beauty. However, the outputs are so mild that it's often hard to tell when a system in a certain state without checking the system map, or the faction status in the system info tab. I would say that the BGS definitely needs bigger more dramatic swings, and even more levers, and more outputs. I...

    Sure. But the former, is what engages people. The latter, is simply the delivery method. A universe full of vibrancy and urgency and many layers of amazing mechanics - is still essentially empty - if players aren't represented and they can't, ultimately, affect any of it. Perhaps this is the same coin, from two different sides. It's been truely refreshing to discuss this, over the more typical fare this forum tends to cough up.

    @Howard: Would it be possible to write current state information for a Community Goal that the CMDR is signed up to when the relevant page in the Left HUD or in the Missions dock menu is viewed? The following would be great: 1) Community Goal Name; 2) CG System; 3) CG Dock; 4) CG Start time / date; 5) CG End time / date; 6) Current Tier;

    Yeah look I think there is some reasonable expectation for paid slots, given they aren't charging up to hundreds of dollars per expansion, that Triple A houses often do. Console peasants (I count myself as one) may get more accounts, but we often pay a lot more for the privilege. Games are typically more expensive, and the live/ ps online subs are an ongoing commitment. So yeah, I have no problem with free slots I guess? But I don't have a problem with frontier charging a small fee for a couple extra slots. If we could share cosmetics across the various commanders, which is a good example you offer, I think that's pretty reasonable. It's not really much in the way of "faffing" really; I just have three copies of the launcher, named against the commander, and it saves the login for each, in my case. I think it would be great to be able to purchase a couple slots per account, for like 9 bucks or something. Good balance between the developer getting some residual income (along with cosmetics) and...

    Nothing new in that approach - it was done a long time ago (with assorted cargoes) and brought about a 20t cargo in space limit in busy locations.... .... the blizzard of white dots on the scanner from a full load of Type-9 (or two) cargo in and around a station was quite something to see though (and quite something to navigate through).

I think? ;) In the real life universe, what we do at a universe scale doesn't really change anything, but we're doing a great job of a once-over on the planet, and cthulhu knows what we'd do to other planets. But that's beside the point; the game acts as though we can essentially do whatever we like, but the points don't matter. You can shoot people. Only they get up again. You can flip a system. But it'll flip back all by itself. You can drive a PP faction to the edge, but you can't actually defeat it. Nothing matters. What we're doing, now, here? In reality? Matters. It's just the scale that changes. But in game? Nothing matters. Regardless of the scale. There's a fundamental difference there. In short; there are no consequences. When there is no consequence, no sense of agency, no, uh, 'skin in the game', it feels empty. The only thing that has rekindled some of that, for me at least, is having a hard-mode account. But even that, is more about artificial increase in risk and excitement...

    Because, essentially, it's window dressing to the backdrop. It's absent because all the other things that give players agency are absent, as the scenery and set-pieces have been centre stage. It's almost as though the game was built to play itself. It's certainly able to operate, without any players present at all. A self-contained microcosm. Because it's never needed to be, to function. What we do, fundimentally doesn't matter. There are no real consequences. Yes you can flip systems, or scan stars or seek blood for the blood god on behalf of some major power. But none of it matters. Because there's no lasting impact. It's all set pieces. We could all immediately stop playing and the universe servers would tick along fine, systems would occasionally flip states, mission boards would keep refreshing, market goods would ebb and flow. The game doesn't need us to function. That's the reality. We are an optional input. Everything is more or less pre-ordained. Even the Thargoid stuff. It's all set...

    It's a bit of an oversimplification. The platform forces some 'choices' on the developer. And that's true for all that try to accomodate console players. I'm all for another slot, but I'm okay with it being a small fee. However I think those asking essentially want it 'for free'. It's important to remember that console players on both platforms must pay a (periodic) subscription fee to gain access to multiplayer such as open, so since they have to pay a tax to access the road, so should we. Again, this isn't being unreasonable. It can be paltry, like US $7-9 per slot or something, for a limited number of slots (eg 2-3). I'm pretty sure those who want everything to be free always won't pay that either, and continue to complain, which makes the question more is this just about some believed implicit right to free stuff, or actually wanting inexpensive 'alt' account access? There's one way to find out. Inexpensive additional commander slots.
