Nope. Calculated from the centre of the camera. Remember the head bob stuff and what CR was trying to achieve with that? And the "you control the pilot controlling the ship" stuff? So that, for the guns.

I agree with you on that, the bit about CR wanting bullet trajectories calculated from the weapon barrels certainly is laughable because it's absolutely true. It's like the snoopy caps, and the other stuff that drove the whole art team to walk out that one time.

That's a topic for a completely different thread (i.e. it has already been running for some considerable time)....

Someone asked me how to do this today. On reviewing the thread, I found I hadn't done HellaKitty as requested. So here she is:

That is one way of approaching it. A different way might be to allow substitution of materials / elements / data for others in the same "group", as I proposed here:

These are pretty good, in my opinion - and the low "stick-out" makes them unlikely to be broken off when sticking out of an accessible USB socket:

CD sourced audio would only require 1411(.2) kbps of data throughput, uncompressed (i.e. WAV). My FLAC library averages c.894 kbps. USB (even 1.1) would be fine - anything else is overkill from a purely music playback perspective.

It rather depended what one was doing and where - it also had much less to do - and there was only one path to Elite and that required combat. This game has three paths to Elite and only one of them requires the player to fire a shot at anything. While this game is a sequel to that game, it contains so much more.

I love a new broom. When I started in my job I made all this great stuff happen. Six years in and I'm part of the problem. But here's a thing. Elite is a game without consequences. You can be a Rear Admiral and a King at the same time. So having cosmetics that are Faction locked is pointless. Nothing looks more Empire than a gold suit at the helm of a Cutter.

Along with the infinite lives and the ability to only lose what had been gained since the last save (that one could revert to at any time)?

Only, as Larson himself was a little annoyed about, polar bears and penguins live on opposite polar masses. Now I'm off topic, so, er, yeah, play nice everyone.

It's the kind of vapor that if you inhale it, take a big lungfull, you can live out an entire fantasy spaceman life in space. I've no idea what they're showing on Friday, if I had to take a guess it'll be the sq42 pre-pre-prelude level that was too embarassing to show last year and if you remember CR clicked past the video when it started playing because "for the love of god Chris please don't show it" so maybe they polished it up in a trial version of sony vegas (true) who knows. Also shame on any media there who accept hospitality from CIG, shame on you.

What they showed last year was officially listed as "Alpha 3.0 demo" They got caught out as it was blindingly obvious it was another standalone tech demo so this year they didn't make that claim. Instead the community did the dirty work this year and you will find SC community videos and threads with "Gamescon 2017 Presentation | Alpha 3.0 Expectations" and similar. It's another standalone r&d tech demo, enjoy it because that's the last time anyone will see it before it goes on the shelf beside the sandworm.

A different approach might be to look at the K/D ratio for a player against NPCs (which should also probably take ship disparity between CMDR / NPC(s) into account) - the higher it gets, the more likely the player is to encounter an NPC with AI, ship and loadout that should offer a more challenging experience. The reason that Combat rank is not a measure of player capability is that, even if the player continues to destroy lower ranked NPCs, their Combat rank will (eventually) reach Elite - like the previous games, Elite rank is a measure of endurance rather than skill.

It will be interesting to see if Frontier share that opinion. Which apparently affects a tiny fraction of a percent of players - who are being contacted individually. It would seem that Frontier don't want to just "cut them off".... Other than total franchise units sold we don't know the demographic split between Horizons players and those who only own the base game - to suggest that Horizons players are in the majority, while plausible, is an assumption.

Regardless of the price of the software, the increased hardware requirements for Horizons may price running it out of reach of some existing players - it is not at all difficult to have sympathy for those players. As to Mac players - they have no option except to play on a PC - another financial hurdle (and not everyone wants / has the skills to run BootCamp on their Mac). In instances with only one player - more than that and it gets "complicated".
  • Robert Maynard's Avatar
    Yesterday, 6:43 PM · 164 replies and 2863 views.
Not all players - those without Horizons (and those who cannot run Horizons) don't have access to any Engineers at all. It's unlikely, in my opinion, that Frontier would choose to alienate these players by making the game too difficult (in general rather than avoidable difficulty) for vanilla ships.

Yet in the previous games the player had "infinite lives" and could choose to restart from any save game that they had stored - not in this game though - endurance is the correct word, as that is all that was really needed to gain Elite ranking (unless one was playing self-imposed iron-man).

A side effect of making NPCs, in general, more challenging in Solo than in the other modes is that, coupled with the ability of players to form Wings for mutual protection in the multi-player modes, that would make Solo the most difficult mode in the game (as the vast majority of the galaxy in Open and Private Groups is exactly the same as Solo, except where opposing players are encountered). Ironic really given that Solo / Private Groups are often referred to as "easy mode"....

Some will say yes, others no. Frontier have all the game analytics though - so they can decide if players, on average, are being destroyed by NPCs often enough (or not)....

Thanks for my 1st rep; from one ex-lecturer to a current one.
May I also take the opportunity to say that I love your CMDR name.
Being of a certain age, I can't help but notice that your avatar does bear a striking resemblance to a fellow academic of yesteryear, one Professor Yaffle? Could you possibly be one and the same?
If so, please pass on my regards to Emily and B.P. if you're still in contact.

    Kind regards,
