In my opinion and based on what you've said, I think you will enjoy it. Elite is quite a slow paced game (especially compared to other modern games), in terms of progress and it has no "end game" as such. It doesn't hold your hand and is quite difficult to master, considering the complexity of involved systems and the scale of the game. However, while it is a playable game, bear in mind it's still quite early in it's life cycle and many things/systems/functionalities are placeholders or incomplete, or just early version and the game as a whole is still in development.
There is also no "campaign" as per modern gaming definition. The storyline is there, but you need to pay attention to Galnet (in-game news agency) and forum threads (here and here - a few first posts in each thread).
If you accept all the above and treat ED like a simulator of life in 34th century and a role-playing game (partially taking place outside of the actual video game - forums, 3rd party tools etc.), with Frontier being the game...
