I suggest the entire thread is reviewd once more on reasons given. In short, those witgh the deepest pockets dominate the franchise, thus removing the RPG-y-ness of it, as one can simply buy ones way up the ranks Munchkin style.

Since we're theorycrafting a bit, let me point out how the cheaper Cobra Mk III is better at exploration than the DBS. Unengineered, a DBS that carries a lightweight build, 3A fuel scoop, 3D shield gen, ADS+DSS will do 27.59 ly on a full tank. (link) For the very same capabilities and equipment (so same costs on outfitting), the Cobra jumps 26.1 ly. (link) The differences between the two? The DBS can carry nothing else, while the Cobra still has two empty internal slots, allowing it to carry an SRV bay, an AFMU, or anything else. Also, the DBS can fit a class 3 fuel scoop only, while the Cobra can do a class 4. In practice, that means the DBS takes 1m30s to refill, while the Cobra does it in 0m46s. You might say that giving all of the above up for +1.49 ly (stock) is worth it, but I think you'll find that most would disagree. Heh, I see. So in short, your answer is yes. Please, no need for hyperbole. I think you'll find nobody here was outraged at anything. If there was actual outrage going on...

@ Edelgard von Rhein: Sure, please do give me the Colonia distances! There are two systems (FD by others) missing those as well, EOL PROU XU-G D10-555 and EOL PROU LM-M D7-1378. @ Speccy: Welcome back! Whether or not (red) giant main stars are rare depends on how you look at it: there aren't many such systems on the ELW list, but there aren't all that many such systems either. Contrast with ELWs around class B stars, where there aren't all that many such Earth-likes, yet plenty of such systems. In any case, few people have found ELWs in "giant" systems, so congrats! @ Klepto: Thanks! Looks like I miss these from time to time. Always nice to see such rare stuff.

It can go up to 40 ly on a full tank, although that's a cardboard build. On a more versatile one, it can reasonably do 36-38 ly. Of course, whether that counts as usable for you is a matter of personal taste (especially with some 50-60 ly ships running around), but before Engineers, that was the high end, pretty much the domain of Anacondas and Asps only.

Sorry, but not quite. A better analogy would be having to take a longer route (to the same destination) with a different car. Given that the Cobra Mk III is cheaper, has a comparable jump range and can carry everything you said is mandatory to an explorer ship while the DBS can't, I still don't really see why it should be included there. While neither the Dolphin, nor the other Saud-Kruger ships are. But anyway, this is mostly a moot point. It's not like costs matter much by now, when with just a few valuable planets (or taking half an hour to participate in a CG and cash in your rewards later) will get you enough credits to buy and outfit plenty of ships for exploration. No offense, but I wouldn't call flying to an already-discovered system via an already-established route a feat of exploration. If you do it via a new route, it's an accomplishment of navigation: otherwise, it's tourism. Nothing wrong with that, but I still don't see why you're repeating the word "novelty". Hm, hold on, I think...

Nice find! This illustrates very well how complex multiple-star systems can be. Sure, many times you only get some stars orbiting a barycenter, and nothing else, but other times, you end up with more interesting stuff. If you find a complex system, I recommend scanning as much stuff as you can, then uploading the data to EGO and constructing an orrery from it. Visualising the whole system can be quite helpful. Also, while Elite doesn't render multiple light sources (yet?), in such systems you can still end up with planets that have rather complex day-night cycles, and you can see those on the orrery.

@ Heavy Johnson: First, wrong car analogy. You're comparing fuel efficiency of a continuous car drive to the maximum range of discrete jumps that a (fictional) spaceship can make. Meanwhile, your argument basically boils down to this: only the top speed of a car matters, and everything else is unimportant. Others will say that there is much more to whether a car is suited to different needs than how fast it can go under optimum circumstances. Besides, there is more than just one kind of exploration, and there is no ship that's the best at everything. (Although the Asp comes very close.) Try using the Anaconda for planetary exploration, you'll see what I mean. As for your judgement on ships: you include the Diamondback Scout(!) as a budget explorer ship, yet as it only has four internal slots, it wouldn't satisfy your own criteria about having enough internal slots. Then again, you said that a full set of exploration modules consists of ADS, DSS, SRV and AFMU, so technically, it can. It just won't have a...

Let's see. Things to consider: - for edge distance records: jump range above all else - for travelling: jump range, supercruise turning, highest fuel scoop class (relative to fuel tank) - for planetary exploration: forward speed (and general agility), visibility from cockpit - subjective, but important for long expeditions: cockpit looks, ship looks - versatility: number of internal slots - defences are not important (yet?), but still worth considering: base shield strength and base armour, as well as forward speed (best defence is to not get hit in the first place) - nice to have in a social aspect: multicrew seats, hangar bay

You obviously fired the thing to early, and seem to have a weak powerdistributor which should have had 4 pips to SYS anyway.

I'm in the same boat, supporting the labour party of my home system (not gonna name it here), I'm also particpating in helping another one spread, and it has become a huge regional power. FDev dropped the ball IMO. The focus needs to be on making interaction with the BGS deeper and more involved, not these cheap gimmicks and hacks.

That depends: better for what? What are you looking for? Although I think you'll find that most people use EDDiscovery more, as it does more things - and as a big added bonus, it's open source. If you want an easy way to upload your finds to EDSM (EDDN) and EGO, you'll likely want to go with EDDiscovery.

Adding the player factions (and stations!) was a bad and short sighted call back in the day. It was a quick and dirty attempt to add some player ownership, and the long term consequences were never properly thought out. I'm not surprised it's gone pear shaped since then. This. So much this.

Name: Separated Twins Game map search ref: Pueloea QJ-X c28-96, ABC 6 and D 6 Description: Two Earth-like worlds can be found in very different orbits in this system: the first one co-orbits three different stars (K, L and M), while the second one orbits a more distant fourth star. Despite this, the two planets are very similar to each other, nearly equal in size. This led the explorer to wonder whether the two planets were formed in the same orbits, but later separated - although the presence of a landable moon around the distant one might mean that this wasn't the case. Screenshot reference: http://i.imgur.com/NXURINh.png and http://i.imgur.com/NmJcDn4.png Also, for the mystery POIs, new Guardian ruins were discovered in Eorl Auwsy SY-Z d13-3468, around another nebula: see here.

That second screenshot looks very good. Nicely done! And yeah, these ELW moons with volcanism might have a minor curse. A couple of days before, I was looking for volcanism on Pearcy's, and pulled off some unscheduled lithobraking too, ending with 60% hull. After that, I found a bugged persistent POI, so with those two I decided to give up and move on. Congrats on finding a ringed neutron!
