I did complain about it at the time as I thought it was 'too easy', but they didn't change it. :) There would have also been an uproar if achievements in gamma were reset for the official launch, thus it stayed. Cheers, Drew.

I watched a video interview with David Braben that was recorded early on in the development of Elite: Dangerous. I seem to remember him saying that he expected that even though Sagittarius A* would be included in the game it would be many years before the first explorer ever reached it. Now we have the newsletter telling the story of a Commander who made it to Colonia in just over three hours.

I just looked up the genesis of the idea behind the Formidine Rift - couldn't remember myself after all this time. It was a post in the private writers forum, dated 01/09/2013 at 9:18 am. Michael Brookes had asked for candidates for background legends and myths in the Elite Dangerous universe, much like Raxxla was in the original game. All the writers had access to it and then the option to include it in their books if they desired. There were others too, such as the Lave stuff and Soontill bits and pieces. Below is a copy of that post. It's what I pitched at the time. It was modified a lot afterwards of course - at that point we didn't even have a starmap. Interesting to note the original location was towards the core. We changed it later because hyperspace transit turned out to be much faster than expected when the game eventually came out (someone got to Sag A* in the gamma). At the time we were led to believe a 1000 lightyears would be a massive trek, but that was quickly dismissed. I didn''t know the...

That is an accusation with zero proof. Simply because what we found was not what was originally out there does not mean that there was nothing to find. Drew has explained that the original POI was a simple derelict Anaconda. It floors me that people still can't conceptualize that as the game improved and content was added that improvements and additional content could not also be added to the Formidine Rift. It is absolutely illogical to assume that just because the Zurara, in the form that it was discovered, could not have existed until 2.3 was released that this means that there wasn't something else out there in it's place. Calling a man a liar without having evidence is bad form.

What doesn't get talked about is the reason WHY people resorted to cheating. 1. Engineers introduced an arms race. 2. Unlocking the desired Engineers, locating the materials and working up to Grade 5 access is laborious and, for many people, not fun. 3. Even after unlocking Grade 5 access the result from an Engineering Mod is entirely random. All your hard work can be flushed thanks to an unlucky roll. 4. The fact that people that you are competing against have better ship builds means that you can't simply ignore the Engineers or settle for less than optimal upgrades. 5. Once the cheat was in the wild, others were using it and Frontier didn't address the problem some people felt "liberated" to use the cheat to maintain their competitive edge. 6. "Everyone is doing it". For the most part I think this effected the highly competitive PvP community more than it did anyone else. I'm mostly an explorer. I've only unlocked Farseer and Martuuk. I've not felt the pressing need to Engineer my ship from...

I've more than one person who got spanked for abusing the engineer cheat explain that their use of the cheat didn't effect anyone else because they play in Solo. Hogwash. Banning yourself to Solo play does not remove your effect on the galaxy. If you abused the cheat and participated in any community goal then your exploited ship allowed you to compete unfairly against your fellow Commanders. Your exploited ship also allowed you to unfairly effect the BGS in systems where others may have been supporting opposing factions. Playing "in solo" does not excuse you. Solo does not equal offline play.

Complete nonsense. I made reference to SDC in a tweet during November I believe. This was actually in reference to the exploration CG that was running at the time between the Federation and the CoR. SDC had informed me that they intended to kill explorers involved. I replied that their behaviour was their business. I did not request or endorse the behaviour, but I I noted it for the book because it was occurring. Perhaps I should not have tweeted about it, but I did. I did join the SDC discord channel prior to the Salomé event, mostly as research to understand a little better how they operated. I couldn't understand most of it as it was a level of english so far below my ability to comprehend. I did offer to talk with them and offered my email address to start a conversation. That offer was never taken up. My intention once again was to understand more of how they operated as I assumed they would take part in the event. That was a my complete and total interaction with SDC over the entire year. My...

Cmdr Khelder developed a really useful surface navigation app (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/241252-Sneak-Peek-Surface-Navigation?highlight=Sneak+peek) which looked to be the bees knees, but FD wouldn't give him a licence as it got the current location by memory scraping. For keeping an on- or near-surface track history that could be overkill, since when searching your speed is relatively low; I was hoping the journal file might be used to get srv/ship location say once every thirty seconds to lay down a track history, and the ship height could be used to vary the track width to represent detection probability depending on the size/visibility of the object being searched, however the journal file doesn't seem to do that. I really think whoever sets these planetary surface puzzles has never actually tried to find one. I'm still amazed that barnacles were ever found cos I have difficuly seeing them even when I have their coordinates & hovering nearby!

Very happy with Frontier's actions. The only thing that I'd have liked on top of this would have been for anyone who had been the victim in PvP to one of these "cheat ships" to have been notified of the fact and reimbursed for their losses.

Depends what you mean by worst ;) I UA bombed Jacques before it's misjump, shipped about 200-odd there. I still think it was a good idea, just look at Colonia today. But at the time there was a lot of anger at UA bombers in general and a lot of people shooting from the hip about that sort of thing just being the actions of 13-yo griefers bored with life and hating everyone around them.

you know what? Up until about 2 months ago, I would have been totally onboard with combat log punishment. Now, though... And here's why. At my new residence, there is no ethernet cable to my room, and wifi is not good enough to reach my room, despite having upgraded the system with Mikrotik and Ruckus. Let's just say, when it comes to houses, they don't build 'em like they used to! So, I'm relying on an Ethernet over Power connection, and the reliability is maddening. It has a habit of disconnecting me just prior to taking down an Elite Cutter, after spending a good 15 minutes taking down the shields in my Vulture. Or just as I complete a mission. Or just as I am about to explode. I have had more than 10 disconnects in the last 2 days, and it always seems to happen at some critical point, like the time that the game checks with the transaction server is exactly the moment when something is about to go boom (either something else, or you). I'm not a logger, but I bet it would sure look like it...

I always wished black outs/red-outs played a proper role in this game. It would make for a far more interesting combat arena. I actually jumped into a Mig 15 in DCS a few days ago after a very long break (trying to finish off Elite Combat). I blacked out and crashed into the ground in about 20 seconds (first turn!!!), having been a little too accustomed to ED manoeuvring... Z...

31.7 in my first Asp X. And a 5A fuel scoop - before boosts and the like, and took it to (almost) Beagle point. I ended up being 0.3Ly (or similar) short of being able to get to BP with my max jump range. I'll never go below 6A again for fuel scoops (ship constraints permitting). Would love a fast flow rate mod! Z...

I've never been afraid of it. Truth be told, if you did some research and knew what you were doing, you'd likely never suffer a single interdiction at the hands of another CMDR. Having said that, I won't judge anyone, regardless of what mode they play. It's their money, their time, and FD have given us all the option to pick modes. Z...

    Hey man,

Just want to say thanks for taking up the mantle with the new Rift mystery thread. That has to be a ton of work organizing and posting everything onto the front page, and must be a PITA trying to keep tabs on the thread and keep it updated. I don't envy you! I know most of us Rifters have said thanks on the forum already, but I just wanted to reach out

    Thanks again!
