Opinions vary on that, given that it would affect all players* in Open.... :) *: that might want to visit player populated areas.

Whether it is correct (or not) rather depends on one's opinion regarding direct PvP and the ability to completely avoid it in this game. Equal in the sense that, if there are 100,000 players in Open then that equates to an average of 1 player per 4,000,000 systems - and, at the very least, 399,999,900,000 of those systems would be empty. The point being that the risk is only increased when there is more than one player in an instance and there is the likelihood of hostility between those present. The fact that Frontier has stuck to their chosen design for the game throughout development and past release is the reason that there are an ever increasing number of these threads - started by players whose preferred play-style may be affected by the freedoms afforded to all players.

Exactly. I drove in a straight line from the gate for 79 kilometers and found a metallic meteorite. Coincidence? I think not!

Steve Bannon is a patriot. I keep a picture of him around just for inspiration:

Another example of leftist violence can be seen in the case of former UC Berkeley professor Ted Kaczynski, AKA "The Unabomber". He espoused a philosophy of anti-industrialism and the return to a more basic eco-friendly anarchic lifestyle. His bombs killed 3 and injured 23.

Very sorry for your experience. Did you purchase from Steam or the Frontier Store? Can you login to the Frontier Store? If you purchased from Steam please refer to the official Steam instructions; under Elite Dangerous select 'Account' followed by 'Account support' and finally click on 'How to apply'. Frontier are currently experiencing email issues. If you continue to have issues please post in the following thread and file a support ticket using your Frontier Store login credentials.

Tree spiking comes to mind as a particularly violent tactic that has been used by certain left-wing environmentalist extremists. Though I think they disavowed the tactic after the first human casualty. There were some violent protests following the recent Presidential election in the United States though, to be honest, most of that violence was directed at inanimate objects (breaking windows for example) and not toward harming people.

True, I remember many people raising it as a concern even as the 2.3 format and details were announced.

Little things could go a long way. Imagine taking a mission to assassinate an Elite combateer named "Harry Blowhard". The mission goes according to plan and you get paid. The next day you get attacked by a wing of three competent NPCs and are shocked when you see their names: Amy Blowhard, George Blowhard and Tyrone Blowhard. Then the accompanying text: "You killed our father. There's no way you're getting away with this." It would be kind of fun if the game occasionally threw things at us to make us feel like our actions have long-running consequences.

A lot of people are avoiding multicrew with strangers because it currently gives those strangers the power to get you a wanted flag real quick. A few black hats have take to joining multicrew sessions and deliberately attacking starports and system authorities as a new form of griefing. I believe that Frontier is working on a patch that will allow the helmsman to prevent multicrew participants from deploying hard points, etc. to allow the pilot some control over this kind of behavior.

So after about 4 months away from the game due to boring myself senseless with the imperial rank grind (self inflicted I know) I thought I'd come back refreshed and give the 2.3 Commanders a go. Anyway I find it almost impossible to find available ships to join, I've managed it a couple of times but it's rare. Is this lack of availability normal? If so I'm guessing people are generally not interested similar to Arena? Btw it was on Xbox.

How about just condemning violent people? It's not the idea themselves that are generally at fault for the violence. Any idea, in the hands of a particularly unstable individual, can be used to kindle the fires of violence. I'm not particularly fond of the "thought police" and the criminalization of ideas. If your ideas lead you to violent acts or to incite others to violence then, yeah, you've got a problem.

lol. Yeah, I usually fit the largest fuel scoop I can affix to my ship. I've timed my average hyperspace jump, scooping and all, to about one-and-a-half minutes. The amount of time that I'm required to actually pilot my ship during that time period is about 20 seconds. That gives me 70 seconds of snooze time. I'm ex-military. I can sleep standing up or even when marching. I'm on my what must be about my 7th trip to Colonia right now and believe me it's just as engaging as it sounds. Totally my choice of course but I really want my FAS out there and I'm not willing to pay the transfer cost. Given my current jump range it take about an hour to travel 1,000 light-years. That's a 22 hour trip. If I can sleep most of the way there then that's just a bonus ... especially since I work nights and weekends. Sleep is at a premium. I get it wherever and whenever I can. I never actually said anything about autopilot in my post. I simply pointed out that much of my playing Elite involved me NOT actually...

Why would they? The added risk due to other players only affects a vanishingly small proportion of the galaxy - therefore a blanket bonus for one mode would almost always be incorrectly applied. .... and Frontier are on record, several times now, stating that the game modes are equal and valid (and that they know that not all players agree).

I already spend a lot of my time in Elite: Dangerous NOT playing the game. I do mostly exploration in Elite. When I'm jumping between systems I've actually been known to fall asleep immediately after executing the FSD jump, sleep through the entire fuel scooping exercise (I don't know how but I've managed to figure out how to avoid splashing into the star 99% of the time with my eyes closed) and waking up just long enough to quickly check the system map for interesting targets before executing the next jump. When I do find an interesting target worthy of scanning (Water World, Ammonia or Earth-like) It's often many light-seconds away. I point my ship at it and then proceed to find something else to do while I close the distance. When I'm not sleep-exploring I tend to find a movie or binge-watch a series on Netflix. Elite: Dangerous has allowed me to rewatch every single television episode of every Star Trek series, Battlestar Galactica (original and reboot), Babylon 5, and much, much more.

Well ... I'm certainly in Open and I'm not actively avoiding other players on purpose but the space out here between Colonia and Jaques does feel somewhat ... uninhabited.

There may be an argument put forward by some players that the game should be changed to accommodate their desired play-style, however, Frontier were clear from the outset that all players would affect a single shared galaxy state, regardless of game mode (and now platform). Every player either backed or bought the game with the single shared galaxy state as either part of the design yet to be developed or as part of the released game. Frontier have implemented their published design in that regard - offering all players the ability to affect the BGS / Community Goals / Powerplay with no requirement to engage in PvP to do so. There remains the possibility, from what Frontier published, for multiple Open groups (modes) with different rules to accommodate different play-styles, however Frontier seem reluctant to introduce them apparently preferring that all players seeking an Open game mode should play in a single Open mode (on their platform, that is).
