I suggest the entire thread is reviewd once more on reasons given. In short, those witgh the deepest pockets dominate the franchise, thus removing the RPG-y-ness of it, as one can simply buy ones way up the ranks Munchkin style.

How handy are you? You need to pick the right chair, for a start, and DIY will likely be the way to go, I'll take a snap of my own chair when I get home tonight and post it. It's a bit rough, but was more of a proof of concept before building with better materials. The T16000 fcs is not really designed for mounting, so you may need to use longer screws for the base and under-mount it. Z..

Since we're theorycrafting a bit, let me point out how the cheaper Cobra Mk III is better at exploration than the DBS. Unengineered, a DBS that carries a lightweight build, 3A fuel scoop, 3D shield gen, ADS+DSS will do 27.59 ly on a full tank. (link) For the very same capabilities and equipment (so same costs on outfitting), the Cobra jumps 26.1 ly. (link) The differences between the two? The DBS can carry nothing else, while the Cobra still has two empty internal slots, allowing it to carry an SRV bay, an AFMU, or anything else. Also, the DBS can fit a class 3 fuel scoop only, while the Cobra can do a class 4. In practice, that means the DBS takes 1m30s to refill, while the Cobra does it in 0m46s. You might say that giving all of the above up for +1.49 ly (stock) is worth it, but I think you'll find that most would disagree. Heh, I see. So in short, your answer is yes. Please, no need for hyperbole. I think you'll find nobody here was outraged at anything. If there was actual outrage going on...

Hm, aren't they supposed to eject in an escape pod after a long while?

@ Edelgard von Rhein: Sure, please do give me the Colonia distances! There are two systems (FD by others) missing those as well, EOL PROU XU-G D10-555 and EOL PROU LM-M D7-1378. @ Speccy: Welcome back! Whether or not (red) giant main stars are rare depends on how you look at it: there aren't many such systems on the ELW list, but there aren't all that many such systems either. Contrast with ELWs around class B stars, where there aren't all that many such Earth-likes, yet plenty of such systems. In any case, few people have found ELWs in "giant" systems, so congrats! @ Klepto: Thanks! Looks like I miss these from time to time. Always nice to see such rare stuff.

It can go up to 40 ly on a full tank, although that's a cardboard build. On a more versatile one, it can reasonably do 36-38 ly. Of course, whether that counts as usable for you is a matter of personal taste (especially with some 50-60 ly ships running around), but before Engineers, that was the high end, pretty much the domain of Anacondas and Asps only.

Sorry, but not quite. A better analogy would be having to take a longer route (to the same destination) with a different car. Given that the Cobra Mk III is cheaper, has a comparable jump range and can carry everything you said is mandatory to an explorer ship while the DBS can't, I still don't really see why it should be included there. While neither the Dolphin, nor the other Saud-Kruger ships are. But anyway, this is mostly a moot point. It's not like costs matter much by now, when with just a few valuable planets (or taking half an hour to participate in a CG and cash in your rewards later) will get you enough credits to buy and outfit plenty of ships for exploration. No offense, but I wouldn't call flying to an already-discovered system via an already-established route a feat of exploration. If you do it via a new route, it's an accomplishment of navigation: otherwise, it's tourism. Nothing wrong with that, but I still don't see why you're repeating the word "novelty". Hm, hold on, I think...

My first expedition was in January 3301 in a T6 with 22ly range. I headed from Dulos towards Dumbbell Nebula, Veil Nebula, then sort of meandered along spinward on the coreward side of Sadr Region. I ended up at WR 136, KY Cygni, Crescent Nebula, NGC 6871, and finally NGC 6820. I was just shy of 7 kylies from Sol when I turned back around. I guided my way back along the B class stars, black holes and neutron stars in what is now called the Cygnus Corridor until I arrived back at the bubble in Dohkwithi. Total distance travelled almost 20 kylies, 947 jumps, 11MCr and Pioneer exploration rank. It took just over 5 weeks. Unfortunately a number of systems got rejigged at some point in the past. One of the most interesting systems I came across was HD 193576. It had a ringed M class star in orbit around a black hole.

Nice find! This illustrates very well how complex multiple-star systems can be. Sure, many times you only get some stars orbiting a barycenter, and nothing else, but other times, you end up with more interesting stuff. If you find a complex system, I recommend scanning as much stuff as you can, then uploading the data to EGO and constructing an orrery from it. Visualising the whole system can be quite helpful. Also, while Elite doesn't render multiple light sources (yet?), in such systems you can still end up with planets that have rather complex day-night cycles, and you can see those on the orrery.

@ Heavy Johnson: First, wrong car analogy. You're comparing fuel efficiency of a continuous car drive to the maximum range of discrete jumps that a (fictional) spaceship can make. Meanwhile, your argument basically boils down to this: only the top speed of a car matters, and everything else is unimportant. Others will say that there is much more to whether a car is suited to different needs than how fast it can go under optimum circumstances. Besides, there is more than just one kind of exploration, and there is no ship that's the best at everything. (Although the Asp comes very close.) Try using the Anaconda for planetary exploration, you'll see what I mean. As for your judgement on ships: you include the Diamondback Scout(!) as a budget explorer ship, yet as it only has four internal slots, it wouldn't satisfy your own criteria about having enough internal slots. Then again, you said that a full set of exploration modules consists of ADS, DSS, SRV and AFMU, so technically, it can. It just won't have a...

Imperial Clipper. Depending on build and loadout you can make it whatever role you want. G5 Increased Range FSD gives you over 40ly jump range in exploration build. The large number of module slots gives you the option to use it for moderate trading or mining. You can give it a combat build with hull and shield tanking. The only downside is needing gimballed weapons for the wide separation of the nacelles. With G5 Dirty Drives, it frolicks like a filly and can top 560 on the boost with a light build. It truly is my favourite ship and I've got 3 of them in different builds for different purposes. Oh, I forgot to mention it looks gorgeous....

Interesting... I have always suspected it works something like this, but never put int he time to try and figure it out. I've always noticed that certain types of systems come in "batches" a lot of the time. there is an area in Ceeckia that I call the Ceeckia Ammonia Zone. On my first trip to that area, I found a region that just non stop spot Ammonia worlds out at me.. I noticed this with ELW's and WW/HMC TFC's also. Whilst selling my data after my first big trip, I noticed specific regions that constantly paid out large chunks of cash for all the systems in them. I'm glad someone has figured it out, I'll be paying more attention to this from now on... Z...
