+ 1. A worthy endeavor if ever there was! Here's a link to a list of them. It shoudl has just about all of teh current ones on there. https://eddb.io/station 66,000+ Say 5 a day every day and you shoudl be finished in about 36 years. I think they might be add some more ...or maybe we'll lose some to Fly safe!

I get what OP wants. There is no reason to have to make an interesting risk vs time decision about how to get somewhere. The jump range of most ships above the starter level is too great for the density of stars in the Bubble. Even my combat ViperMk4 has a jump range of 27 LY. To get anywhere I can go in a straight line and the intervening systems are all the same from a routing point of view - there is no appreciable difference in danger, and there are no large regions of unscoopable stars that would force someone to go the long way round, or have to decide to trade cargo space for exta fuel tanks. When operating far above or below the galactic disk, or in certain non-kgbfoam regions near the core, navigation becomes more challenging - but of course exploration or tourism missions are the only gameplay visible out there. So how could the topography of the game be reshaped? Change star types and locations. This is a radical continuity break, requiring dumping much of the game's lore. Encourage...

Well, if nothing else, that is some progress at least. There might be a glimmer of hope for HOTAS in this lulzbucketry after all.

Does anyone know if the HOTAS setups they have are actually being used during this "demo", or is everyone on KB&M / Xbox controller?

Can someone please explain the trading card thing in detail? I can't watch anything till I get home - but that particular gem made me splutter coffee all over my surface pro :D I predicted such nonsense years ago :D

And there's no need for challenge to equal pew pew, either. Suppose there were stealth surface scan missions, where you had to remain out of the lines of sight of skimmers? Or ones where the data points were further apart, requiring crazy fast point to point driving skills. Or ones where you have to scan Key Code/Secret Passphrase from Location A, in order to sneak into Location B (Hmm, I smell a new mission chain type...).

OT (mostly) If anyone really can't wait, may I present Space Legs Sally. Explore your newly acquired Asp in 18 rooms of platform fun! Clean up the junk the previous owner left lying around so that your crewmember Zemina will let you into the cockpit! System requirements: Spectrum 128 or emulation thereof.

This 'start menu option' needn't be a GUI element. It should be in game, dictated by the geography of the galaxy, and the difficulty level should be set by the player's choice in where they fly to. I and many others, in this thread and in other threads going back at least 3 years, have argued for more distinct 'political geography' in the game that dictates a wide range of challenges. In all that time, the only response from FD on this request has been the 'security level/wanted level' popup on activating hyperdrive. Any chance of them taking a position on this this time around? Amen. Most of the time, because I went into the scary system. Sometimes I want it to come out of its hiding hole and surprise me, too.

Thanks for that link! The concepts listed in that 2013 stuff (zones, emitters, generators, banks, cells) share some names with what we ended up with, but wow, that's about all that is the same. In Olden Times parlance, a "shield cell" was a basic component of the shield system itself. The system involved having a generator replenish cells holding the power, that would then allow shields to be projected across zones via emitters on the hull. Each of these were actual things you could outfit, reconfigure and manage. So shields themselves weren't simply "drop in and go" single components, and a shield cell was never envisaged as a top-up battery.

To summarize, this thread seems to be unravelling into two skeins: 1) A request for a variety of surface scan settlement challenges, ranging from unopposed, to heavily defended sites that will challenge a wing of Commanders. 2) Making mission payouts appropriate to the challenge, so that their rewards are significant to the Commander completing the mission, whether a new player with a few hours in the game, or someone who's been playing on the same save since Gamma in 2014. -- 1) might require clearer signalling of the hazard related to the 'level' of the mission than commander rank and the '+++' rating of the location. It's unclear whether an 'Elite' mission implies that it requires an end-game engineered ship, or can it be achieved with a silent running small craft? 2) appears to be a derivative of 1). I wonder what the fundamental economics used by FD's designers to determine mission payouts are? Are they deriving them from the strength of opposition, or the distance of the mission...

Oh and this is what I came here for. Is there going to be any system in place to ensure variety in chains and wrinkles? In other words, to prevent multiple missions of the same type from 'wrinkling' in the same way? It looks samey when two missions are both complicated by opposition that manifests as two instances of the same ship type and rank.

Welcome Commander! Grateful to have you onboard and thank you for contributing to Elite. Hopefully the following links will prove useful; link, link, link. If in doubt please post in the following thread and file a support ticket using your store login credentials. Fly safe, drive efficiently and good luck with your cosmic goings-on. The Galactic AcademyMentors will set you up for initial play-through and beyond. The following thread will help you find platform specific game-play and some. The single best recommendation is to seriously take your time and experiment before you commit or switch between game-mode and play style. Don’t be afraid of a do-over or two and if needs be ‘clear your save’ can be found in-game under options menu. Have fun acclimating, play-testing and configuring your control schemes to benefit you specifically long-term while you carry on with all-out galactic diplomacy. And in my opinion - there's nothing wrong with that if the purchaser wishes to spend $400. Logically though, buying a $400 ship to play with in a game that hasn't progressed past pre-alpha, that has no game loop in which to perform it's intended function, where there are no game mechanics in which that intended function could even be possible, that where you continually t-pose through the mesh of said ship, and where there is absolutely no clear evidence that the situation will improve any time soon, we simply have to look at the facts of the matter. My lulzbucket exploded. I rest my case.

Well, the real beauty of opinions is that they are opinions, and are all just as valid as each other. Actual logic is a vicious beast though, which is why it needs gates :D

I use the trims for firegroups and sensor zoom, the slider for cargo scoop, and the left under-button for next destination select - it's handy as it's just a full thumb-down to hit.

You can certainly use the wheels as any inputs you want - but for me at least, it's awkward as anything. Someone somewhere out there though is undoubtedly laughing at me as a wheel-noob though.

You'd do a far, far better job than what CIG have previously demonstrated :D I'll volunteer to move your racks around so that they reach the fibre. No need for site surveys, safety loops or anything - let's just put a 300 degree bend in those optical babies and yes! 3 quid 6-plugs from Tesco are perfectly acceptable.

That's.... really quite disturbing. CIG apparently have the best marketing department ever, why would it need any help from anyone else, especially somewhere that the more "enthusiastic" backers have decried as urm, someplace irrelevant to everything.

It's a bit of a motley crew though - I can see a X52, X52 Pro, X56 - you would have thought they would have a default configuration and a stock setup so each build wouldn't need customised driver installs for each model, and each machine painstakingly paired to it's peripherals somewhere as chaotic as a live techshow, not to mention the hassle of getting used to the different bindings available. The simple solution to that of course, is to KB&M the hell out of everything and just have the wagglesticks as stage dressing :D Oh you are far too kind Sir!

It was a joke Captain as I stated later on... none-subtle satire is clearly not welcome here. I'll try something more obvious in future, possibly to the tune of yakety-sax.
  6. I saw the subsequent post correcting any mistaken impressions there. Will give that a +1 when forum-machine allows me to.
