Thread: Buckyball Racing Club

  1. #61
I've just finished watching those two David Braben Europa landing videos. Holy crap! The possibilities for new Horizons based Buckyball runs in the new year a staggering!

Hey all, I'm back from a week-and-a-half of driving and letting my 2-year old bond with her grandparents and other family.

Also once Horizons is out, there's a chance that you'll be able to find recognisable Orca wreckage planet-side to incorporate into an image.
I'm pretty much over the Gilligan's Island thing. As noted, a 3-hour event is very long and I want to give people options for something shorter, so it'd be an awkward theme. But I'd definitely be happy to accept help with fixing images.

This year's spring equinox (for Earth) is the weekend of March 19-20, depending on where you live. If I could get a block that includes those dates, I'd be happy. The second half of March sounds awesome to me.

Later in the year, I'm expecting that the Kessel Run and the Bootlegger Challenge will both make a return.
I'm hoping to run 3 other events throughout the year, one per season. Each is scored differently to provide a different experience, but still require the "racers" to route among Tourism stations for a specified period of time. The full cycle would be:

    • Spring Break -- Late March (19th-20th)
      • Scored by the number of stations toured.

    • Summer Vacation -- Late June (20th-21st)
      • Scored by the volume of space toured (approximately).

    • Autumn Sightseeing -- Late September (22nd)
      • Scored by the distance traveled and the number of systems toured.

    • Winter Retreat -- Late December (21st)
      • Scored by the supercruise distances to stations.

I have a Terry Pratchett themed, full length race starting to take shape in my mind. I am open to when it is run, although end of April would be good as his birth date is 28 April.

Also, I'll post up some rules for The Mischief Mile later today for review and feedback before starting the formal thread later in the week.

Yes, I'm planning to revamp the Bootlegger Challenge and to run it in August again. I'm completely flexible about that, so it could run earlier or later in the year if there's a lack of races or if someone needs the August slot for their theme. I could shift to any time of the year after Easter I'd say. I wouldn't want to run it earlier than that, as I want to see properly how the new surface ports affect the illegal rares trade.

The GalRally I'll be finalising the details for during December. I'll probably need to work the schedule around the timing of Erimus' Distant Worlds expedition, as there's obviously a lot of crossover of interested players between the two events. Most players who've already expressed a serious interest in the GalRally are already signed up for the DW Expedition.

Since I've got the whole of 3302 to run the Rally in, and I've been trying to keep it as flexible as possible, I'll scout out the routes, see what Horizons brings and keep an eye on Erimus' plans before committing to actual dates.

I'd really like to set up a "warm-up"-race, e.g. a shorter one in february (because i'm very busy jobwise till the end of january.

if we get a new mechanic for jumping to secondary stars, i'll set up a "great tea race" - history returning https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Tea_Race_of_1866 - with rare good teas. without that mechanic one would spend to much time in sc right now (around 1,5 h+ in total). such a race would include a special clipper category (because see link).

if we don't get a new mechanic, i'd like to set up an "daedalus"-race. starting point being close to sol, going to the highest point above sol (I'll look for a system which you can reach with all type of ships....), and than going to the deepest point below sol. that would add up to around 3000+ ly, though. a shorter version would include only a race to the highest point, or to the highest point and back. i like the idea of explorer builds crossing the bubble, and wonder whether can ask for racers to have gold in their hold...

Unsurprising conclusion from the first hour or so in the beta:
Lots of practice is going to be required for fast approaches to surface bases.

Even more practice (and picking the right control set-up!) is going to be required for SRV operation - though SRVs don't appear to have a clock so probably won't be in BRC races for the moment .

OK, here are the basic rules for The Mischief Mile...I'll pretty them up for the actual thread.

Ship build: No Fuel Scoop. No extra Fuel Tanks.

The route is reversible, to allow for back-to-back runs, and is otherwise up to the racer where they go and how they get fuel.

Start: Tepech (Hooke Hub) or Mirateje (Ocampo Station)
    Route: Depending on start...

Start: Tepech (Hooke Hub) - photo on pad
    then, in any order
    - Fuelum (Wollheim Vision) - photo on pad
    - NLTT 48288 - photo in map
    - MCC 811 - photo in map
End: Mirateje (Ocampo Station) - photo on pad

Or do the reverse - start at Mirateje and end in Tepech

    6 photos, including outfitting.

To clarify Fuel Tank size: you can run extra tanks, but the total fuel capacity can not exceed the manufacturer's standard. For example, you can run any build with a maximum of 32T of fuel on an Asp Explorer.

Wings: Allowed but not to use wingman navlock to arrive at a station. Player honesty required.

You can run in open, private or solo, noted in the table with 2 main leaderboards:

    "Fuel Rat Regulars":
    Adder
    Anaconda
    Asp Explorer
    Cobra Mk III
    Diamondback Explorer
    Diamondback Scout
    Hauler
    Imperial Courier
    Python
    Type-6
    Type-7
    Type-9

"Fuel Rat Crazies (for those that need more stations to dent)":
    Eagle
    Federal Assault Ship
    Federal Dropship
    Federal Gunship
    Fer-de-lance
    Imperial Clipper
    Imperial Eagle
    Orca
    Sidewinder
    Viper
    Vulture

Bonus snickers: Only eligible on runs from Tepech to Mirateje, collecting a pre-determined amount of Limpets in Fuelum to deliver to Mirateje (maybe a third table?)

So, any thoughts on the raw rules?

    Definitely a 3rd table.

I'm probably not interested enough to do it, but someone should run a "Cannon (Vision) Ice-Ball Run". In the Aling system, Cannon Vision outpost is in the furthest orbit of Aling A5, which has 6 icy moons, all of which are landfall planets. I'd imagine that you'd have to leave the station, park on each moon, take a screenshots of the planetary maps to show your location and time, then return to the station.

    mischief mile sounds good Aurora,
what are peoples thoughts on jump synthesis being used in races?

My initial view (which might change!) would be:
For races which don't include planetary approaches, jump synthesis should be banned - as we want to encourage participation of those who don't have Horizons.
For other races, it's probably at the organiser's discretion, though personally I would probably ban it from my races in order to not penalise those who don't have the time to go and hunt down the materials required.

It doesn't help that it's not that easy to prove through screenshots whether or not you were making use of this during a race.

Can you not use screen shot before and after of resources? Or is there no clock visible?

The problem is the lack of clock visible (without playing around with field of view).

So as with season 1 beta, I suspect that we're not seeing the full picture yet. Right now we're testing raw mechanics, basic balance, etc., and can't yet know how easy it is to acquire the necessary materials. If what we are seeing now reflects what will go live, it'll be too exclusive to allow in races. I've got 315KM of SRV travel under my belt on a variety of planets. I've collected 130 mats, but have not found Germanium, which is required for both Basic and Standard FSDI recipes, have not found Cadmium, which is required for Standard FSDI recipes, and have not found Yttrium or Polonium, which is required for Premium FSDI recipes.

Now that being said, one clue that things are not yet what we can expect them to be, is that I have almost no Phosphorus, which is supposedly a very common element that's required for both SRV Ammo Restock and Refuel. But it's also possible that I just need to get out of the craters.

edit: found an iceball that's handing out the phosphorus, so that's good
