Thread: Forum Signature

    Forum Signature

I tried to update my signature to add a new ship, and it seems not to like the name of a prior ship, saying the word is banned on the forum, so I'm unable to resave an updated signature. The erroneous word seems to be "oo", and is a fairly common bird. Not sure why it's offensive. Presume Great , Boobys, and Woodpeckers all still welcome?

Hey Johnny, I'm not totally sure what you're having trouble with? As far as I'm aware the word tit is not actually censored in the forum, we can see that you do have a signature that is fairly lengthy.

If you're still having trouble I suggest that you contact the moderation team which you can do via the 'Quick-Links section at the top of the forum page.

I've checked our wordfilter, and the word you've described isn't on the filter list. Try again?

I've remove the hyphen from oo in the signature (second last row, depending on screen width) and got this warning, whereupon it offered me just "oo".

"The following errors occurred with your submission

You have used a censored word. Please remove this word."

I assume the problem is with the "" part of oo.

Why do you try posting oo and see?

I'm surprised CMDR Unha could post tit, as when I tried with Great Tit (yes, I was having a wee bit of fun) it got blanked out in the posting step.

Ok, Great Tit, and tit are now ok (maybe I mistyped it originally) but you'll see the handling of cu-ckoo above (hyphen added this time so you can read it). Like in my signature for "The oo Crumbles" ship name. In both cases it truncates to just "oo". Seems to remove "Cu-ck" (hyphen added here).

You name all of your ships? That is really cool.

I am working on a little game, and I was thinking of automatically generating random names. But it would need a lot of different inputs to minimize repeats.

It's a Banks/Culture thing. I think a few other CMDRs might be similarly inspired. I'm not sure where Banks got his inspiration from, mostly it seems to be phrases or real world objects repurposed (e.g. Seed Drill). My favourite was/is Inspiral, Coalescence, Ringdown from the novel Matter. Others I liked are Little Rascal and Frank Exchange of Views, the latter for a Rapid Offensive Unit, i.e. an attack ship. Some names were descriptive, and others ironic. In the books each ship's Mind (i.e. the sentient ship itself) often chooses the name for itself.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...Culture_series. This also explains the prefixes I've roughly attempted to map on to Elite ships. After Banks passed away Elon Musk named two of his rockets for Culture ships; a nice touch.

Not everyone runs a fleet and that possibly explains why after nearly 30 months of play I've not got any ship larger than a Lakon T7 or a recent addition Federal Dropship. Next on the shopping list is probably a Federal Assault Ship. I'm fairly sure I could sell the lot and by an Anaconda (I hear they are cool) but there's no rush to get one, and still plenty to do in the meantime.

Personal anecdote but Fer-de-Lance appear a lot more desirable than Anaconda which seem sluggish and maneuverable.

I love finding pirate Anacondas because I know I can hover their blind spots and eventually collect a fat bounty.

Hi Brett, I wondered if you'd figured out the problem yet with the word 'cu..ckoo' (dots added so it can be seen)?

Look up the word (without the oo) - its an american insult/swear word

Yes, I'm aware of that, but the FD filters should be set to "white list" cu.ckoo, which is simply a proper bird name and block only the shorter swearing version. It's funny, FD blocks it on the forum, but not in the game. As noted earlier, FD has no problem with other birds including Blue Tit, Boobys and Woodpeckers.

The ship is named for a phrase I recall my Finnish grandmother using, where English was not her first language. She would say, "That's the way the cu.ckoo crumbles".
