Thread: Mission Board Stress Testing - 2.4 beta

  1. #46
the whole issue with "mission stacking" comes from the fact that a single mission doesn't pay well enough, nor do single missions fill a T9 cargo space going to one destination.

board flipping started to go out of control as soon as someone noticed that you could do it to get more of the missions to either the same location or to do the same goal.
combine that with stations in remote locations, where the mission generator can only generate missions going to one locations, and you get an exploit spot.

and just because you could stack up to 20 missions fullfilling killing the same target (massacre), the DEVs had to lower the reward for each.
and just because you can refresh the mission board forcefully, the payouts for missions had to be reduced...

but for what reason they had implemented python-only transport missions, and nothing for a dedicated hauler like the T9... idk

A really nice change, thks Frontier for that fix.

Am I wrong in the assumption that the new search & rescue feature is just to hand in things I have found, like escape pods etc.

I haven't seen any search & rescue missions on the boards yet.

    Anyone else had them ?
Not seen any rescue missions yet. Hope FD will bring them in addition to the rescue board they put in motion.

I noticed that stacked surface salvage missions to the same system still send you to one location for all the missions. Bit disappointing that this hasn't been changed yet to different locations for each.

As part of 2.4 we’ve improved missions in a few ways, including upping the variety and selection of missions on the mission board. You can see the full changelog here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showth...ow-(changelog) (look under Missions to see all the changes that have been made)

During the beta we will be stress testing the mission board system, specifically looking at how many missions we can populate the missions board with. We’ll be looking to find the optimal number of missions for both gameplay and performance.

As a result of this you will find you’re able to accept a significantly larger number of missions are offered to you than usual. This is all part of stress testing the system, and will most likely not be indicative of what will be available on the mission board at launch.

Previously the mission board was sent from the mission server as one single message, meaning that some mission boards simply wouldn’t be populated if the message wasn’t fully received by the client within a period of time. In 2.4 each mission is sent to the board individually, meaning it is able to populate one by one even if the complete list cannot be downloaded. If the list is fully received as intended then it will be displayed on the board immediately. If this is not the case, and it takes longer than 30 seconds, it will let you know a partial list has been received and you’ll see that displayed on the mission board. This is the reason we want to stress test and find the optimal number. The testing will help reduce the number of Commanders with partially completed mission boards, the ultimate aim is to have larger mission boards with a higher variety of missions available for 2.4.
Please tell me you're not going to revert to the smaller number of missions on launch? the higher number of missions is one of the few bits of this beta I'd actually bloody use! limit the number of the same type of missions, perhaps, to ensure variety, but for the love of flight don't lower the number of missions generated to what they are in live!

This looks good to me, and should avoid those hangs / no missions available issues that occasionally crop up.

However, a major gripe on my part is that the mission display starts at the available / unavailable mission boundary. So for every participant, I have to scroll up to the top, then scroll through the list, rather than starting at the top and just scrolling down through it once.

It's nice to have a lot of missions, however:
    • Without increasing the number of candidate destination systems, the mission board contains a lot of repetition. Missions effectively become commodities. You might as well have a button 'Give me all the data missions to Solati'.
    • More missions place stress on UI. Eg When I have garnered 10 data delivery missions to the same location, and 25 in total (for example) and I get an inbox message saying "Manager Wells: time bonus" with no reference to which mission, the inbox message is next to useless. I have to use the transaction tab to identify the changed mission.
    • UI stress 2: it becomes tedious to manually iterate every faction to get to the missions to a your destination. "Other missions to Solati" would be nice to have.
    • More missions place stress on gameplay. Same example as above. The player is tempted to fill up with apparently easy duplicate missions to the same location. Suddenly there are 3 different Deadly Anacondas jockeying to interdict him. This duplication of threats could overwhelm a new player (irrespective of threat type) and exposes lack of variety in the mission wrinkles to an experienced player - why are the threats all identical? Would some kind of 'jeopardy meter' help to show how 'hot' the data courier has become? Why are mission givers still giving them more data?
    • It's now quicker to obtain reward commodities, eg Modular Terminals.

This seems to have improved mission generation around Colonia a lot - plenty of missions as usual in the central systems, but the isolated systems around the edges now seem to have at least a few mining / donation missions, and the occasional long-range cargo transfer or assassination mission as well. Much better.

Total mission count in the isolated systems is still pretty low - 3 or 4 per faction compared with the 20ish generated elsewhere: hopefully when the mission counts are turned back down for launch, that will still mean 3 or 4 for the isolated systems, not back to 0 again.

I havent checked yet but does this change to mission volume mean that people wuill be able to fast rank in a fraction of teh time to get cutters, corvettes and permits?

Just a quick one - not sure if this is a bug that I need to report or if it is just the way it intended. I accepted several missions all for De Kamp Orbital in the Delkar system, but once I arrived I had to complete each mission then leave the station and re-dock to complete the next. It's a bit irritating but is it supposed to be like this?

Edit: Must have been a bug with that one station - on others I have visited missions from the same faction are all there to be clicked on one after the other then simply exiting the missions screen and going back in brings up the next factions completed mission/s.

Not entirely related, but I am very disappointed to see that the lack-of-planetary-surface-missions bug (introduced by 2.3) is still present in 2.4. The changes made have sadly had no effect on it:

Horizons is only 6-8 months behind schedule. Not as bad as I'd thought!

    Good evening,
Is this where I give feedback on closed Beta?
Not too sure if it belongs here? but cancelled missions still show as a marker on galaxy map. Also ships still show at last location, not at transferred location.

    Hi

I certainly do hope the number of missions will not be reduced after beta. It is about time we have a full and varied mission board. Please keep it this way !

That they are still stackable the old way (take e.g. 3 planetary scan missions, scan one finish all) is something I worry much more about. Not all too many people are complaining about it though, there's money in sight...
