    i agree i would rather FD have spent the time on DDF missing stuff rather than CQC.... but we cant go back now, we have CQC and its *almost* a really good (Eve V beater at any rate) arena shooter in its own right.
    Rather than let it rot i wish FD would finish it off, allow us to make lobbies, send messages inbetween matches, and drop in drop out options with bots being replaced by players.

    I *almost* gave up getting into a game last night but once i was in i had a great time.;

    CQC is fun and I've said it before they should make it free to play to attract new players to the game, stick it on oculus/steam vr, etc and push it out free. Maybe they could ship it as a cheap game on PSVR or playstation+ (I know PS4 doesn't have VR for the main game yet but it might be easier to incorporate into CQC.

    But please, remove that rank from my main game or just have it buried somewhere in the stats.

    i think FD should chat with Sony / oculus / htc and have it as a "free" bundle in with the VR headsets... it would get people playing, AND act as a gateway into the main game, possibly generating sales.
    (bonus points if it could support cross play)

    By this logic, please get rid of engineers, exploration , powerplay and trading, because I don't like them and they irritate me.

    Dudes I've been playing every frcking evening for more than a year, so can't really see your points.

    The problem with regular ships is that most regular ships are far too resilient for the format.

    The main game is built - especially with engineering, but even without - for defence to be stronger than offence. Combat-built ships can easily survive minutes of sustained fire - tens of minutes with engineering, in some cases. Even without engineering, small ships with biweaves can last a very long time, especially if there's cover to hide behind, when fighting other small ships.

    This makes sense - ship loss in the main game is generally fairly inconvenient, and you need the result of a single fight not to depend just on who makes the first mistake, or who gets onto target first.

    In CQC, the current ships are heavily offence-biased. In an 8-person match with good players, there'll probably be 4 or 5 kills per minute, and even faster at the top level of play. Frontier could of course introduce CQC variants of the bigger ships that were heavily under-defended ... but I don't know how popular that would be.

    ...

    It would also, in the current set up, have the effect of further fragmenting the player base. At the moment (on PC), Deathmatch is relatively easy to get at peak times (EU/US evenings), Team Deathmatch can usually be arranged on the busier days via Discord but has virtually no chance of forming naturally, and Capture The Flag is very definitely a "by appointment only" (because most of the regulars prefer TDM to CTF)

    Add extra game modes or extra ship classes, and it'll just make those problems worse. Frontier would need to sort out the in-game queueing mechanisms first - let people see what matches and waiting lists are available, let people talk to the others who are queueing, let people enter the waiting lists (like Multicrew) from the main game.

    ...

    The problem is that the current setup requires a ridiculous number of players to work in-game. Let's say the average person who has any interest in playing CQC at all would play 1 hour/week if it was regularly available. To make the deathmatch queues work at all you need 4 players online at all times. To make them work well - no frustration of being the 9th CQC player online, maybe sort veterans and beginners into different matches a bit, etc... - and to account for timezone fluctuations you probably need 15 or so players online at average times.

    So that's ... 15 * 24 * 7 total players needed. Triple that, so TDM and CTF get matches too, and you need 7500 active players of CQC for it to just basically "work" consistently and always get a match with no more than a few minutes of queueing. Per platform, since we don't have crossplay ... so 22500 players.

    For comparison, the average Community Goal, which are usually well sign-posted, well-paying and can be participated in without any coordination requirements gets around 10,000 participants in a week.

    As the Discord server shows, better inter-participant communications both makes it easier to get a match and easier to get a critical mass of players. The game would be perfectly viable with regular matches with far fewer than 22,500 players *if* those people could communicate easily.

    Yes. Making it so you can easily and routinely get a match, even if it's just with bots (and a lot of players will prefer ONLY bots) is the single most important thing CQC needs. Nothing else matters until this problem gets solved.

    * Bots would help
    * Queuing from the main game would help (via the Multicrew menu, which has the little + signs that could communicate when other people are looking for a match already)

    Bots would help, but then it wouldn't be CQC.

    This, I think was really the main point of it, but it failed. I remembered an article saying it wanted to be the new COD (LOL!), hence the super simple gameplay and low low price. When that wasn't enough, they actually did try giving it away for free, but that didn't work either. Now it just hangs around, like a forgotten leftover casserole in the back of the fridge.

    I wonder how much of the hate for CQC here is out of the embarrassment over having that red rank status taunting everybody on their pilot status panel?

    How so? I have an idea of what you might mean but I don't want to assume.

    There are lots of arena deathmatch games out there. They work just fine with bots without losing their identity.

    If bots would make it possible for me to start a game without needing to wait for other players, I would be all for it! I would assume that these bots go away once the lobby fills up. Being able to instantly jump into a CQC map and practise flying would maybe make cqc more popular?

    I hope it stays active. I don't play often but occasionally, when I do, it is fun. There's still scope to knit it into the main galaxy I think .. always liking the idea of CQC "sports stars" featuring in Galnet articles. It adds more life and I wouldn't object at all to champion CQC players earning 'silly money' credits from sponsorship deals with Core Dynamics, Lakon and the like.

    Instead of just scrapping it, I'd rather see a "heavyweight" mode where we can mess around with our larger ships.
