Thread: The Star Citizen Thread v8

  1. #7816
So.....in a sign of how far Star Citizen is falling behind, it looks like No Mans Sky is getting multiplayer.

Is this important? Is it relevant?

As far as I can tell, while Star Citizen and No Mans Sky have different graphical styles and have a different gameplay focus and different gameplay and mechanics, the actual feature list for both games, what it offers and what the player can do, is fairly similar.

    Base building
    Ship and FPS combat
    Trade, exploration and resource gathering
    Aliens

    And so on

Multiplayer is....was...the only major feature that Star Citizen offered, but No Mans Sky didn't have (blobs not counting as multiplayer for most people )

The latest leak suggests this will shortly change. Of course, we have yet to see how well it works or if it offers opportunities for PvP but, if true, it means Hello Games has essentially created Star Citizen.

OK...different focus, different style, etc but it would show that a game like Star Citizen is possible.

    Time taken? About 6 years.
Team size? Can't have been more than 40. The base game was written by 4, which grew to 12 and spiked up to 30 for specialist work such as art and music.
Cost? Base version is said to have cost about $10 million to make, but even if you state Hello Games spent all the money from all the game sales.....say another $40 million.....on the past two years of updates, $50 million is less than $185 million

I hope Star Citizen launches. I like space games, play ED and NMS...casual basis...and SC looks like it'll feel and play differently from both, enough that it won't come across as the same game.

But hope isn't reality.....and CIGs attempt at a space game looks like a disaster occurring in real time.

But boy do I hope I am wrong. After all, if Hello Games can do it, why not CIG?

(And yes, the obvious answer is "Hello Games doesn't have Chris Roberts)

At this point I guess they are not very big contributors to the project, so I guess not a big loss for CIG...
Maybe that "Big project" for Ben was "Quit exit from CIG"...

I think v3.0 was Unofficial release of SC as Early access...

To be fair, NMS and SC are aiming at rather different niches. There might be some overlap, but not much. A person who likes Star Citizen for what it's promised to be is somewhat unlikely to like No Man's Sky for what it is. They still might enjoy both, but not for the same reasons.

Personally, I don't think Hello Games could have pulled off Star Citizen's crowdfunding, and without that much money up front, it would have been hopeless. It'll be difficult enough for them to implement "true" multiplayer in NMS as it is, but I hope the leaks (nothing official yet) will be true. Mind you, many of Star Citizen's troubles come from the fact that they decided to try and make the game into an MMO as well.

rather seems to be a fail-safe spot to me. If they cannot release whatever they are trying to do they are going to claim 3.0 was indeed the unofficial release.....Star Marine like

    Which I pointed out.

Still...if the leak is true, it removes the one feature SC will have that NMS does not. Multiplayer.

Or at least, mitigates its lack.

Sure, the focus, style and mechanics of the game will be very different. But the feature list? Fairly similar across both games, even if they are implemented differently.

It's a huge win for CIG. They had a long-standing need to get Ben at arms-length, at the very least, and preferably completely gone. The problem was that he had become such a fixture in their public image that they couldn't just dump him — he had to be faded out until he was peripheral to the whole thing.

Now they've finally managed that, and also cut costs without anyone complaining. Everyone wins.

anyone who have "invested" more than $60 bucks in this game and not gotten out is an idiot and should not complain when the SHTF.

the incompetence in CIG is just catching up.....

Im just going to point out that if both of them have left the LA Office to work remotely, it could be for family reasons they dont want publicised.

Yeah, family reasons: the boss' wife doesn't want them on camera or hanging around. How was she EVER going to finally break Hollywood sharing the camera with Ben Lesnick? All those temporary tats for nothing!

Sean Murray went into hiding until they updated NMS to an acceptable level. What will Chris do? Thinking about the whales. One of them might not take to having their dreams ruined and may seek an answer from Chris personally. I bet the butterflies are a flapping in that spacious belly of his.

Hey, if CR's old Origin pal Richard Garriott did it with his Kickstarter project...

    Not fired. Merely refactored.

If CIG have $9M in the bank, it's nowhere near enough.

If you are running a company you need to take monthly pay packets and add 20% for overheads* (and fyi 20% is low).

    So let's say on average per-employee pre-tax earns 2.5K/month (30K annually). That's 3K/m.

Now, let's say they have 400 employees, well that's 1.2M/m.

In which case, $9M will last around 7 months.

    * overheads apply for both perms and contractors e.g. - office space, PC's, severs, admin support, HR, and so on.
