But first I have to nip outside the SRV for a second to have a quick pee (I've been in that hole a long time)!

So, we're on the ridge and I have just enough room for a run up and desparate leap to a ledge I can see in the distance ..

Phew! When I finally get to the top of that rise I can see, over in the distance (to the right of my SRV in the next shot), a flat plain where, if I can make the second jump, I should then be able to recall the ship.

Alas no video of that one but here's me down on that plain looking back up into the valley of death I've just escaped from.

I recall the ship and head off for a 2nd rendezvous with Bomba, a little older but definitely a little wiser.

Beware Planet Wilson ... take your eye of the road and it will eat you alive!

Oh yes, yes you have to.

More or less as Alec said, there are beauty and terror to be found there, in equal parts and as in Alec's case, even at the same time.

As for Bomba, this evening I had the honour of meeting the man himself for a brief time during one of his stops!

It's been a pleasure, drive safe Cmdr. o7

    Day 10

Well Alec you had what I would call a proper Wilson adventure, it was funny starting the day to the news that you got yourself in trouble down there in the Canyon

Unfortunely I can't really provide pictures for it from my perspective, since I didn't see anything from up here. All I know is he was down there somewhere

It does feel bad not being able to help given my history but he made it out and all was well!

He gives me company for a bit and leaves as we arrive close to this thing. wasn't sure what it is, I at first think lets go around it...

... untill I realise that leaves me way too much off track and on the wrong side of the small thin canyon, so I change course to do some climbing

Wasted a bit of time there but not too much and while I go back on track Aken swings by in his beautiful Orca!
As nice of a ship as it is the orca is his looks and sounds always make him a bit creepy from the perspective of the srv

    Lets ruin the paint!

    Golden SRV acrobatics :D

But he almost fell goofing around :p

He has to leave and does a flyby

But before he goes he spots an NPC! All the many hours and days I spent on this planet while a was stranded and now doing this trip and never encountered a npc on Wilson, very nice first contact

I guess he is an offical citizen of Wilson! His name is Bongartz, Shipname "Unyielding Riot" and his hobby is... apparently shooting down Condors, as he was parked right next to this:

Then I go back on track arriving back on the side of the canyon
    Hello again!

Further ahead half a crater at the side of the canyon

But me and the canyon will have to part ways here as he curves away from a route now. Terrain is gonna be easy to drive from here but I hope this isn't a bad omen

I cover a lot of ground being able to get the speed going for the most part until I start to see Mt. Turner peeking out on the horizon for the first time

Driving some more I have to stop, aside from mt turner the other big mountain peeks out on the horizon now too, to the right of the core

    Made camp at -14.91/-15.73

Waypoint 5 not too far away now, should make it there today. Once there I will have to make a decision: Do I really want to take the way to the Mad Mans Ridge just so I can make the risky jump or do I take the safe way?
I'm not gonna take the safe way

Notice for anyone willing to track Bomba's progresses on the surface and intercept him for a meet & greet: despite the many days spent alone on Wilson and the potential PTSD the experience is causing him, the guy is very nice and friendly as ever, but Space Dementia is clearly starting to insinuate in his psyche. Expect somewhat random behaviour from time to time:

This one is gonna take you a LONG time.... love the mountain though. I soon will be performing a planetary circumnavigation of Red River Run.

Nice, another one for the Club!

And don't worry about me Aken, I'm in my element driving about in the srv

On to Day 10, put many hours in and got a lot of progress done. starting off it was night but I really feel the day and night cycle here should be 3 Parts: Day, bright night with the core in the sky and night night when the core is gone beyond the horizon
Properly dark, hard to say where I'm going

There is something lying around here, more poor souls

I also started to realise I made a bad thinking mistake, what I tought was mt turner I saw peaking out on the horizon actually was just some smaller mountain that I pass earlier on. I forgott about those lol. And so I got carried away climbing one of them

Made it to the top, I think. Can't see anything!

Having a break I came back for the next session when it was morning on Wilson
Much better to enjoy the view now

And on top of this little mountain it looks like somebody build an area for shiplanding

Then I have to jump down, its just a small mountain so what could go wrong?

Now I definitly can see Mt. Turner there

There is a smaler Mountain beforehand and I originaly planned drive between the two

But ended up climbing anyway :D

A bit complicated at times but I eventually made it to the top

Having another break when I came back Alec was there to join me!
Alltough there weren't any suitable landingplaces for him where I was

So I jump down, took me a good while to come to a stop

And then we go on to drive together, but as it is with those things driving isn't necessary the best word to describe it

Looking back the view there is very stunning

    SRVs chillin'

Tried to take a shot midair with both of us flying

And I tought I got a got shot of Alect flying straight at my Camera but I appears I hit the button a bit too late

After we had a good ride he needed to leave but not without some Fireworks!

From there it didn't take me long to get to the Mad Mans Ridge
    Going on it

    A last look back

to my left I can see a Canyon, should be the one that I eventually end up jumping across

The way ahead is getting snakey

Stopped there for the day at -13.60/-51.52

Getting close to the jump, looking very much forward to it!

Hey Bomba! Just wanted to say again what a great privilege and pleasure it was to share a tiny bit of your journey with you yesterday (hope I didn't slow you down too much). I have quite a lot of video (and a couple of screenshots) from our time together and will be uploading those later today (once I've edited out the bits where your SRV is a tiny dot in the distance - I have to say that Tannik made following one speeding SRV in another look easy but in practice, keeping pace with you, trying to keep your SRV in shot and making sure I kept an eye on my own high speed landings at the same time turned out to be quite a challenge!).

Good luck for the rest of your journey! (who knows, I may yet return to join you for the final leg but for now I'm safely back in the bubble and am currently prospecting for arsenic in Deciat before heading off to this week's Buckyball Race).

This is awesome. I remember when you had your first experience on Wilson, Bomba. It was one of the coolest events ever in ED. Your attitude and spirit made what should have been a disaster into an adventure.

So, as Bomba has said, I had a 3rd and final meetup with the heroic/foolhardy commander yesterday afternoon.

When I first fly to Bomba's location I find our interpid explorer perched on top of a mountain. And before we go any further I'd like to add that, for someone who's destroyed their ship and stranded themself on a planet with only one SRV, Mr Luigi does not strike me as ... how shall I put this? ... well, let's just say that he's not as cautious as one might expect!

With no obvious landing spots for me the first thing I do is film his descent down the mountain. Like he says in the chat window - "full speed ahead and leave it to faith".

Edit: oh, and in case you're wondering why I have "CHICKEN!" spelled out on my dashboard, it's because the last time I flew the DBX I was taking part in the Buckyball "Chicken Run" race.

Once at the bottom (and once he's managed to stop!) I deploy the SRV and spend the next hour or so attempting to keep up!

During a brief halt we look back the way we've come and take in a breaktaking view.

All too soon it's time for me to go. Gifts and fireworks are exchanged ..

.. and then, for now at least, it's farewell to planet Wilson. I look back knowing that somewhere, down there, a tiny SRV is continuing it's inexorable crawl around this deceptively peaceful looking planet.

Drive safe commander! (yeaahhh ... righhhhht).

There was a last thing I had to do on planet Wilson, before leaving Cmdr Bomba Luigi to the rest of his adventure and head out for the Lagoon Nebula:

"I came to get down, I came to get down
So get out your seat and jump around!

    Jump around!
    Jump around!
    Jump around!
Jump up, jump up and get down!"

Start by driving past your own ship? check
    Big jump? check
    Awesome Hip hop soundtrack? check
Survive and finish looking back up at the mountain? check

I give that video 8.5/10! (you lost a point for missing a few kickers on the way down and half a point for running out of music before the end)

I'll add that to the "good basejumping locations" thread if I may?

I mean, I'm still alive so there is no gain in being more cautious. Can't be more alive, right?

And great Videos, with some good choice of music, its funny seeing me from someone elses perspective. But also a bit weird, like hearing your voice on a recording
And thanks for your kind words Alec and Artigan, but don't speak to highly of me at the end of the day I'm just a silly Man with an SRV having a bit of fun.

And a good base jump Aken, got your Hull down quite a lot at some point! Almost made a crash site for me to visit

  14. #74
Sorry, you're probably all sick of these by now but just for the sake of completion ..

Aken's post reminded me that I'd done a Wilson base jump too so here it is:

Start by driving past your own ship? NO
    Big jump? check
    Awesome Hip hop soundtrack? NO
Survive and finish looking back up at the mountain? check

Hmmm, seems the above are not hard and fast rules for basejump videos after all. I'm still giving myself 8/10 for catching a few kickers and doing a somersault tho!

I like how the final 3rd of the video is basically me trying to stop. Anyone else think we should be able to toss an anchor out of the window or deploy a breaking parachute or something?

OK, that's it Bomba. I've finished now - back to you!
