    DRABBLE POLL: "Contagion"

This week, out of gratitude to Ian for his help, I tried to get Darcy (again) to help with the judging. Apparently, all the 'Strictly' judges have succumbed to a mysterious and highly contagious illness.

Any of you who have survived the week's epidemic, please remove the rubber gloves and surgical masks, and vote for the 3 drabbles that tickle your emotions the most.

    1. The Lone Gunman “Zombies with Style”

He ran and ran, no matter how fast he went or where he fled in the vastness of space, the most hideous experimental Contagion known to man followed

Effects were horrendous, no one died they just changed

It spread rapidly all over the skin changing it, no one person had the same colour or texture and when changed they herded together, hundreds, thousands, millions!

    Seeking out others to infect, and now they had him surrounded;
they were drilling into his ship, his time short.

Their chanting, over and over, would soon be his!

    "And that's why I wear a Onesie"

    2. Frank “JobsNet. When You Need a Career Change, Fast!”

As fighters became more reliant on flight-assist, computing power became more important. The Makarian was an example of this. It used a dendritic protein set in a carbohydrate jelly to provide a quantum neural net that gave it an edge over previous fighters.

It was built tough too, which was what Hugh was finding out at the moment. Even removing the access plate to check the computer's chemistry was proving difficult. He removed his mask and panted.

The plate hit the floor with a clank. There it was, the galaxy's most powerful computer looking like seaweed in jam. Hugh sneezed.

    3. Yaffle. “All that glisters”

The prisoner, Anoushka, was to be mocked. Captured after a fight, the statesman’s daughter; paraded at the Imperial banquet. She’d been enhanced, of course, Imperial seamstresses making the most of what she had, which was impressive to start with. Everyone wished to dance with her, to touch her, to be photographed with her. Silent, steely, she withstood it all, she knew the plan and her part to play. Sparkling she did her work.
After the last dance, escorted to her cell, she noted the now silent stylist was cold already. Anoushka smiled, knowing in the morning only she would remain.

    4. Darkoba. “Immunity”

They used to visit, unannounced and uninvited, after my every home-coming. They came to drink my beer, and laugh at me and my stories behind their sleeves. It used to hurt.

These days, it wouldn't hurt - I've developed a thick hide - but they don't come around any more. Last time was when I arrived home from a trip through the quarantined Anathuria system.

I had developed a slight fever. The medic said I had an unusual, a unique immune system.

I don't miss my tormentors. I'd rather not see them anyway, but sometimes I wonder what stopped them coming around.

    5. Kroy. "Death on the Rocks"

Don’t eat yellow snow. Did it count for ice? It wasn’t exactly yellow, but definitely more opaque than it should be. I picked up the spanner from the tool block in the cargo bay and walked over to it. Rescue the survivors, they said. Right. I wasn’t equipped for humanitarian relief, but in this part of the galaxy, you take what you get. Scanners showed the body wasn’t actually dead, just comatose. The ice must’ve saved him. I chipped away at nearest corner. The ice flecks pinged off. I wouldn’t be using it to chill my liquor, it smelled funny.

    6. Gibbonici. “Closure”

    Everything came down to this.

She is seven, sitting by the lake, all lit up in gold in the Centaurian sunhaze. She shines brighter than the sparkles on the water. When she was three she thought they were fairies.

"Warning." The memory breaks; she's gone. "Biocontainment breach on deck seven."

    "I know," he slurs.

Sweat soaks him. His head roars. His eyes weep pus or tears, it makes no difference.

He reaches for the pistol. His eyes shut. His finger tightens.

She looks out across the water and fairies sparkle and flit around her.

It all comes down to this.

    7. MarktJones. “Davids vs Goliaths”

Our ship shot forwards, punching me back in my seat. Beam lasers sheared off our shield as we shot past the automated defences and the warning beacon.

    ‘I’m just saying.’

‘Look at them, Girl2,’ Girl1 said, gazing at the line of anacondas wrecks.

‘But if it’s a test range, they’ll be stripped. And the freaky warning?’

‘Military testing,’ Girl1 said with a smile. ‘The military likes waste. They’ll be something.’

‘It doesn’t look like weapons damage,’ I said. ‘More like they’ve been eaten.’

“What could possibly eat an anaconda?’

    ‘Something small.’

Then our systems started to fail. Life support first.

    8. Ian Phillips. “One way”

Somewhere out there is a planet ringed with defense satellites. A sphere of lasers, tracking satellites, masses of missile launchers and some of the biggest guns you have ever seen. It’s very strange.

A blanket warning message blasts from your inboard speakers as soon as you get within range. All frequencies and set to maximum volume. You cannot ignore it! It doesn’t order you to leave, it just warns you not to land, which is of course what my partner did.

Curiosity is an itch you shouldn’t always scratch.

The strange thing? All defenses point downwards.

    He’s not coming back.

    9. Psykokow “All The Rage”

The sweat dripped from his brow onto the console, pooling around his controls and giving off the odd sizzle.
“Man, I'm really feeling rough... I thought those vitamins were meant to help?”
“Yeah” said Jinny “Did you take them all? Like I said?”
“Yeah.. 2 in the morning and 3 at night...” he wiped his scarlet brow
“interesting” fervently scribbling into his notebook.. “and the hallucinations?”
“Well they’re definitely improving” he sneezed hard and droplets of blood hit his ship window.
“It will all pass soon I'm sure...” assured Dr Jinny Pig “These vitamins are going to be very popular”

    10. W4rSkull. “A New Arrival”

The passengership door opens and a man stumbles out, pale, sweaty and almost dead.

A girl pulls the arm of her mother and points in the direction of the new arrival.
"Look at the sick man", she say. "Can we help him?" She is about to walk over to the unconscious man.
Claire grips her daugthers arm. "No, it can be dangerous".
Some strangers walk up to the dead man, and lifts him away.
When Claire arrives at home, those men are dead.

The extremly contagious disease Z-99 arrived in Freeworld 23 in 3456.
Freeworld is now known as Deadworld.

    11. Philip Coutts. “What the Federation are Really Like (blatant Imperial propaganda alert)”

The strategy was magnificent in its simplicity and better still the chances of the epidemic being traced back to the Federation minute. The preparation was straightforward; despite the Imperial propaganda not all slaves were happy.

They had told her the injections were to aid her recuperation from the beatings, before her rescue. They lied. Her recovery was swift but the disease they had infected her with was slowly mutating.

They “delivered” her to Achernar, the ultimate Trojan horse, they told her to spy on the Empire, they didn’t tell her she and thousands of others would die in endless agony.

    12. Darren Grey. “Destroy All Humans”

It started on one planet, spreading fast, adapting ecosystems to its own means and annihilating other species.

Then it became spaceborn, and it spread even faster. Resources on other worlds were sucked clean as the plague moved from system to system. Foreign lifeforms were wiped out, even a sentient race.

The most disgusting feature of the plague was how it attacked itself, units grouping and fighting each other, only the strongest and meanest surviving.

It was a clear threat to the whole galaxy.

"What does it call itself?" asked the Thargoid Queen.

    "Humans," replied her attendant.

    "They must be eradicated."

    13. Iain M Norman “The Eve of War”

Now, the time has come for us to act. This night - for many of us our last night - we will conquer our nemesis and we will eradicate it forever. For too long has it been a scourge upon the whole universe.

No longer can we allow it to take our families from us. No longer will we suffer at the hands of this indiscriminate slaughter. No longer will this disease spread its destruction across the stars.

Go forth my children, and my children’s children, and their children ad infinitum. Go forth and destroy the human race.

    Go forth and multiply.

    14. Azdour “A Question of Federation Intelligence”

The doctors crammed around the screen. A Federation symbol slowly spun.
The screen faded to a new face, his name was unknown, but they recognised his title.

“I will cut to the chase. I am new but I know what I am doing, so listen carefully.”

    The doctors leaned in attentively.

“I have a situation that my predecessors have failed to resolve”.

“I understand you can handle all types of contagion?”

    They nodded.

“I want a cure to the contagion of lies from the Imperials...”

The doctors sighed... Why did the Federation test the intellect of new officers this way?

    15. Bikky. “We Need Help”

‘PEOPLE, LISTEN UP!’ Shouted the chairman. The medical conclave fell silent. ‘Now this has been the third planet to fall, and we need help. NOW! This is moving, filmed without people knowing. We now have consent.’

A holovid screen flickered into life, depicting a field of dead and dying, attended by a medical volunteer. The scene then changed showing the medical volunteer in a small quarantine, his face drawn and breaking out in sores. The scene pans out to encompass a girl bashing on the window, music fades out to the sobbing cries. ‘Daddy nooo, why are you leaving me?’

    16. Garthyre. “Twilight”

    You laughed at me.

You found my habits entertaining, and failed to understand why I bottled my waste, burned used tissues, let my hair grow.

I broke a nail today - my favourite, we had been together so long. I've put it with the others all curled up against the cold steel trays.

The servants left me. With their whispering, sour faces they won't be missed. Just me in one room with panoramic views and everything I need to sustain my life.

Now the skies are empty, the lights slowly go out across the city below. I think I'll miss you.

    17. Musashi. “Covenant”

Angelina massaged her aching eyes with trembling hands as she considered the lab reports again. She couldn't sleep, anyway. Over a third of the colony was infected, and still the virus, codenamed 'Isaac', defied their quarantine efforts. Vector unknown; almost 100% mortality.

Just one had survived - a child. So, the only vaccine Angelina could make had to come from him. But to have any chance of saving the remaining thousands, she would need all of his blood.

Angelina's tears fell freely on to the small, sleeping form that stirred before her.

"Hush, my son," she whispered. "Everything will be alright."

    18. Insanephoton. “Containment”

The message is stark and in its cold simplicity there is a brutal truth.

'Level five bio-hazard containment breach at Fleming Research Station. Sterilisation procedure initiated'.

Something has gone badly wrong out there, something got out. Level five means it is one of the most dangerous pathogens known to humanity. It's so dangerous that we cannot risk it leaving the station.

There are 347 people on that station. Some of them are friends. All of them have only seconds to live.

The vid screen shows the bright flash as the thermonuclear device explodes.

'Sterilisation procedure completed. Bio-security maintained. Breach eliminated.'

I seem to be missing the actual poll

EDIT: I guess I was too quick off the mark.

Yes indeed. What eagerness to vote! Why didn't you take one of the last two slots and write a drabble

  4. #4
Apert from the fact my dribbles ae terrible, just happened to be passing when you posted it...

Well, you're welcome anytime. You never know, the weekly drabble theme might inspire you. Newbie drabblers often score high.

  6. #6
This has been the most difficult to choose from, up to now - for me, anyway.

When I posted my drabble, I thought it had a reasonably good chance of a healthy score... But now? I would bear the 'nul points' badge with honour

What a fantastic set of drabbles!

    8 voters, 22 votes?

Well done Dar'koba! And thanks for correcting my mistake. Of course it was a deliberate mistake to see if you are on the ball. <avoids eye contact to hide the fact he's lying>

That's the hard part over. You can now just lie back and enjoy the fruits of your labour.

It is up to three votes. The time to start worrying is when the average is OVER 3 votes per voter

Thanks for that, I needed a laugh

Just about to take some (solid) sustenance, then the drinks are on me, See you later in the Thargoid & Fer-de-Lance?

Errrm, yes, well... apparently there's not a lot of fruit on my tree

Too much subtlety? Lacking in oomph? Not enough long-haired damsels and razzamatazz? Will I ever learn?

Many good ones around this time to Darren hits jackpot again with the Thargoid queen realising the human menace must be wiped out. I like it

It's a fairly subtle link between the homecoming and quarantine system, people might miss it if they skim the drabbles.

Or just accept that genius is never recognised in its own time.

Thank you for the 'subtle' compliment

And anyway, as an 'artiste', <sigh, with a Miss Piggy accent> I don't want votes from people who merely skim drabbles!!!

PS. If your theory is correct, there's an awful lotta skimmers out there

  13. #13
At least you're off the ground. I still got nuthin'. People are penalising me for that terrible Transylvanian pun. But I tells ya, I enjoyed the pain I inflicted. And given have the chance I'd do it again <manic laughter>... <completely-over-the-top manic laughter>... <even worse shrieks of laughter whilst strapped in a strait-jacket and getting carted away by two hospital porters>

Never mind Frank (strangely enough, I heard myself saying that with HAL's voice -spooky), I've bribed the porters to carry you off to the T&FdL and release you there. There's an Intergalatic Gargle Blaster with your name on it waiting.

I know, I know, I'm just that kinda guy.

PS> I've just re-read your drabble, and I like it.
I refer you to the comment made by MarktJones "... just accept that genius is never recognised in its own time."

It's still a close run race, so far (although voting seems to have stagnated a bit).

Yaffle's in the lead with seven, Darren Grey and Insanephoton snapping at his heels, closely followed by Musashi then Garthyre. <deep breath>

The rest of the field is closely bunched behind...

The end-result looks obvious, but with twenty-four hours (ish) to go, it's still anybody's race.

Are any more punters going to place bets, er, vote?
