    Journeys end...

So this is it. We're now heading out to our final goal, out on the very edges of the Milky Way and across 10,000 light years of the Solitude Void... Beagle Point.

This star system on the edge of the intergalactic void offers all who reach it a real sense of remoteness as you look back at the very distant core regions, 35,000 light years away, and realize home is yet another 30,000 light years beyond that! Outwards looking you see nothing but the vast inky blackness of intergalactic space. There are not many places in the galaxy that can give an explorer this sense of scale.

This final leg is one I'd recommend fleet members to do alone - just like the first pioneers out here did in the early days of exploration. It'll bring home the isolation of being out here, and how cut off from humanity back in the bubble you are. I'd also recommend switching off fleetcomms too, and embrace the solitude out in the real void!

Reaching Beagle Point our basecamp sits on the day/night terminator of the 2nd planet, giving those who land there a great view of the distant Milky Way as it hangs there above a nearby mountain range. The basecamp terrain is quite rough but should pose no problems for those who have endured all that the previous basecamp landings along the way have thrown at us.

    Routes to Beagle Point...

For those with a basic jump range of less than 34 light years, there are several routes to Beagle Point available. Two of which can be found under the "Routes to Beagle Point" section on Post #2 of the main DWE thread : Here

These routes cover the final 500-1,000 light years of our journey, and will show you where Jumponium boosts are likely needed.

    Basecamp Details...

    MARCH 22ND 3302

Waypoint 22 - THE SUBLUSTRIS BEACON

PRIME RENDEZVOUS : FRIDAY 25TH MARCH 3302 AT 19:00 GAMETIME (UTC) FOR EURO PLAYERS AND 7 HOURS LATER AT 02:00 GAMETIME (UTC) FOR USA PLAYERS

Situated on the far edge of the 'southeastern' part of the Abyss, the Sublustris Beacon acts as a 61,000 LY from Sol distance marker and a navigational waypoint for starships heading out to the galactic rim from the Roncevaux Crossing. It is almost exactly 10,000 LYs to Beagle Point from this beacon star system. This is our penultimate base camp gathering, after which we set off across the vast Solitude Void... a lonely journey out to the galactic fringe through ever sparser star systems, beyond which awaits our final goal.

For those in low-range ships struggling to plot a route between WP21 and WP22, CMDR Marcos Black has recently managed it in a 25.6 LY ship. Here is the route he took ...

Note that some manual plotting will be needed at times when crossing the Abyss. Route is in reverse order with WP22 at the top :

    MARCH 16TH 3302

Waypoint 21 - THE RONCEVAUX CROSSING

PRIME RENDEZVOUS : MONDAY 21ST MARCH 3302 AT 19:00 GAMETIME (UTC) FOR EURO PLAYERS AND 7 HOURS LATER AT 02:00 GAMETIME (UTC) FOR USA PLAYERS

Before heading out across the Abyss, we gather at its southern edge and stock up on Jumponium fuel as this will be essential the closer to our final goal we travel. When crossing the Abyss, we skirt around the Chiea Pocket badlands and begin the final leg of the outbound journey - crossing the inhospitable Solitude Void and edge our way to the distant Ceeckia star systems.

Those wanting to take part in this weekends Key Prospecting Event are advised to reach the Roncevaux Crossing early - see this thread for more details.

    Waypoint 20 - OUPAILKS FURNACE

PRIME RENDEZVOUS : TUESDAY 15TH MARCH 3302 AT 19:00 GAMETIME (UTC) FOR EURO PLAYERS AND 7 HOURS LATER AT 02:00 GAMETIME (UTC) FOR USA PLAYERS

We're now deep in the Bleak Lands. Stretching across 20,000 LYs of the Aphelion regions, the Bleak Lands are an enormous expanse of sectors that contain very little in the form of nebulae and star clusters.

Here we make basecamp in 'The Pit' - A 1.12G High Metal Content World orbiting its parent star at a mere 8 LS away. Surface temperature on the daylight side of this world can reach up to 1,534K. This is an inhospitable place in a desolate region and it is from here that we begin one of the longest treks between waypoints; 8,700 LYs across the Scutum-Centaurus Arm.

    BASECAMP 20 SYSTEM : OUPAILKS BB-M C8-5
    PLANET/MOON : 1
    COORDINATES : 3.73 / -135.70 (The Pit)

    Waypoint 19 - RENDEZVOUS POINT

PRIME RENDEZVOUS : SATURDAY 12TH MARCH. 3302 18:00 GAMETIME (UTC) FOR BOTH EURO AND USA PLAYERS

Due to its historical significance and coverage by GalNet news networks back in human space at the time, Rendezvous Point subsequently became an explorers 'must see' location on the far side of the galaxy. The system has now been fully surveyed by many different deep space explorers since that first historic meeting. Our basecamp is on a ringed moon orbiting the outermost planet.

    BASECAMP 19 SYSTEM : EACTAINDS GN-W C1-6
    PLANET/MOON : 5 A
    COORDINATES : 9.58 / -35.59 (Columbus Basin)
    SURFACE GRAVITY : 0.41

    MARCH 6TH 3302

Waypoint 18 - THE GREEROI VEIL
This small nebula can be tricky to reach due to it being high above the galactic plane. The view from the Veil as you look out across the galactic core is one not to miss. Ships with 34 LYs or more range will be able to enter the nebula itself without the use of Jumponium, although smaller ranged ships may need to use J1 jumps. Our base camp is around 50 light years below the Veil.

The Greeroi Veil marks the final nebula along our route. After this meetup we begin the long trek across the Aphelion Bleak Lands toward the Abyss.

    PLANET/MOON : B 1
    COORDINATES : -38.05 / -82.51 (Camp Amundsen)

FLEET STATUS : EN ROUTE TO THE MAGNUS NEBULA

Waypoint 17 - THE MAGNUS NEBULA
Less than 1,000 LYs from the mysterious Bleia Borders, the Magnus Nebula is one of the largest so far discovered on the far galactic core. Embedded within are several thousand star systems - including several neutron stars. This waypoint marks the end of Stage 3 of the Distant Worlds Expedition. Stages 4 and 5 will soon be upon us and these two stages are by far the most challenging part of the journey as we begin our trip across the uncharted Perseus Stem and head into the Galactic Bleak Lands.

    Key Event:
On Sunday at 18:00 gametime (for both Euro & USA player groups), there will be another key launch event. This time from the basecamp 11 landing zone (Armstrong Landing). Prior to this, around 16:30 gametime Sunday, fleet members are encouraged to gather at Sag-A* for video and photo shoots.

Details for Waypoints 12 & 13 will be posted over the weekend so players can choose whether to head to the Phipoea Nebula via Altum Sagittarii after Sunday's key events, or head directly to the Phipoea Nebula instead. If you don't have much game time next week, I'd recommend skipping Waypoint 12.

    This weekends schedule:
    • Thursday - arrive at Waypoint 11.
    • Friday and Saturday - explore the galactic core.
    • Sunday 16:30 gametime regroup at Sag-A* for video and photo opportunities.

    PLANET/MOON : 2 C
    COORDINATES : -15.82 / -72.29 (Mt. Hillary)
    SURFACE GRAVITY : 0.12
PRIME RENDEZVOUS : SUNDAY 14TH FEB. 3302 18:00 GAMETIME (UTC) FOR BOTH EURO & USA PLAYER GROUPS

Update: Since the basecamp was first scouted back in December, the planet has rotated along its long orbital period to a point where the Wisteria Nebula has set below the horizon. The designated landing zone remains in effect and is still the place to meet fellow pilots, wing up, look for good locations to grab screenshots of the nebula, and explore the local systems together.

This upcoming point of interest marks the beginning of Stage 3 of our journey across the galaxy. Stage 3 officially starts on Sunday and lasts for the next 3 weeks of the expedition - taking in nine waypoints, with some of them being the most spectacular so far visited!

Waypoint 9 - The Athaip Wisteria Nebula - is a blue coloured ejecta cloud nebula surrounding a black hole and sits toward the southern edge of the galactic core regions. The nebula itself has no planets to land on but a visit to the system is worth it just to see the gravitational effects on the blue glowing ejecta cloud. Our basecamp is in a neighbouring system. Close by is the Great Annihilator black hole, something I encourage players to make excursions to once in the Athaip sector.

    Basecamp 9 Guide :

The landing zone at basecamp 9 is slightly different to those that have come before it. Instead of a single camp, this LZ is split into several mini-plateaus separated by small ravines. Each plateau should have room for several ships to safely land there. SRV excursions to other parts of the LZ will require drivers to make small 'hops' across the shallow ravines. The basecamp sits at the foot of a small mountain ridge (Mt. Hillary).

FULL WAYPOINT 6 DETAILS INCLUDING BASE CAMP GUIDE WILL BE POSTED MONDAY 1ST FEB.

Stage 2 (Leaving Home Behind) :
This is a more difficult part of our journey than Stage 1. We only have three base camp rendezvous points along this stretch of the expedition, and they're spread across nearly 13,000 light years - stretching across the Norma Expanse from the near Norma arm and out to the very edges of the galactic outer core. So there are likely to be long periods of travel where you're on your own out there. The distant base camps will offer welcome and sociable rest spots for weary pilots arriving from across the Expanse. *We have approximately 2 weeks to complete Stage 2.

*From Stage 2 onward the FGE flotilla will be traveling at a slower pace across the galaxy than that of the main fleet. This is for the benefit of players with less time to commit to the venture from this point onward and will also suit those who want to spend more time exploring the systems along the Distant Worlds route. For the month of February the FGE will be hosting a series of meetups at the base camps. They will be monitoring the progress tracker and the attendance at the meetups - and in light of this may adjust the pace of their travel accordingly. More details on the flotilla can be found : Here.

Accident at Drake's Ridge see's two players returned to the bubble :

Just a heads up - we're coming to a point of no return for a lot of players now as we move further away from civilization. Tonight an accident at Drake's Ridge saw a pilot have his Asp destroyed and a nearby parked ship suffer severe hull damage in the explosion - effectively forcing the innocent bystander back to the bubble for repairs.

Please be considerate and realize that one of the great aspects of this trip has been the trust players have built up at base camps - where we feel comfortable at leaving our ships parked - often acting as markers for incoming pilots. Lets not ruin that trust by reckless flybys or doing stunts close to other peoples ships.

If you want to do that kind of flying near other players, use your own groups or open play, but keep it out of the DW private group from now on.

    Cheers.

    Departing Waypoint 1 :

Today marks the end of our stay in the Fine Ring sector as pilots throughout the fleet are beginning to depart and begin the 3,800 Light Year trip across the Sagittarius Gap towards Waypoint 2.

Our destination is The Lagoon Nebula.

There is no set time for departing the Fine Ring Sector, and the next official fleet gathering will not be until Friday 22nd January, so there is plenty of time for even the slowest ships in the fleet to get out there in time for next weekends events. I'd encourage players who are leaving Laika's Rest today, and who have the time, to slowboat it across the Gap over the next few days and enjoy some localized exploration along the route before next weekends mass gathering - as this is one of only a few occasions where you'll have the luxury of a leisurely stroll between base camp meetups. There is a lot to see and visit in the Sagittarius Gap and the FGE Wings have been busy scouting some interesting sites between Waypoint 1 and Waypoint 2 - check them out : Here.

    The Route :

From Shapley 1, travel across the Sagittarius Gap and avoid the Aucocks Pocket by plotting a route around 100 LYs above or below the galactic plane. The Aucocks Pocket is a layer of unscoopable T-Tauri and Brown Dwarf sectors that are considered to be the first navigational hazard that travelers encounter when heading coreward. As a general rule, if you hyperspace into two consecutive unscoopable star systems, check your plotted route, there's a chance you could be drifting into this badland region.

Reaching the far side of the Sagittarius Gap there is an optional excursion open to see Thor's Eye. For those that want a minor detour, this black hole system is worth a quick visit just prior to reaching the Lagoon Nebula.

Advisory Warning : Those conducting the expedition in open play, be advised that a pirate wing has been sighted in and around Thor's Eye and they have attacked lone pilots traveling ahead of the main fleet.

The Lagoon Nebula is Waypoint 2 on our journey, and during the same weekend we will also be making brief visits to Waypoint 3 (Sunday 24th) and Waypoint 4 (Monday 25th) before we head out to the final Waypoint of Stage 1 (towards the end of this month). Waypoints 2, 3, and 4 are very close together with only around 90 minutes travel time between each base camp location.

    - larger scale map is available on the main DW Thread

Special Event for Fleet Cartographers and Prospectors :

The nature of the region that Waypoints 2, 3 and 4 are situated in, with all the visual beauty it offers and the wealth of astrophysical phenomena found out there, has made it a colonization candidate. Calls for tourism infrastructure and scientific outposts to be constructed throughout the region are being lead by the Pioneers Cooperative. The Cooperative are tasking Distant Worlds Cartographers, Prospectors, and Explorers to look for that ideal candidate star system ripe for colonization.

A competition for this is underway and this is a great opportunity for fleet members to take part as we pass through this interesting region of the galaxy. Competition details can be found : Here

Guide to Base Camp 2 : Tinné's Endevour

Tinné's Endevour is located on a large rock and ice moon orbiting a ringed gas giant with a highly eccentric orbit - giving pilots a spectacular view from the surface. The Base Camp sits within an overlapping pair of impact craters, which are themselves situated between two distinctive gigantic ice canyons, running parallel with the equator.

    Latest News :

Both timezone fleets successfully departed the Pallaeni system on schedule and crossed the Frontier to the Fine Ring Sector.
The combined fleet will spend the next couple of days in that region conducting exploration excursions of the Base Camp 1 system and the surrounding region.

Several exploration wing events are schedule for Saturday 16th January.

This weekend is probably your last chance to change your ship loadout, or get minor repairs made before we begin heading further away from human colonized space. If you need to replace a lost SRV or patch things up, best do it now while we're only 1,000 light years away from the nearest repair and resupply facilities.

    WEEK 1

    THU 14 JAN 20:00 (UTC) 02:00 (UTC) 0 – Fleet Departs Pallaeni A 1 Brooks Point 58 / -145 0.06G
    FRI 15 JAN 19:00 (UTC) 01:00 (UTC) 1 – Shapley 1 Fine Ring Sector JH-V C2-4 A 1 Laika's Rest -19 / 85 0.09G

This week, on January 14th 3302, we depart colonized space and begin our first steps out into the galaxy; crossing the Frontier and traveling out to Waypoint 1.

Players should gather at Pallaeni, Planet 1, and land close to Brooks Point. Brooks Point (Base Camp 'Zero') is a secure location so don't 'buzz' them unless you want a 400 CR fine and a wanted status. Our landing site is around 3kms away at the coordinates in the table above. Its rough terrain so if you want a good parking spot, get there early. A lot of players will probably be there a couple of hours early to film and livestream ships coming and going.

As you are aware by now (if you read the announcements! ;)), there are many players from many different timezones taking part in the expedition. So some time back it was announced that the fleet will have a Euro Zone and a US Zone, as these constitute the vast majority of players who have signed up. The US Zone is 6 hours behind the Euro Zone.

Everyone should depart Base Camp Zero at :
20:00 Gametime (UTC), 14th Jan. 3302 (for Euro Zone players), or
02:00 Gametime (UTC) 15th Jan. 3302 (for US Zone players).

There will be no announcement on here telling you to take off and begin the journey, but a reminder will be posted in the Skype & Discord announcements channel and players will most likely make everyone aware on TS too, but on the whole this is the time to leave and head towards our first Waypoint - out near the Shapley 1 Wolf-Rayet star, ~900 LYs away. Our exact destination is the system designated :

Fine Ring Sector JH-V C2-4, Planet 1. Base Camp coordinates for that Waypoint (Laika's Rest) are in the table above.

    Launch Day Livestreams:

Euro Zone Livestream begins from 19:00 Gametime (UTC), 14th Jan. (to be confirmed).

US Zone Livestream begins from 01:00 Gametime (UTC), 15th Jan. (to be confirmed).

    Base Camp Guides:

The original plan was to ask FD to put some landing lights out at each camp but sadly it wasn't possible, so we'll be relying on experienced pilots finding the coords and guiding other lesser experienced pilots in. If you need help locating a Base Camp, check out the visual guide(s) linked below - they will give you an idea of what to look for when in low orbit, alternatively use local in-game text chat to request landing assistance - there's a good chance that other pilots will already be there and willing to add you to their wing and drop a wing beacon for you to lock onto.

A visual guide to the Waypoint 1 Base Camp can be found here : Approaching Laika's Rest
More in-depth information, guides, charts, and navigational help on the POIs and Base Camps we'll be visiting can be found here : [Distant Worlds] FGE Astrographics Department

For players new to Horizons and planetary landings, I highly recommend you practice landings on a variety of terrains and worlds before we leave, and practice picking a coordinate on the surface and trying to locate it. It can be a tricky skill to master. There is a brief guide to planetary landings and locating surface coordinates located in Post #2 of the main DW thread, under the heading "6.. Planetary Landings Guide & Locating Coordinates:". But its no substitute for practice.

    Locating Target Worlds/Moons (example system):

    The wider schedule :

Of the 23 Waypoint meetings scheduled on the expedition, 5 will be midweek events - this is because a lot of players cannot play on a weekend so it allows those players to at least have some social gatherings to enjoy during the journey to Beagle Point.

The vast majority of meetups will last the whole weekend, with players arriving on a Friday evening and exploring the designated POI area until Sunday, before pilots begin to drift away to the next Waypoint scheduled later that week.

The times posted are guides - no one expects you to arrive at the exact time stated or leave at a specific time either. Get there early if you can, or get there late if you can't :)... point is you'll have a whole weekend to meet fellow explorers and join in with the organized excursions that the FGE Cartography Wings will be running (info on these Wings can be found : Here). Again, no one is obliged to join in any events, if you want to explore with friends or alone, its entirely up to you. The fleet comms that players have set up are there for you to use if you need them.

    Week 1 in summary :

Gather at Base Camp Zero on Thursday 14th January and set course to Waypoint 1 at 20:00 gametime Euro Zone / 02:00 gametime US Zone.

We'll spend the weekend out in the Fine Ring Sector. Its close enough to home for players to pop back to a station and repair, or refit, if they think their ship isn't up to the long long long journey ahead!

On Sunday 17th Jan, once you've had enough of Shapley 1, players can drift away and begin prepping for the trip across the Sagittarius Gap to the Lagoon Nebula 3,800 Lys away. The details to the WP2 rendezvous will be posted next weekend during our Shapley 1 visit.

For more detailed information on each Waypoint, and the distances between each POI on our journey, check the main DW thread (its all there under each map).

    Base Camp 'Zero' - Departure 14th Jan. 3302 (20:00 Gametime / 02:00 Gametime)

    Waypoint 1 'Laika's Rest' - Arrival 15th Jan. 3302 (from 19:00 Gametime / 01:00 Gametime) - Departure toward Lagoon Nebula begins Sunday evening 17th Jan. 3302

This works perfectly for me as I'm taking my boys on a boy scout camping trip on Friday. Thanks!
Death is just nature's way of telling you to watch your airspeed.

Sounds great Erimus! I won't be there though for two reasons:

    1. I've already left and am prospecting for good landable worlds for the fleet at the waypoints, as well as hunting any interesting features or sights
    2. I'm not certain I'm going to be home at the time of the departure

Either way, I'll be hooking up with the fleet along the way as you all catch up to me, and then I'll be keeping pace all the way to Beagle. This is going to be a very fun and interesting journey! Man I can't wait to get to Beagle with however many of us make it there on schedule...

We could do with a "Hunger games" boom when one of us falls by the wayside.

As I've volunteered for media services, I could definitely have a hand in that... Maybe a list at the end (when we make it to beagle Point or beyond) with the funeral bugles of various countries (of course being from the US, this is what I thoguht of at first but I could scroll the list slowly enough to add various countries funeral bugles) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wn_iz8z2AGw and cannons exploding in the background haha.
