The Buckyball Racing Club Presents: Total Recall (2nd - 17th April 3302)

*** DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND THE RACE DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED UNTIL APRIL 17TH ***

No secrets, no safety ratings ... this, ladies and gentlemen, is a race. One that I hope will test your skill in both the piloting of your chosen ship, and in the handling of your SRV.

This race starts from Schneider Relay in the Epsilon Indi system. From there you'll be required to visit the following planetary landing bases, in whatever order seems best to you, and to drive at least 5km across the surface of each of their planets, before finally returning back to the start.

    • Monge Keep : Toolfa / A 1
    • Cauchy Gateway : Zeessze / Gonzalez's Grave
    • Darboux Legacy : LHS 450 / Darke's Claim
    • Slade Base : Flousop / A 1

OK, I'm in, what do I do?

For now just register your intent to race by posting in this thread.

Oh, and maybe head on over to the start line and try landing on Mitterand Hollow while you wait. I won't spoil the surprise in case you haven't heard about this galactic wonder but suffice to say it's well worth a visit!

Once the race has started get your ship to Schneider Relay. Open the right-hand Status panel and take a screenshot that shows your current SRV distance travelled (you'll need to scroll to the bottom of the Statistics section to find this). When you're ready to go take another screenshot that clearly shows your start-time on the station clock, launch and fly to the first planetary base on your chosen route. Take a screenshot when you land (again showing the time), jump into your SRV, drive at least 5km away from the base and then recall your ship.

Take a screenshot showing your ship either descending or landed on the surface next to you.

n.b. there will might be a daily award for best recall screenshot!

Board your ship and then repeat the above process for each of the other three planetary bases. Finally fly back to Schneider Relay and take a screenshot showing your finish-time along with another screenshot of the status panel showing your new SRV distance travelled. This should be approx. 20Km (0.02Mm) more than your original distance but don't worry too much if it's not exact, it's just an extra verification of your run to support the set of screenshots.

    BEFORE

    AFTER

Email your set of screenshots (there should be 12 in total) to alec.turner@buckyballracing.org.uk (I'd prefer it if you could upload these to somewhere like imgur.com and then just send me a link to the album) along with the following information:

    • your commander name
    • your forum name (if different)
    • the type of your ship
    • the name of your ship
    • the total elapsed time from start-time to finish-time (this can be calculated by feeding the times shown on those two screenshots into the following website: http://www.timeanddate.com/date/timeduration.html#)

Submissions will be accepted from 00:00:00 (in-game time) on Saturday 2nd April 3302 until 23:59:59 on Sunday 17th April 3302.
You can make as many attempts as you like during this time.

    How long will it take?

It should take you around 45 minutes to complete this race.

So what's the back story? Why are we doing this and what does it have to do with Total Recall.

Well basically it's just an excuse for a bit of surf'n'turf Buckyball Racing. That said ... the Buckyball Racing Club has running costs (advertising, scoreboard maintenance, Bucky's pension fund, back-handers for local authorities to turn a blind eye, that kind of thing) and I've managed to secure a generous financial contribution from one of the largest manufacturers of SRV tyres in exchange for research data. You see it's come to their attention that SRVs don't leave any tracks! I know ... weird huh? Anyway, the wheels are in motion (wheels, in motion, ha ha! no? just me then) to correct this problem, but before they do that they want to gather loads of data about the way the existing tyres behave on a variety of different surfaces.

Tada! (and you guys thought I was just making this stuff up).

But you still haven't explained what that's go to do with Total Recall.
Don't tell us it's all just a lame pun on the fact that you have to recall your ship?

Errr, ummm, well I did originally consider making it an Asp only race that started from Mars High ... so I could say "get your Asp to Mars" but err, ummm ... oh look, it's ArnoCorps ...

    Yay, racing!

Boo, I'm on my way to Distant Worlds waypoint 23. Making it back in time may be ... tricky.

I'm back from holiday. CMDR Heat Shield will be available for racing Ship TBC.

CMDR Markzx59 is currently at Beagle Point in a Cobra mkIV trying not to think about the return journey...

Oh and how do you verify we've done 5km at each base or don't you? The 0.02Mm could be +/-9km. We could take a screenie with the base targeted after we recall our ship?

    Stating my intention to race.

I'll just say for the record it'll be easier to track the distance travelled in the SRV for me, as it's still in Km not Mm I was also wondering how you'd know how much was done in each system, you could save all the SRV running till the end or get it out the way at the start and just drive around in a big circle for 20Km Not as fun obviously and I doubt any regulars would bother.

Ah ha! That's the genius of Total Recall you see ... the game won't allow you to recall your ship until you're at least 5km away from the base. This is partly the reason for the ship landing screenshots since you wouldn't be able to take such a screenshot if you hadn't driven the prerequisite distance.

Nice one Alec, good luck with the race, I'm glad to see a hybrid flying / driving race, looking forward to seeing how it goes.

Sadly I'll definitely need to sit this one out, the raikobot is only cleared to control starships not SRVs, and CMDR Raiko hasn't even caught up with the DWE, because I've been ill. So I don't think that he'll be back before the end of the race.

    Fly dangerous CMDRs!

And going with another ArnoCorps' favourite, I can't be up for this one, but definitely sooner than later...https://youtu.be/3kS4mRgd2NA?t=44

Are you still looking for interesting bases?

First one is my personal racing track, actually, and the second one is not that interesting (except the building) but it's on a high hill, so, you know... fun.

Thanks Chris, those are both brilliant and I've picked up a couple of other suggestions over here ...

I think what I'm gonna do is run this race with the bases I've got and then, if people like the format, do another one (Total Recall 2) featuring all of these more hardcore bases.

Isn't it possible that racers will just find a flat piece of land and drive in a circle to get those 20km done?
