    Thargoid Poll One

    Relief - Listeri169

The pain was excruciating, the octagonal sores burned into everything and every thing he felt was crippling. Dragging himself from the cockpit to the medical bay slowly with every step wincing with pain. You could take so much, and in the frontier reaches of space, well there was nobody to help out here. crawling now into the medical bay, hitting the controls of the medical computer was a chore, lying on the bed face down biting into the pillow as the blood fell in pools. The ice cool cream providing some relief from the agony. Yes Tha-Roids sure were painful.

    Killer Queen - Scorpio

Sergeant Carstein inserted his last magazine into the Desert Eagle. He had never imagined them capable of such cunning: a assault squad concealed in the recently erected bouncy castle on C deck; The common room was occupied and access to Operations. Carstein had made a desperate retreat to the cleaning cupboard, employing the plump body of the janitor, Mrs Hoffman, as a makeshift barricade; occasionally her rheumy eyes would open and she would inquire after 11.00 tea-break. Beyond the cloud of anti-laser aerosol the juke-box played Killer Queen accompanied by frenzied Thargoid keening.

    Father to Son - Gavthomas

Tregor Stryder sighed as his Cobra slowed from fast travel and checked his scanner, what now... asteroids? Nothing. Bloody machine... not now....
The intercom screeched "Frack steeeak limbo!"
Where the hell.....? He knew they were all around him, like an oppressive, choking fog. It clicked. The Argent's Quest that left to find the Thargoids had a cloaking device, and now they had the upper hand once again.
Enough dark, lonely exploration, he had found the Holy Grail and the Thargoid War would continue. He sent out a final message, a tear rolling down his cheek: 'Thargoids. Cloaked. Reixica. Goodbye Son.'

    A Welcome Visit - Musashi

The soft sodium light that filtered through the semi-transparent glassteel wall was a perfect analogy of his life, thought Jeelon. It was utterly unchanging, day after mind-numbing day.

The background susurration outside, unnoticed till now, became loud enough to get him out of bed. Huge octagonal ships surrounded by darting escorts were descending from the sky. Dazzling beams lanced down on the cityscape, shattering buildings. A cacophony of sirens and human suffering began wailing into the night.

Jeelon stared, electrified. It was a Goddamned. Thargoid. Invasion.

The hardest part about this apocalypse, he mused, would be pretending he wasn't excited.

To Be Enraged by Dumb Brutes - Frank

The Boa successfully returned to normal space. The pilot was crestfallen.

Preparing for his next missjump attempt gave Joe time to think. “Fear glands removed. Pah! They just insects. They ain't got the brains to feel fear. They got hive mentality. They just swarm. Each of them as guilty fer killing my wife and kids. Each of them as innocent.

Getting angry at Thargoids like getting angry at wasps fer spoiling yer picnic.” He checked his Quirium level. He could only try one more time before refuelling.

His jump failed. Success! He was surrounded by angry aliens. Joe started swatting.

    Thargoid Mine - Cathy

The recent dogfight surfaced in Luna's emerging consciousness: the turbulent atmosphere; lightning; burning descent...

Alive at least, but no longer in her broken craft. What the..?

Wood crackled. There was hard rock at her back. There, on the other side of the campfire, the thargoid, chewing on a grub on a stick.

Calmly, Luna mused on her unlikely predicament. Why had it pulled her from the wreckage? It needed her for something? Not food, judging by the half-eaten grub.

She tested the resilient fibre that bound her wrists. It felt sticky.

"So, " she asked, "did you spin this yourself?"

    Trouble! - Phoenix_Dfire

The engine screamed as it was pushed beyond its limit, the rear shield flared angrily as the incoming fire peppered it. Mac threw the Sanctimonious into a desperate barrel-roll to avoid any more trouble.

“Are the co-ordinates set?” He yelled at Davie.

    “We’re running?” Davie replied.

“We’re in one Asp Explorer and what’s out there?”

“Two Thargoid mother ships and seven of those thaglets or thargon things.” Davie reported. “Oh! Nine now.”

    “You ever seen thargoids before?”

“Nope.” replied Davie, his face fell as read the scanner. “There are eleven now!”

    “You still want to stay?”

    “Hell No! Jump!”

    On the Edge - Darkoba

    Board computer: "INS maintenance overdue".
    Pilot: "Ignore. Initiate take-off".
    "Inadvisable".
    "Override. Comply".
    "Very well. Take-off sequence initiated".

The aging Sidewinder headed for open space. Prospecting close to the edge of human occupied space; one more iron asteroid and they could go home.

    "Prepare jump".
    "Inadvisable without INS maintenance"
    "Override".
    "Transferring power".

    They jumped.

A cloud of swarming ships at maximum scanner range! Thargoids!

    "Maximum thrust!".

They reached the station before the Thargoids could catch them.

Landing permission was automatically granted. They entered the welcoming docking bay.

The parking bay was almost filled - with hexagonal ships.

    "Oh ******"
    "Initialise INS maintenance?"

    Anorak - Darren Grey

Okay, yeah, I know it’s silly. Objectively speaking you’d have to be insane to do this. As a recreational activity it is logically stupid.

But oh, for that thrill when you glimpse those octagonal shapes in the darkness. When you see them storm a military outpost, their sickly green lasers firing mercilessly, before they hyperspace out en masse. Or that rare moment when you float into their midst, engines on silent and thermals sunk low, whilst a dozen spinning ships skim past in silence.

Yeah, so maybe it’ll kill me one day, but till then I’m a goid-spotter for life.

Thargoids: Lesson 1 - Caring for your pets - Bikky

    ‘click-click CRAARRKK.’ Said KZZRAKA
‘click KAZZARRK RAAK KAARRK RAAK click-click.’ Replied RAZKIR
‘KAR KARZRR ZZARRRK RAK KAZARK said ZAKAKAZZZ
    ‘KAR RAKAKAZAKKKIR click-click-click.’ Said KZZRAKA
‘click-click-click,’ there was a pregnant pause, ‘RAZZAKAKA, KAR RARRK RAKAZAKKAKA said RAZKIR
A man and a woman on a table looked up at the large mantis like creatures covered in a chitinous residue. One of which dribbled over the woman, who promptly screamed.
‘KARRAK RAKKA RAKK KAZRAZARRK!’ exclaimed KZZRAKA, then promptly wiped off the dribble with a cloth and threw it at RAZKIR. Carrying on he scooped some Ice Cream and offered it to the woman.

    Golden Rule - Musashi

Drexel studied the tiny form intently. Creepy-crawlies had fascinated and repelled him in equal measure since childhood, and the years had not diminished these feelings. With a deft movement of his tweezers, he plucked another limb off. Just two left! He loved this gradual imposition of stillness on the frantically wriggling chaos held between his fingers. The exercise of power, however petty, felt good.

A horribly loud clicking noise made him look up. Two huge, bristling...insects...confronted him, clearly agitated. They moved quickly, binding him tight.

Even before the Thargoids’ mandibles closed around his legs, Drexel began to scream.
    -------------------------------
    The Swarm - Listeri69

'THE CARGO!' screamed Eldus evading yet another ship the laser fire intense seemingly coming from all sides. It had been a dangerous mission and Eldus wasn't about to fail now. Forcing the ship into witchspace had been the start of it, getting on board the Thargoid ship even harder. What they found was priceless. Eggs, hundreds of them except now they were hatching overwhelming the ship from within.

'ELDUSsssssss' was the last thing his crewman shouted, thousands of Thargoids crawling like spiders over the ship, Eldus drew his last breath as the swarm overwhelmed him, screaming into the void.

Yup it was. And it's been over 20 years since I read any Pratchett so I've forgotten the lot.

btw, I was once on a scifi/fantasy quizz team with Terry Pratchett and would you know it one of the questions was about one of his Discworld books; and our team got the answer wrong!
