Post Galnet News on YouTube - opinons welcome

After reading a lot of threads about players not being aware of the story, I thought it might be nice if the news was available to everyone as a YouTube video. It also gives me the chance to focus on player-driven stories and special features that are not part of Galnet official, since the official feed seems to be limited to two stories per day and cannot be affected by player activity.

    Latest 5 vids:

    09 Jun 3301: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qA7i9zpwtxY
    07 Jun 3301: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuSosdAY0f8
    04 Jun 3301: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBTw_O1jh50
    31 May 3301: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Pg-XJeoD-g
    29 May 3301: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XKjvCO0PqA

It enables players to get the latest story updates without having to log into the game (perhaps you're travelling, or not on your gaming PC), and maybe draws in non-players who are looking to get into the game but aren't sure about this "story stuff".

Do leave your opinion and let me know what you think of the concept! I've tried to be clear this is not an official Frontier video in any way, but hopefully nobody in this thread will think that!

I'd watch it. Better than the current news feed that is rather limited.

This thing is great! However, there are two problems.

First one is personal. For news (and many other things) I prefer reading a text than hearing it spoken. For many reasons.

Second is maintenance. Are you doing this "manually"? Reading the text by yourself? So, once you get bored or don't have the time to do it, it's off. So, basically, it's unreliable.

However, getting this content outside the game is a BRILLIANT idea, almost a necessity. To be perfectlyhonest, I don't know why the Devs didn't do it themselves. Exactly for the reasons stated: sometimes you are away and want to catch up. But for another reason, too: advertising! If there is in-game side-content available outside the game, more people are likely to be drawn into the game and actually buy it! Furthermore, if there was a website with in-game news, it could publich articles not only made by Devs, but also pieces made by players. Put an editor in command to filter out stuff and you get an amazing new resource. Hell, one of the best things in FFE were the journals, why not put it on a whole new level?

    Fab idea!

All you need is a scrolling text, and I'm a follower

I seem to have some memory of things like this were supposed to being delivered by another (Frontier) site, possibly also available via a tablet.

Something for the iPad has been delivered but I'm still waiting for the Android version (any expected delivery date yet known?)

So here's the one for 19 Dec (today), with a bit more substance to it (and glorious 60 fps): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-G7IlP5X1I

Good feedback so far. I do appreciate some people would like to read text rather than watch a video, which is hopefully going to be possible for most people when, as WO-One mentioned, the Android version of the app is there to complement the iOS one. Although there is a Galnet section on the official Frontier site, it's not up to date, but it's http://www.elitedangerous.com/news/galnet/ for reference.

I did look at the idea of using scrolling text in a ticker, but a way of doing it in a simple fashion in my video software escaped me. I am a bit simple when it comes to video editing.

I also appreciate that if I stop doing these, they will no longer be there! It's fairly simple to put these together with the template I now have, and it might well be every few days instead of every day, if there even is going to be new stories on Galnet every day. In theory, with the template, anyone could make these. I'm not sure if Frontier would prefer to do this themselves, or let the community do it, but anything that gets more players invested in the ongoing stories has to be a good thing, I should hope.

Thanks for the feedback so far.

Added the one for 22nd December which includes all the news since 19th since I've been away.

I've also put the videos on their own channel on YouTube rather than using my own channel, so if you previously subscribed, you might want to subscribe to the dedicated channel instead.

The second is a problem...somebody else did similar but its now old news.
Seemed like a good idea at the time I guess, but in reality.. not so sure.

Yeah shame to see that one not updated. It seemed to pull news from the website rather than the game though, which isn't as complete in terms of news.

I'm not sure I subscribe to the "what if you don't keep it up?" as a criticism as such. You get something for free, you enjoy it, but it's not like you're putting masses of effort into watching it or subscribing to it with a term you can't get out of, so if it's not there any more, it's just the way it is, rather than you having lost something significant? Really positive feedback so far in any case, so I'll keep them up for the time being!

I presume the feed we get in game is the most minimal thing they could implement within release time, I'm sure if they get the time FD could do something similar to this but with news casters or something more elaborate than just a text feed.

Yeah TBH I'd be much happier if Frontier did it so that:

    - It had higher production values
    - It wasn't only available in the game

But if it was a choice between them spending their money on making more ships, more missions and more content, or making a news feed, I'd leave the news feed to the fans and take the content.

    Very nice.

What would be really cool is to bring a bunch of people together and do an entire newscast once a week that recaps all the news that has happened. You could have people play the various roles, so if there's a quote from Zemina then the news anchor's part ends and a different person does Zemina's voice like a real interview. People would reprise their roles from week to week and do different voices if they have multiple characters to record.

You could also throw in traffic reports from various systems that are popular at the time; reports on criminals in those areas and mention who has the top bounties; reports about market trends using the galactic average data; completely original reports that just add flavor to the galaxy as a whole; commercials for the various corporations or factions. Make a whole production of it.

That would be a ton of work though. You would need at least...20+ people involved, each with their own duties to fulfill for that week. And now a week seems like not nearly enough time. It could be pushed to biweekly, with some really dedicated fans.

This is great, I'm going to watch everyone you post. Very professional. I wish there was a new like podcast to listen to while I play, like a radio station.

It's actually still the 33rd century, as there was no year zero, other than that, pretty cool.
