1080p?... 4k?... nah think bigger!

Ive just managed to get 10 bloody 80 and now I already need 4k which by the time I get it out the box I should have bought 8k??

I think it gets to the stage where nobody can tell the difference, they are just paying for the number :)

It'll be good to see optimizations as well. I'm currently running the game at 1440p and keeping above 60 most times with hitches near rocky planets, but a few more AA options would be nice.

I could use Inspector with Nvidia, but not sure if that would screw with the game or not.

I'm getting about 80fps at 1080, but with an asteroid planet in SC it has a instant dip/freeze to 15 for a split second every so often.

Maybe now, but who knows where screen technology, VR etc will be in another 5 years or so. Could be sitting inside a screen bubble that completely surrounds you, then we can start complaining that 8k isn't enough... Okay, maybe not

I've only seen YouTube vids so far and it already looks stunning. Seems like a lot of people here are planning on playing this for years to come so its good that FD are thinking ahead and are not fixated on limiting to current technology.

If its a huge monitor or TV screen, i dont care if its 12k resolution. I care about pixel density.

Im sure Oculus will release a 4k model. But any larger than that its going to be redundant.

At the same time, i cant name any games that use all hi res textures without someone going into it and making a mod to do so. Elite is the same, you may be able to play it at 4k but the textures are essentially the same detail as 1080.

I run a 30" 2560x1600, which is great, but it's all going to look terribly archaic when the Oculus arrives!

Can't wait :)

There is a optimal viewing distance with each size and resolution.

The sharpness is contant. So with higher resolution you go bigger.

What this means.

We went from 30 degree to 60. 90 120

8K is this if you move to the wall that you see only the wall and then a TV that size.

Thus FHD 42"
Sub optimal

UHD 84"
Suboptimal

uHd 8K. 168"
Suboptimal.

Most people watch there FHD from to far so acualy 720p is more fitting 42" on 4 meter so 8K get interresting around 200" and beyond.

Imagine this.
In 480 je see a talkin face.
In 570i you see uper torso talkin.
In 720 p a halfling and a other close to.
1080p you see two detailed actors in decent part of the room.

4K you see two actor not so close in the contex of there suroundings.

8 K you see a bunch actors incontext of more panoramic view of the pace they are while still see detaild facial expression.

The problem with this is view distance is set. By us its 4 meter. Higher resolution optimale sizes get huge and expensive.

If you want take full advantige of 8K you must reararange your view distance to under 2 meters and still you got a very big 8 K screen.

Optimal view distance FHD is 3 x its hight.
Optimal UHD is it wide.
Optimal 8K is 1/2 wide
As a very crude aproximation.

Of course the source cam need to be a more wider angle FOV recording.

For UHD 4 K no interrest in below 84" unless its for 48" PC monitor.

Everyone gets very excited by the resolution of 4K screens or UHD as we prefer to call it in the trade now. But in many ways the increased resolution is the least interesting bit of the standard.

The increased dynamic range is probably more interesting...certainly for creative producers.

And then if we look at things like Object Audio (Dolby Atmos) which will come to the home...there are a lot more things to come that will enhance the immersiveness of games.

But watching vids on youtube means it looked awesome in 720 or 1080 or whatever it was. Its like watching a HD TV ad on a SD screen and saying HD looks awesome.

I wonder when we'll start seeing a move away from 8-bit colour in the general case. I know 8-bit is "good enough" for most people, but some of us that dream of more colours..... the day is coming.

Hi All,
I run it at 4k on a 65 TV. The comments are right in that if the texture maps are defined for 1080 only then you wont see an improvement in that when you go 4K as the textures look the same. But Its big advantage is the fine detail and edges in the geometry in the 3D objects that improves.
For example I can see much more details in objects that are much further away at 4K and tell what a ship is doing even when it is far away. I can resolve more geometry at a point where in lower resolutions it will just start to look like pixels. Now the Good UI in ED helps there but giving you the triangles to aid you, but i am talking in general.

Play ED at half your normal x/y resolution for about 10 mins then switch to your full res and you may appreciate it.

That is not to say that 1080p looks bad. ED looks great (it just looks sharper at 4K or even 8k i guess if you can get a card that will do that at 60fps 8k)

Having seen football filmed in UHD and played side-by-side with HD...the difference is stunning...you realise that 8-bit is not really good enough!!

That makes sense, having just looked at the colour gamut of the UHD standard, most of the extra range is in the greens. So fingers crossed for Wimbledon being shown in UHD in the future (instead of this football lark.......)
