Astronomy / Space 17,000 ly to our nearest of 36 intelligent neighbours

A new report considering the possibility / probability of intelligent life in our galaxy - most likely 36 civilisations with the nearest being 17,000 ly distant. An interesting take on things:

'...there are likely between four and 211 civilisations in the Milky Way today capable of communicating with others, with 36 the most likely figure. ...

...“They would be quite far away … 17,000 light years is our calculation for the closest one,”

I see we have a "Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy fan". One theory I've heard is that they start playing video games (or have virtual reality machines) and have no need to look into space because they can create the reality of space right where they live. Sound familiar?

They all looked here and couldn't find any intelligent life...
