News 2.3 Dev Update

My only question is will we have hair? Or will it just be various types of military cuts ranging from Chrome-Dome to Peach-Fuzz?

it is very, very sad, because the NPC crew (even in the form of a purely cosmetic) people expect nothing less than the opportunity to walk on their own feet. It seems a pity that you can not hear us.

Yeah, this bothers me too. I have no problem with the very large crewed ships being slightly more fast & agile than their un-crewed versions, but whole extra pips seems like too much to me!

Hold your horses. I read it more like we are getting "sub Pips" for the crew members to micromanage. But only time will tell.

So I can teleport to 60k LY out to my mate's ship to have some sightseeing, but I have to take passengers manually? :D
Logic FD, have you ever heard about it?

Imagine the cutter!even faster, stronger and with the ability to fire in any direction. Makes all other ships useless. I wonder if you could just teleport to the gunner position of a "friend" s ship and fire at a station.

Apparently the shaders can't deal with hair... Maybe you can grow it in time to land on a planet and feel the breeze :)
(Though how EVE manage it with the same general graphics drivers I don't know)

I'm all for Immersion, but I agree with the decision to teleport to another cmdrs ship. I mean we already have insta teleport when your ship's blown up. Once that happens the escape pod takes you to the station you last visited...well actually that's what I think it does. Now it can be that the cmdr who wants to join travels to your ship via something like an escape pod and also leaves. This way you have an explanation which doesn't require the use of telepresence or space magic and you don't have to ask the question, why do you have a body if you use telepresence.

Massively underwhelming. What happened to that old post?

Michael Brookes during a Reddit AMA,

Multicrew will allow a team of up to 4 players players to assume roles (Pilot, Gunner, Navigator and Engineer) aboard the same ship.
Multicrew will not include the ability to walk around your ship(s).

Helm – Pilot & Captain the ship and control fixed weapons - Nothing new here.
Fire control – Turret movements - Tick.
Tactical – Countermeasures, shields and sensors. -Not happening
Engineering – Power management, repairs. - Not even close.

It seems to me that what we've ended up with is a lazy, narrow-sighted attempt to keep the promise of multi-crew without realising it's full potential at all. This would only appeal to a very thin slice of combat-oriented players offering NOTHING to traders, explorers or just ships such as the Cobra III/vulture with no means of launching fighters and turrets. Do FD honestly think it's going to be fun for people to sit on a ship hitting wake scanners and KW scanners? No attempt seems to have been made to add features to make the most of this concept. Given the scope of people's imagination on this theme I would have hoped that FD could have picked up on some of it. Where are the interesting power management mini-games, detailed ship schematics or at the very least some kind of FTL-esque view screen?

This was a very anticipated feature and ultimately was supposed to help it win over the people in the Star Citizen camp. Unless big changes are made to multicrew this will remain a big disapointment for many Elite fans.

If FD handle the FPS (walking around on ships and stations) and atmospheric planet landings in this less manner I wouldn't be surprised if Star Citizen ends up robbing them of their player base entirely.

... But I think the Step itself is Positive.
Having 2 Fighter Pilots Aboard means that the Bigger Hangars that Larger Ships can Carry Finally have a Meaning.
And the remaining Crew being Able to use the Full Sensor Arrays. Also means that I can go on an Exploration Trip. And Approach Moons etc Scanning Several Objects at the same Time.
Having someone to Man Turrets will give Bigger Ships an Option to actually Deal with Chaff Spamming.

Can we? Can the SL Fighters have a Detailsed Suface Scanning device in its hold? If it is then there is an option.

I really Hope they will add the Ability to use SRVs on Multi Crew Ships so that one Player can use an SRV and the other can Follow with the Ship.
Moreover I hope the Duplicating also goes Exploration Data so it makes sense to use Multi Crew for Exploration.

Yes another thing that is a good idea, but no one confirmed yet that this will be possible. I am no friend of multiplying rewards by number of persons involved.
The objects holds a value that is to be shared amongst the involved. I am fine with a wing incentive. But better is to negociate a share between the crew.
The value will be divided as the contract has been made. That's consistent and haves sense.

Finally I hope that this is just the Start and not the End of this.
I hope we will See Larger Ships like Frigates and Destroyers in the Future. Which will actually give Players the Options to not only Participate as Magic Warp Crew. But to actually Dock on another Players Frigate.
Moreover I hope we will see more Options for Multi Crew on Bigger Ships.

The covette has been introduced with 'the biggest ship you can fly in Elite'. So even bigger ships were not in scope. If this changed, questionable because running out of pad space.
So I suppose at lest not before season 4.

Regards,
Miklos

Most of this looks really good. Only thing I would like to add is a concern of power creep development.

Adding new features to game play can naturally add more power creep to a game which then needs to be balanced. Adding more power creep intentionally with new features only deepens the divide and makes the balancing of those features exponentially harder. It's is a fine line to walk and can ruin a games potential fast!

This patch has natural power creep and added power creep and like the engineers is only adding to the divide between players, power, and accessibility. There is already enough of that to cause many concerns and complaints. I fear this development trend is only continuing down this line and harming the game overall.

Personally I think more development needs to go into the game as an experience and less into power creep development.

Cheers

Another observation? Am I correct in this?

So CMDR X is flying back to Jamesons in his exploration Asp...

One of our much valued gank squads, utilising the deep PvP mechanics/gameplay available, interdicts CMDR X to mindless destroy him for no reason - He's faced with say a 12 player gank squad in 4 engineered ships attacking him of course for some deep and meaningful ingame purpose/outcome.

Anyway, at the end of todays fun and meaningful lolz, the gank squad logs off and for 8 of the CMDRs involved, at the press of a button they don't even have to accept the already petty punishments the game imposes for their activities? ie: Now they face no penalties at all?
