My only thought (echoing some in here already) is that being able to jump into somebody's ship even though your far far away might well lead to early burnout for some.

If it's TOO easy to go check out Jacques, Sag a and Beagle Point within a week, it takes the excitement away and (most importantly) takes away that part of a players journey. Admittedly folks would only really be cheating themselves out of things, but might it be considered to have a 500ly or 1000ly range you must be within in order to jump in? This way people can still play together generally, but there's no risk of somebody seeing all there is to see within a month and giving up on the game.

I don't think so TBH - it doesn't cheapen your achievement; you still flew out there. Think of it as trying to show your friends some cool things and maybe encourage them to do long distance journeys themselves. They'll get to do some telepresence sightseeing, but they aren't getting any in game credit for doing it.

You're not cheating anyone, you're helping someone enjoy an aspect of the game that they might not have seriously considered before. Additionally more people might head out on long trips if they know they can still help friends in the bubble, or a friend can join them for a bit to play around in a fighter or (hopefully) SRV.

If you don't want your friends to share in your experiences, you don't have to allow them on to your ship.

Sorry if this has been asked, but will there be any way for a single player to move between the seats, like you can get into the Scarab's turret?

Would love to be able to, for example, hop into the gunner seat knowing full well I'm basically a sitting duck in the mean time.

Bummed there's not going to be a shield/defense role...I know that's probably not the most sought after position but it'd be cool to have a full crew of 4 people with differing roles.

I was expecting some kind of defensive role too. As in "aiming" or diverting the shield energy to a specific fraction of the ship's surface. Another missed opportunity.

Just an FYI for everyone, we won't be able to answer all the questions in the thread today, but there will be plenty of time in future to answer as many questions as possible...

...and there will be livestreams showing off the cool new stuff, too, of course!

Please do take a note of the issues raised here for answering in future updates and livestreams! :)

Helm, Gunner and Fighter Con Roles
The ship’s owner always takes the role of helm, piloting the vessel and operating fixed and gimballed weaponry. They also control NPC fighter pilots. There can be up to two additional crewmembers, depending on the vessel, who can perform roles to enhance the ability of the ship. Players can also simply come along for the ride, with the pilot in a mentoring role. The helm also retains control over distribution of power, navigation, and synthesis.

The gunner role allows a crewmember to take control of all turreted weapons on the ship. They do not need to jump between turret views though. Using a third person interface, they control a reticule that all turrets within their arc will automatically follow; giving them improved spatial awareness and easy control of all turreted weapons. They also have access to two “quick slot” fire buttons, in addition to normal fire groups, that they can customize with modules, allowing them more options for activating weapons and scanners.

Ok, good and bad.

Restricting the ship owner to the pilot role is a big mistake
. Swapping pilot and gunner roles is a huge part of the fun in Allegiance multicrew, and in Elite it would let commanders try the feel of their friends ships. Since the Engineering customisation and upgrade options make the ships more unique these days, it would be an extremely welcome feature. To me this decision speaks of a lack of ambition, and possibly lack of vision in the implementation.

Turret control. I expected a stabilised view from inside the ship, but so you can see through bulkheads (maybe utilising a 1984 Elite style vector view). Other than that the turret control sounds ok. Why not let the pilot decide who targets gimbaled weapons as well though? This seems like another missed opportunity.

Personal power distributor. Er... ok. It's a huge level of abstraction (as is the instant teleportation of course). I would have added functionality to whatever systems a dedicated operator is using. Longer range for scanners, more efficient power distribution to weapons etc, but I guess abstracting it all to "more power" is acceptable.

Does the ship re-buy (with reduced premiums) only apply to the ship owner, or are the crew members also responsible? What about re-arm and repair costs?

Oh look, someone complaining about having fun.... turn off the "ship is open for multicrew" and you're fine. You literally dont have to use it.

Must admit, i was a bit skeptical that multi-crew would be interesting for me, but it appears that it might.

Question! Will it work across modes? So, i'm playing in Mobius and send out a request to join a ship, and suddenly i'm teleported on board Rinzler's ship in the middle of PvP combat and i've got him screaming in my ear "Come on Agony, time for you to learn, its time to git gud!" :D

This is what I bought Elite for - multicrew with my girlfriend and friends! [heart]

My brother-in-law just got a big fat check and I'm helping him build a real computer. Multi-crew will be great for introducing him to Elite as trying to show someone the ropes via wings was too impersonal, imo.

Sounds very good so far. It is reminding me a lot of the old SWG Jump to Lightspeed add on and I loved that.

Will we be able to mine with friends, in your ship, helping you and sharing the profits?

Alternately, you're out at Beagle point and want to show a friend the sights, so you invite them to join you to show off your discoveries.

Turn that frown upside down my friend!

Another thought...do you have to petition to join a ship from being docked?

If me and a buddy are in a wing and he decides to crew on my ship, can they just swap right on? Or do they have to go dock somewhere first? If they can just hot swap, what happens to their ship?

Hey. No additional roles, other than those outlined in the post :)

See this is the biggest problem for me, it's yet another update dedicated to combat. How many are we going to have to go through before other parts of the game get a look in?

I didn't expect exploration to get an overhaul yet, as I've mentioned before I know that's a long, long, long way off, but here was an opportunity with multicrew to at least add some things in so people working together had a better chance of finding things. But no, once again it's being ignored. Still, enjoy the months of bile and hate coming from the people who say it's too powerful/weak.
