News 2.3 Dev Update

I can't believe people are already trying to ruin this over the instant travel thing. Guys, when we die, we are magically transported to the last station we docked with, regardless of distance! Maybe we all are just playing clones.

Anyway, thanks for the update FDev. Let's see how it goes

I couldn't care less about immersion in this case. I think the insta-join is necessary for gameplay - HOWEVER it inhibits two activities players could be able to run and expand the game outside of it - rescue and transportation of pilots.

For instance, consider two scenarios:
- I join by telepresense from a station for as long as I want. I will not be able to be transported and follow my way from there but I also do not risk too much and I can "beam" me to safety whenever I can. I make the fun out of helping my friends and then I get back.
- I join physically the other ship either on a dock or by boarding in a SRV, allowing me to be rescued from a planet after my ship has blown up; or allowing me to be transported inside a friends vessel. If I need to evacuate the ship, I can do that - I keep stranded in a stasis pod and call the Rescue Rats OR I can just kill myself like i normally would.

Imagine all the gameplay that could derive from that.

I have a really bad feeling and you can all rip me a new one lol. But I really hope that the game coming to play station isn't going to turn it into an arcade game? Just to keep ps players happy. That's my 2 cents.

Y'know, as time wears on I'm absolutely convinced that FDEV do treat this game like it's an arcade game.

And when you look at everything which has been done in the past two years - this increasingly becomes apparent.

So as someone who 2 years ago thought this was going to be more of a simulation, I have come to terms with this game by accepting that it is an arcade game with some simulation-like properties in it.

Once you accept this, you no longer get stressed by a lot of the things FDEV do to the game. And you stop caring. ;)

There has to be a certain level of leeway or the game will simply get nowhere. I say the insta teaming up is brilliant. We need to get more co-operation going and the only way to do that is the 'suspend ones belief. FTL, instant respawn iin a station after death, we already do this. Why not multi crew.

Really looking forward to this update. It'll make flying with friends so much more interesting and diverse. I'm sure people's doubts will be worked out in time with some patches and updates.

This is sounding great so far. I have to echo previous concerns about crew members not being able to take over the helm role of the ship, even if I have to jump through a list of permission based hoops I would like that feature to be there.

Also, I really hope you don't give in to people complaining about the teleportation aspect. I have multiple friends who are buying the game due to this update (they love the idea of elite, but hate flying vehicles in videogames) and if I have to constantly fly around the bubble to pick them up when they play that'd get really frustrating. At the very least, physical player pick-ups should wait until space legs are added. :)

Cheers.

Multicrew sounds interesting but I rarely play with others. Any chance we could get an NPC to fill the empty seat in the bigger ships? Merely cosmetic and only to add a little bit of immersion.

Good, more fun arcade stuff then please. That's EXACTLY what this game is and i love it like it.

I really don't think there needs to be a specific position for navigator, because 90% of the time it'd be boring and there'd be nothing to do.

If all you care about is combat maybe... Oh yeah, that's probably why Ed said there's no other roles.

... but horrible for immersion. I'm not for magic teleportation, I think both players should be at least on the same station before departure. Also, for combat, will we see a new meta with all turrets ships and 2 humans on boards? Looks like unbalanced for me. NPC crew should be released at the same time as multi human crew for balance.

It actually makes sense and it does not disrupt immersion imho - imagine you are watching another CMDRs stream on Twitch but in-game and with some extra-interactivity. The point here is that there should be a way to actually to take the risk and embark on another player's vessel.

Fascinating. One reason for not having a third view of the ship today (said by the developers) was just not give advantages observation in combat during the flight and will now give it to who controls the turrets.

My combat ranking is the lowest out of the three, Exploration is the highest. Like I said, if other crew members have access to the galaxy map and can plot routes, then there's literally no reason for a navigator role at all. I'd much rather them focus on other positions that have a bit more gameplay (like a shield guy, or for exploration, deployable scanning vessels that your crew can pilot to help you scan planets in a system faster).

All bounties and vouchers that the helmsman (ship owner) receives are duplicated for each crewmember, making multicrew a great way to have fun with friends without missing out on money-making opportunities.

Does this mean that I can boost my friend from sidewinder to millionaire in 17 Draconis?
All he has to do is log in to my ship...?
This is potentially a problem that will lead to "gold sellers"
Or am I missing something?

with a new, fully-fledged camera system, they’ll be able to view themselves and their crew in real time as they adventure across the galaxy.

Does this mean we are getting completely different ways to see our ships, crew, avatars and lovely paid for paintjobs?

Or is this new camera system simply updating/replacing the trusty old debug camera?
