News 2.3 Dev Update

My combat ranking is the lowest out of the three, Exploration is the highest. Like I said, if other crew members have access to the galaxy map and can plot routes, then there's literally no reason for a navigator role at all. I'd much rather them focus on other positions that have a bit more gameplay (like a shield guy, or for exploration, deployable scanning vessels that your crew can pilot to help you scan planets in a system faster).

Well, for a start, the navigator could look for interesting places on the surface for you to land at. Or they could decide which are the best planets to scan, or plot a route. Though obviously none of this could happen without an overhaul to exploration, so that's at least 6 months away but probably longer.

Ed said the only roles are the ones mentioned, so there seems very little likelyhood of anyone other than the pilot being able to access the map otherwise, apart from anything else, you could end up selecting different systems and not going where the pilot had intended.

Frontier please please please stick to your guns and makes sure you do NOT allow the im-mer-shun brigade force you to make time vampire changes like they forced you to do over Module and Ship transfer. For once say 'No this is something WE are going to do and that's FINAL!' Stick to your guns, keep it simple and fun and tell the Time Vampire Imershun Regiment to put up like the rest of us had to.

Rant over, back to normal programming.

Immersion was never the prime consideration for non-instant ship/module transfer. The primary problem with instant transfer is that it devalues the considerations about jump ranges, in other words, the interstellar travel speed. Transfer your AspX taxi to you, fly the AspX to the destination, transfer your Corvette there. Could even reduce FSD on big ships to, like, 2D, limiting to supercruise but with huge weight and power savings. That would imo be a very toxic and awkward meta that we gladly avoided.

I'm guessing having a multicrew ship is for Horizons owners only - will non-horizons owners at least be able to "crew up", or will they be restricted from MC altogether?

My guess is that this will be Horizons only. Though, I don't know for sure. I think it would be better overall if this was taken into 1.x as well...if only to increase the number of available crew/ships. It might even encourage people to buy horizons after they get to see the raw power of engineered weapons up close.

Question for Sandro.

I understand perhaps why no trading profits are shared (at least as far as is indicated). Would simply be too easy for one person to work while others sat AFK.

But what about piracy? Thats got a combat element and active roles for all flying on board, but no bounties or bonds possible. Is there any mechanic that would provide a credit incentive for pirates to wing up. If the only way to pay crewmates would be to afterwards meet up and drop cargo, its not going to be.... fun.

This! I as a pirate would even ditch any shared revenues
from sold stolen items, but would love to have the reputation
(requires criminal careers) shared. So wings become infame
in the game and thus achieve piracy ranking.

Also bounty payouts are duplicated?
What about fixing cargo bugs?

Why can't we have both physicial boarding AND telepresence as options? Rescuing/transporting players would be a major new comunity driven feature on par with the Fuel Rats.

because that requires... space legs... doh

Honestly I hope the unlimited teleportation doesn't get explained as telepresence. In fact this shouldn't be explained at all.

This. As someone who was and still is firmly opposed to instant module and ship transfer (due to balance and meta reasons mostly, immersion only secondarily), I can totally live with the multi-crew-teleportation for gameplay reasons, as long as this is kept strictly a gameplay thing and not made into lore in any form whatsoever. Sometimes no lore explanation is the best explanation.

To the people that like immersion crowd of the community: Please don't go haywire over the instant join feature, it is meant for fun so please don't let it get in the way of those that want it to be fun.

Ed's post on the formation of your crew literally says: "Fundamentally, Multicrew is about having fun with friends, so we want to make sure there are as few barriers to enjoying this feature as possible, starting with the crew formation process. We want to make it as easy as possible to start having fun on a multicrew ship."

If you want you can put up your own restrictions, please don't restrict it for all of us.

The insta-teleport-friend finder mechanic makes sense but also completely removes realism from the equation. I get it but I don't know how I feel about it. Do you at least have to be docked for a crew member to join?

I have to say...the idea of ahoying as a Pirates Mate sounds like a laugh, even better if there's a little extra to the mechanic.

This actually sounds like a fun update, and I'm all in favour of the telewavuim thingy.

Can Ram Tah give our crewmate, a scanner to detect potentially artificial structures within 50km?
More efficient jumps?
A scanner that can prospect content of asteroids without actually using limpets?

That would help a lot to professions that are not combat oriented.

Since multi crew will now work remotely without meeting up, does that mean you can just escape combat situations by joining a friend or, for instance, if you are in an active fight people can join you mid fight? I'm not a pvp player but I feel like this could cause some issues.

Setting up Multicrew

"Fundamentally, Multicrew is about having fun with friends,"

That's great apart for one small problem.. I don't have any friends.

At least non who play Elite. Ive encountered many cmdrs but briefly due to time zone issues Japan . Apparently Australia having connection issue right know . Some guy in US who was stoned most of the time.. Not found a stable wings group ie Cmdrs who have the same goals. In my experience just a rag tag 'group' enjoying getting away from it all with minimal human contact.

+1.

We are getting teleported 60kly away if we get destroyed afterall.
This is gameplay.

I'd be rather interested how instancing will work.
