News 2.3 Dev Update

Potential improvement to the external camera. A full 360 degree 3rd person-like camera if they decide to pass it on to everyone.

Other than that consider yourself lucky that you have no stake in what happens in Open. I think you'll be getting more visitors in Solo soon [yesnod]
Thrid person should only be able to be used for
1) screenshots
2) via a consol in game that removes control from you

The devs said no 3rd person , its not an arcade shooter

Yet another question .. (sorry if it's been addressed already) with the 360 view for turret operators, does this mean that underside turrets will be able to fire through the ship?

As in, will this mean that no matter where the turret is placed it can fire anywhere?

This part of the behaviour really needs a serious re-think I feel.

You're essentially outlining a system where crew can commit all the crimes they want on non-reward granting targets and then just walk away wiping the crimes with the only deterrent being they don't gain any of the credits they never gained in killing civilians/unwanted in the first place.

It simply doesn't work as a counter rule, and just sets up a grief-centric reward system.

I agree entirely. The crime system in ED, in my humble opinion, needs a massive overhaul and this change will only increase the problems.

Also the whole magical space unicorn transportation stuff really doesn't seem to fit into the existing rules of the game.... unless Frontier have plans to re-invent the entire premise of players in the Elite universe and make us some god-grade immortal EVE-clones that can just jump between bodies at will.

Otherwise, having people whisking themselves to the other side of the galaxy in the blink of an eye just to see the latest discovery of someone who actually took the time to travel, or to get involved in conflicts hundreds of thousands of light years away without any risk or investment is just going to be nothing but a negative influence on the game and bring the game closer to a market that frankly will get bored and stop playing a couple of week after each major update or popular reveal anyway no matter what you do.

I strongly disagree. I believe this kind of abstraction is exactly what the game needs: right now, ED has a lot of QoL issues. Another one is not the answer. To elaborate a little bit: games in general have to abstract to some measure. It's impossible to be entirely realistic and, honestly, a true to life simulation would be boring as hell. I was against the transfer time and I'm utterly against a pilot transfer time. A lot of activities in the game would take a lot of time IRL - like repair or outfitting - but their are instant, so why is module transfer not?

However, how do you balance it? Because instant everything is also boring. Clicker games are the bane of the industry right now and, frankly, balanced challenge is what makes gaming fun. IMO, this could be achieved by not allowing certain actions under some circumstances, period. For example, I was against module transfer time because I was against module transfer in any case. I was all up for module storage, however. It would be nice to pick up a bunch of stuff in discount systems and store it for later use.

So, in the case of multicrew, I have a similar instance: no pilot transfer time, because there should be no pilot transfer. Pilots should be able to board any ship in the same station/outpost/etc, but not teleport across the galaxy. "But my buddy is far away from me!": the one with the largest jump range can go pick him up. I doubt both are piloting sidewinders and, if they are, they're not likely very far apart.

..... Big Snip .... And with a new, fully-fledged camera system, they’ll be able to view themselves and their crew in real time as they adventure across the galaxy.

The only interesting feature of the whole blurb. Didn't care for multicrew when it was first announced and nothing said here has changed my view of it, just another feature I'll never use. CQC, PP and now MC - all DOA as far as I'm concerned.

That they did. But now apparently they've changed their minds with a turret mode view you'll be able to do a lot more than look around. You'll be able to fire guns, use scanners and lock on and fire missiles in a 360 degree arc. Won't that be lovely for combat balance?

Yes, this isn't just a game but a space sim. It currently gives a really good sense of being a cmdr in this galaxy but teleportation totally breaks verisimilitude.

It isn't even particularly desirable from a gameplay standpoint. Requiring cmdr to coordinate their actions to be in the same place at the right time is a core part of the current wings gameplay. Whereas this just allows you to summon help at will. You also can't do this with with your npc fighter pilots (if you happen to leave a station without activating them), so it introduces a further inconsistency.

I want emphasize again that the extra pip for each crew member is a dangerous idea. Selfishly speaking, if they get to set pip distributions like 0/4/4, I want that, too. And actually I can have it at all times: just buy two more accounts and invite your sockpuppet CMDRs onto your ship to idle there forever. I am certain this is not intended, but this is effectively a pay-to-win mechanic: pay real money for extra pips in your power distributor.

Agreed. Running more EDs on one PC is easy with virtual machines. FDEV please do not tempt me to use my second account for an extra pip.

Not to mention the implications for gold farming.
One could keep selling the sockpuppet accounts as they get rich and replace them with fresh ones.

FDEV pretty please do think long and hard about the exploit possibilities of the new features because your player base will be onto them with superluminal speed.

You can kick him from the ship as OP says.
You've missed my point. This is what people will do for their newbie friends, as a way to get them a bunch of money. Newbie friend won't have to work for it, just ride along with his experienced friend, and collect the bounties.

Some more questions/comments:

- how will players know a targeted ship is multi-crewed?

- does this use the wings system as previously mentioned?

- if we connect via telepresence how are are avatars explained? (which we are assuming we will see in the seats). Are they holograms?

- when the crew member is flying the SLF will we still see his avatar in the bridge?

- 3rd person interface on turret - I didn't quite understand this part of the OP - can anyone explain what this might look like and how it might work?

- comment: it would have been nice for solo players if we could switch between the roles (as Adam mentioned on the Horizons launch livestream) if only just to try them out (allowing the ship computer to handle basic auto-pilot just like now with SLFs) but it sounds like as the ship owner is always the helm then this isn't going to happen

What's consistent about having unlimited telepresence for you but 8 km for your fighter?
What's consistent about having myself in flesh and bone inside the srv and not sending my telepresence?

I'm sorry to say but we abandoned consistency a loooong time ago
-In the SRV we go in it , because its needed due to telepresence limitations (such as range)
-You have the same limit in telepresence as your fighters. I think its more like 20KM than 8 , but I cant remeber

My objection isn't to the instant commander transport, it's to the delay in ship and module transport. This whole community voted to have delays, which has made ship transfer much less useful than it could be. Yet here we are zipping commanders instantly across the galaxy, using unknown technology just for the sake of the game.

It's inconsistent, at best.

Either everything should be instant, or nothing should be. (ps I voted for instant ship transfer, just for the record).

I'd disagree. Ships and modules are physical items which can't be transported instantly. They have to be shipped via warp drives/jumps.

Since we have instant, faster-than-light communication though, along with robots/clones/drones, telepresence makes sense. Heck the only thing I find not consistent is not being able to transmit exploration data without docking, but even then I could make up that the data is locked in the scanner unit and I need to plug it into the station usb to access it, for, reasons.

Either way this is great for gameplay and being able to play with friends and have fun. I can go make that 10,000 ly trip at my own pace that may take a month, and still be able to play with friends Fri night. Whatever people need to do in their heads to justify the tech, just do it.

Now I can give the helm to NPC pilot and fly the Fighter.

Question: In 2.3, can I give the helm to NPC pilot and play with my turrets?

edit: even without NPC pilot I can jump into the Fighter, and the ship will fly itself. I wanna jump to the gunner seat when I'm alone also, thx.

Frankly this is a big let down.
As an explorer I'd hoped for at least a little bit of love from Frontier but it looks like we get nothing.
I can't share the Helm with my crew members to help pass the time on the way to Colonia ... and they probably won't be able to purchase a ship at Jaques once we get there. They could tag along with me for the entire trip but the can't stay at the destination. As soon as they leave the copilot's chair they get magically whisked away back to the bubble.
Having seats that only add content for combat pilots does absolutely nothing for me. I'm an Elite Explorer who hasn't even reached "Mostly Harmless" in combat.
Please Frontier ... try to give us explorers SOMETHING in relation to multicrew.

Fully and wholeheartedly agree +1
FDev busting their butts producing content quite a few players don't want/require/need, as intimated by the luke-warm reaction here.
If you are going to get good mileage from it, then good for you. I envy the expansion of your game. My game has been stagnant for quite a while now.
