I have to say, I don't think I've ever been this disappointed with update news before.
Practically everything I've dreamed of doing with multicrew—long range group expeditions, stranded SRV rescues, basically anything with any substance whatsoever—none of it is possible with this.
They're doing exactly what I feared they would: shallow, instant transport for nothing more than a quick little boost in combat.
Sad.
This is pretty much exactly how I feel. While I'd never say any game development is easy or cheap.
This is the easy and cheap way of doing this, I'm utterly astounded (probably shouldn't be anymore) that this is how it's being done.
Firstly, they just cut out one of the roles entirely, another of the roles is doing nothing, except flying a fighter ship (what is the point in this? just bring an eagle and wing up....) oh right, you get to play with a single magical pip, ok, I forgot, that totally makes it a worthwhile role.
Secondly, lore got thrown out the window.
With wings, we meet up with each other in our ships.
Then we fly together.
No one really complains you can't teleport your ship to your friends to play in wings.
So just make it so you can use a shuttle or pod or something to move from ship to ship, re use the limpets which already leave and enter the cargo hatch and have all the animation stuff sorted, hell, re-use the damn graphics if it would be that huge a deal to make a new pod asset.
Then it functions the same way wings do. No magic teleporting.
At this point, the lore may as well be that no one pilots a ship, everyone is in a bunker/station somewhere using teleporesence to pilot their ship.
And at that point, we should be able to hack into other ships and take them over remotely.
What happens when we can get out of out ship (I honestly doubt this will ever happen now) ?
Can telepresenced crew leave the ship too? walk around with us?
This is just breaking future design and gameplay possbilities, or making everything into some hideous magic fantasy instead of the sci-fi setting it's always been.
Screw that.
