News 2.3 Dev Update

There is no need for FDev to spend any time or thought on letting sight seers instantly unicorn magic across the galaxy to look at SagA in glorious 1080p. Steam already does that Josephine ;)
So then what do you have against instant transfer for multi-crew?

There are a bunch of arguments against telepresence/teleportation/insta-x in this threadnough, like balancing and immersion issues. But the only argument for it seems to be "instant action with friends". Are there any others?

Seems like a winning argument really.

This... Is about the only thing I dislike about Elite: Dangerous and it's not the game.

I was really hoping Sandro might have learned something from this experience?

I really hope Sandro is reading this whole, entire thread in detail, Ed said he would:

Good questions... I know that Sandy will be reading this thread a lot so he's sure to see them. We've got a livestream coming up in a couple of weeks, I'm sure there will be plenty of opportunity to answer as many questions as possible :)

But yeah - it's telepresence!

Sandro, I would so love to be able to help you come up with a solution to this kind of behaviour. You're welcome to get in touch of course, maybe I can? If I could separate my main CMDR's rep from the consequences it might be fun to RP a pirate, but not like this. You killed it and took it's cargo already, pretend it's dead for a bit.

Is there any possible way to make a CMDR invisible to the CMDR that just killed them, if only to simulate their escape pod ride home for 24 hours? Not going to work for those who want to /pvp, die, respawn of course but is it not obvious why some players won't come out of SOLO to suffer this kind of humiliation, multiple times?

You took that live-stream beating quite well, not everyone has your patience ;)

Yes, but you haven't made an argument against instant transfer.

Yes I have, see if your insta unicorn teleport can help you find it in the last 127 pages ;)

Edit: #1803 You might notice I had a go at some logic supporting it, to please everyone.

Why didn't they start with space legs? Could have been a better start and preventing the fuzz about teleportation/-presence.

It's less efficient to program that way around is my guess. From the player experience your avatar, is your game's central point. But from a program point of view it's a galaxy that you (and many people) move around, in. I think the idea is that walking about is OK for a few minutes, but eventually you'll want to interact with something. By developing P2P and P2E interactions first, your walking avatar slots into an already 'touchable' environment.

This looks like a great way to spend an evening's limited playtime. Maybe this is when they realised some actual crime and punishment might be a thing?

There's that other game that started with legs. Didn't work out too well for them.

You mean the poorly funded one? Never tried it. It looks nice in videos but to heavy focus on combat though. Not much else to do from what I've seen.
But it would be awesome to walk around in my annie, explore the cargo bay and the lower decks. Get that space suit and float over to a friends ship. I want to feel like a major tom or Malcolm Reynolds, not like some dude welded to a space ship.

The trouble with this and Elite is how much of the time during FireFly was Malcolm actually piloting the ship?

Care to throw out a percentage?

I'd say over 95% of that series is out of the seat and in chatty adventure game territory. Wouldn't that make it an entirely different game, by at least 95%?

That's why we need (NPC) multi-crew. I don't want to be at the helm all the time. Ok i can fly a SLF now, while my NPC is crashing my ship into a rock but for me that's not enough, i'd like to be the gunner or just an observer in a back seat.
But multi-crew has to be plausible and at least a little bit immersive. Imagine Han Solo an Luke plopping out of nowhere into the Falcons turret control stations. That's a movie i want to watch twice.

/sarcasmoff

Fines are unlikely to dissuade players with enough cash to cover multiple Vette rebuys at ~30 mil each but I hear ya. I'm sitting in a CG station wondering if it's worth dipping my toe in OPEN for the first time in 2600 hours. Do I want to sacrifice my Cobra, or get the much cheaper to rebuy Viper first, or just forget the idea and do something else?

Something has gone a bit off the rails, kinda like the real world now I think of it, when a faction of extremely hostile psychopaths has focused all their efforts on cheating up more money than god because all the legit money making avenues have been nerfed to stop above mentioned faction... Leaving others with no way to catch up or compete.

Recently the missions seem to have been boosted a little and I've been pleasantly surprised with my return on investment. The ruins mission can be quite lucrative if you're prepared to collect the same data multiple times. I can see FDev trying to level the playing field and patch the loop holes but is there a better way to stop people looking for them?

Any prolonged, repetitive activity is work, including cheating with exploits so I'm not actually devaluing the amount of time and effort some have more successfully devoted to the game in terms of cash rewards. But guys, do you really have to chase people across the galaxy, kill them multiple times and totally bum their game so they'll swear at you?

Do these people not get that they're shooting themselves in the foot and nobody will want to play with them if they behave like that? We know you have wake scanners, and interdictors, the tools are there to make someone regret logging in but is that smart? Do you really have to kill the same target over and over and over until they log back out?

If you bother to RP at all, take the four tons of cargo that FDL will carry and go away!

If players are able to ditch punishments, I can see players logging into open ships, firing on stations via the gunner role and then logging out as a method of trolling. To counter this the helm could have some form of lockdown feature on the weapons (possibly stowing?) that will stop the gunner firing.
And will the helm role still be able to fly a fighter with the NPC taking control of the helm as is currently available. I ask because flying the fighter is more fun than flying an anaconda, and it would be really nice if a friend and I can both fly a fighter and the mothership can be used as a backup we can rely on to end fights quickly and tank damage that fighters can't, this is pretty much already how I bounty hunt in my anaconda.

frontiers team isnt given enough resources and creativity to add depth, lord braben sets the development roadmap, the dev team are told to keep it very shallow but pump new mechanics out quickly for each patch of the season, and also told that they will be developing the same limited content but with lots of different shallow mechanics to sell as many copies as they can also for xbox and ps4. And this is where we are at, lots of shiny mechanics and technically impressive but shallow engineering outcomes.......

They need a content team to add depth but havent cottoned on yet this is what sells copies, and also sold millions of copoies or no mans sky (which didnt live up to the hype) but frontier already has the existing mechanics that could be deepened by a lot but arent

One thing i personally would request about the multi-crew is not to let people drop in and out at any distance, period. I would suggest that the ships at least be landed in a station, base/outpost/regular station. Cuts back on abuses of "Hey guys im being interdicted, tele to my ship pls"
