2019: No Mediums Please

I can't remember the last time we had a small ship added to the game.....actually, wasn't it the Viper MkIV?

2018 has been a medium-sized year for ship releases:

Krait MKII
Krait Phantom
Mamba
Chieftain
Crusader
Challenger

With all these mediums flying out the door, its ironic that were still waiting for a medium-sized Imperial ship. [weird]

In fact, the last non-medium ship released was the T10 for 2.4, back when Winter was Coming.

Enough mediums please, FD. Time for more small and large ship hardware (or even super large while you're at it).

I was one of the people loudly saying we need more medium ships, because frankly we did. But I agree that the medium lineup is (aside from the Empire) in a pretty good place right now.

I think the next ships should be a combat focused Imperial medium, an Alliance large that's not a rush job (no offense to the T-10), and maybe some multi-hardpoint miners, and then start working on the next "class" up - either Large Pad ships a full power tier above the current top-end, or ships too big to fit on a large pad.

The small ship lineup seems to be in a good place, and has been for a while. (although I'm not opposed to new for newness sake)

Yes, Imperial medium please! Then I have no preference either way.

Given the trend for ship size inflation, I expect the Gecko released with 4.2 to be in the 400T cargo class, and the Boa to shift a couple thousand tonnes...

No point in adding more small ships if we don't get small-ship-only gameplay: outposts and bases with small pads only, where there are unique commodities or mission rewards that are needed for tech broker unlocks; or perhaps specialist scanners that only work on small ships. Feel free to add your own suggestions.

I'd love to have a role for my Cobra, but frankly there's currently nothing it can do that a medium ship can't do better. Any new small ship would be in the same position - abandoned as soon as a player has enough assets to buy a medium.

I agree with TheSisko, but just one more medium, an Imperial one.
What I'd like to see is a Large Alliance ship like the Cutter or Vette.

As in a Bell Curve, don't you expect for there to be more Medium (in the middle) sized ships, than those on either extreme? I do.

Personally I could do without any large ships, new or otherwise. Medium ships do it all. But I do expect there to be more Large ship offerings as we go forward.

It seems the concensus is for more big ships but I would prefer going the other way - and a warning, this is a little 'outside the box' thinking.

With every Commander and his Dog wanting to fly the big ships and become slow moving battleships in space, I feel there is a need for a counter, a small, highly manouvreable small ship that packs a punch but needs a good pilot to achieve it. Taking the A-10 concept (take your biggest weapon and put wings and an engine on it), I would like to see a small ship built around a Class 4 FIXED weapon mount.

Overpowered you all cry, but the power of the weapon can be negated by only allowing at best average shielding. Give it good speed (not quite FdL/Mamba/Courier speed but fast, around 550 on boost), only enough internals to fit a shield (so no hull/module/shield tanking), no space for cargo because it's aim isn't to carry anything except the weapon. Give it just enough power to be useful, average jump range of 20ly (after modding the FSD) and a small fuel tank so you can only do maybe 3 or 4 jumps. Enough to get you somewhere but not enough to convince you to take it exploring. Make the price cheapish so transporting the ship is a viable option.

The idea is that you now have a ship that can take on anything, if YOU have the skill. But you will always have to remember that this ship has a crappy shield so you can't to toe to toe with a large ship, you must use your brains and skill to use the ship properly.

I too would like to see more large ships as they are my favourite to fly in the game. However, the current ones we have are of limited usefulness in many situations because the game seems to be highly optimized around the Python. In particular the missions system badly breaks once you go past the Python. I really wish Frontier would add 600-700t solo haulage missions, I can't for the life of me understand why these are still not in the game. Why did I work so hard to get a Cutter again?

Honestly, I'd like to see more ships that aren't particularly practical for players to fly, but would have a reason to exist in the universe, just for the sake of having them exist and appear entering and leaving stations and hanging around at nav beacons and signal sources and so on.

FE2 had things like this in the Interplanetary Shuttle and the Lifter. There was very little reason you'd ever want to trade down from even your starting eagle to fly one, but they were there and they existed and they added flavour to the universe. Likewise, there's a solid reason for ships to exist in the gap between ship-launched short-range fighters and full hyperspace-capable craft. Again, the kestrel and hawk airfighters in FE2 had these niches covered - extremely fast fighters, stripped down to the bone. Imagine an in-system craft with an undersized FSD only capable of supercruise, not ever intended to high-wake, allowing it to save weight and space that would normally be allocated to a FSD and fuel - and have these show up in conflict zones instead of the "ship-launched" fighters we see with no ship to launch from that apparently arrive by dropping in from SC.

Even if we can't fly them (and I'm sure there are plenty of folks that would anyway) it'd be nice to see them flying around.

I still want a medium sized Guardian hybrid ship. I thought the Krait Phantom would be that ship because of the strange engine trails, but it seems it wasn't.
Apart from that I am not sure if we need any new ships at all... I mean, there will always be new ships because people want new ships, but I can't really think of one concept that's not already in the game, apart from the design.
