2019: No Mediums Please

No point in adding more small ships if we don't get small-ship-only gameplay: outposts and bases with small pads only, where there are unique commodities or mission rewards that are needed for tech broker unlocks; or perhaps specialist scanners that only work on small ships. Feel free to add your own suggestions.

I'd love to have a role for my Cobra, but frankly there's currently nothing it can do that a medium ship can't do better. Any new small ship would be in the same position - abandoned as soon as a player has enough assets to buy a medium.

You're right, we need gameplay for small ships. When I started playing this game, I upgraded to a T6 from a small Cobra MKIII for trading ASAP. I've got a couple of MKIII now but rarely use them.

Maybe some of those tunnels within installations could only allow small ships to enter, to get loot or cargo of some-sort? Or maybe have some unauthorized bases built into the sides of mountains, with the entry point being small-only.

yes, the mamba should have been a small ship. a little smaller than the viper.
stop opening old wounds :'(

As an Imperial Explorer fan, I've accepted my wounds will be with me, always.

Still wanna see a small ship with a huge hardpoint.
Just a plasma accelerator with rockets strapped to it.

I did jokingly suggest a while ago a Federal Flea ship, she'd be small and have bite in the form of a huge hardpoint. Since then I've thought FD should actually do it. There barely would be room for a cup-holder, every spare inch (and mega-watt of power reserves) would be given to the hard point. It would it like sitting on a huge PA. Thermal underwear not included.

Almost anything that a small ship can do, a medium can do better (the only exception I can think of being three specific small ships, that are very fast). And there is nothing that requires a small ship. Therefore, small ships are stuck as either stepping stones or "I fly this because I like what it looks / feels like".

I thought this was an anti-psychic thread...

An ex-girlfriend had a friend who claimed to be a medium and could tell the future. When a long-planned visit of hers was cancelled suddenly, I couldn't resist asking if it was "due to unforseen circumstances". That got me a very frosty look :)

There is one thing a small ship ought to be able to do better than a medium ship: get carried / deployed by a large ship.

Absolutely :D
I'd love to be able to use the Anaconda to explsore but have a Sidewinder on hand to use as a drop ship for planetary recon. Leave the Annie in orbit and nip around in canyons or set down in the Sidey..
Perhaps also use it for shipping cargo to outposts - station yourself outside and ship commodities over bit at a time, we have the mechanics for that now in the mission board!
I'm not sure a small pad would fit on an Annie but could we have an extra-small pad that fits the Sidey and perhaps one or two other ship types.
If something could be done with small ship gameplay then a win too, not quite sure what that would be but still.. I do note that with the dropship example some of the Guardian sites are tough to visit in a large ship, having a smaller deployable craft that can more easily land would be really handy in those cases.
Basically improve the utility of the small ships beyond them being fun and relatively expendable.

At the top end add an extra large ship class that can't typically dock at stations and has to use ferries and/or add special non-rotational docking ports to some stations..

Isn't that what the Type 10 - Defender is meant to be?

The Cutter and Corvette are the most expensive ships in ED, the Type 10 is cheaper even than the Anaconda.
An Alliance Large ship should be more expensive then the Cutter or Vette imho because there's no rank you have to reach before being able to buy it.

I can't remember the last time we had a small ship added to the game.....actually, wasn't it the Viper MkIV?

2018 has been a medium-sized year for ship releases:

Krait MKII
Krait Phantom
Mamba
Chieftain
Crusader
Challenger

With all these mediums flying out the door, its ironic that were still waiting for a medium-sized Imperial ship. [weird]

In fact, the last non-medium ship released was the T10 for 2.4, back when Winter was Coming.

Enough mediums please, FD. Time for more small and large ship hardware (or even super large while you're at it).

Sorry. Thought you were going to suggest that people stop guessing what FD are going to and wait for either comment or content from them.

My bad.

😜

I need the Panther Clipper first and foremost.

Then I need small ship only gameplay. Small pads to the settlements maybe ?

And then I still don't really need new small ships. We have 14 small ships and 15 medium ships. Maybe a small freighter ? The Hauler as only small pure cargo ship is pretty outclassed by a lot of ships, with Dolphin and Cobra IV almost in T6 territory. T6 needing a capacity buff maybe ? Possibly putting it slightly above the AspE ?

Disclaimer: I used *I* for most of the post not because I'm selfcentered, but to indicate that this is my personal opinion only, not everyones, very unlike those who like to use *we* and are really the most selfcentered people.

Wanted: large ship. Three huge hard points and 5 large.. Internals for shields and military internals. Call it the constrictor if you like.. Zero cargo space.. Me want...

There is no small ship with 8 internals (only the limited Cobra iV), it would be really awesome for exploring and having a multirole small vessel. Also no other ship like the Vulture, meaning a small ship that, if flown well, can do combat as well as the biggest ones. As the game stands right now, these are the biggest gameplay areas i can think of where a new small ship would be more than welcome!

For many pilots, the experience and skill involved of learning to successfully fly a small vessel is so enjoyable that it overcomes the obvious efficiency penalty of the small capacity. Also for many things, bgs, rich players, ship size is many times irrelevant, fun is found in other areas of the game.

I don't see the empire releasing a medium sized ship - no point in something middle of the road.

Although:
An overengineered superiority fighter that should be a small ship but has nacelles that are to wide for the small docking bay. It will be fast, but not as agile as other small ships, with too little optional space compared to other medium ships. As usual, the shield emitters are rather good (for a small ship) but the heat dissipation is not.

I think the first (FTL-capable) Guardian-hybrid ship will be a small one.

I'm not going to object if FD adds more small ships, but I want progression - so prefer focus on large. As OP said, we've had a good run of new mediums. Please add Large, preferably something that is on completely different side track to Big3 current, or an entirely new SuperBig-1 class.

Unless the entire purpose of ship progression is broken, there's no point to staying in small ships other than for beginners, and I'd say there are enough variety of small ships for new commanders to feel like they have choices as they progress. Now if you made a small ship able to take down big ships easily, then you'd have a new meta.

And, yes there are commanders who will say they can take down an Anaconda in a sidewinder - this is quite true. But don't pretend this is the mean, or median expectation of avg commander. That's an exception scenario. All I'm saying is more small ships would just be a transitory ship stop along progression and I would prefer more end game content be added.
