2019: No Mediums Please

I need the Panther Clipper first and foremost.

Then I need small ship only gameplay. Small pads to the settlements maybe ?

And then I still don't really need new small ships. We have 14 small ships and 15 medium ships. Maybe a small freighter ? The Hauler as only small pure cargo ship is pretty outclassed by a lot of ships, with Dolphin and Cobra IV almost in T6 territory. T6 needing a capacity buff maybe ? Possibly putting it slightly above the AspE ?

Disclaimer: I used *I* for most of the post not because I'm selfcentered, but to indicate that this is my personal opinion only, not everyones, very unlike those who like to use *we* and are really the most selfcentered people.

If small pad only gameplay were to become a thing the solution to the T6 issue is either reduce it's height or increase the height of the pad by the half metre or so to make the T6 a small pad ship.

As in a Bell Curve, don't you expect for there to be more Medium (in the middle) sized ships, than those on either extreme? I do.
.
Bell Curve only makes sense as long as you think that ship development is random. So indeed, if ship designers wake up after a long night of booze and roll some dices to determine which size of ship to build, a bell curve can be expected. (Although not if they roll a single dice. )
.
As soon as there's some marketing guys involved, figuring out that many more people can afford small ships than medium ships and really few can afford big ships, the market has many small ships available.
.
Maybe some of those tunnels within installations could only allow small ships to enter, to get loot or cargo of some-sort? Or maybe have some unauthorized bases built into the sides of mountains, with the entry point being small-only.
.
There was some time, when this would've been really great. By now, it wouldn't do much any more. I mean, why bring a small ship, if you can bring a huge one and do the stuff inside a bases tunnel with a SLF?
.
Now I'm more of an XXLarge ... :(
.
Same here. At least once a while, for a few minutes... :D

I do think that if they introduce bigger-than-large ships (which I would like), they should have new gameplay associated with them. For examples, ships big enough to have a small landing pad on them, which could be their main method for interacting with orbital stations, or something like that. Have combat between ships of that size be a mostly long-ranged affair, where maneuver fights are replaced with detection/sensor jamming/point defense fights. Smaller ships could use ECM, chaff, or thermal control to get in close and at the range where their agility hopelessly outclasses the big guys, and they have to rely on turrets or fighters. (also make some C4 weapons that work like that, and let things like missiles and torpedoes also work at those ranges, so there's a bit of line blurring)

If such "huge" ships are just "like an Anaconda, but bigger!" it'll be a wasted opportunity.

I'd be fine with a big ship so big it can't dock anywhere. Let us dock a small or med ship into the big+ ship, and resupply the big+ by umbillical to a station, while using smaller ship to actually land there.

While I agree that it's time that other ship sizes get some love, I'm still somewhat annoyed by the complete lack of competition for the Python in the high-end medium multirole and would like to see some rivals added eventually. An Empire medium ship would also be pretty nice to see.

Small ships are already pretty numerous in the game, with there being 14 of them compared to the 15 mediums (including the Mamba), so they already benefit from a large variety. The only extra variety I'd say that they need is a touch more faction-specific ships and variants, particularly some Federal and Alliance fighters (Empire already have the iEagle and the iCourier).

Large ships could do with some extra variety, as they are by far the least numerous of the of ship sizes. In particular, the Cutter needs some competition at the top end as it is basically the best at everything except exploration. It would also be nice to see some more ships like the iClipper, Orca and T7 that offer good cost efficiency and "big ship on a budget" gameplay.

Somebody in this thread said small ships are dead... come on over to LHS 317 and we show you how dead a swarm of Vultures really is :D

On a more serious note, it's not about the size of the new ships, it's more about balancing them against the older stuff.
As it stands, most medium ships we got recently have become so "noob-friendly" that you can have a Krait with almost 4k armor, incredible shields, Chieftains, Challengers with massive amount of hullpoints so almost no skill needed for 1v1 PvP let alone PvE...
The real issue is that FDev has no clue how to balance the gear they drop into the live build.
Best example is the Mamba that has become a weak copy of the FDL due to people crying because of the heat issues and lack of understanding how to fly it properly...

Following the FD recent trend of re-sizing/re-classing ships, and to balance things out a bit... the Panther Clipper, to be released in Q2 2019, will herald a new breed of SLFs with rear mounted turrets and landing skids.

...with a dartboard paintjob on its back... the medium ships would love it :)

What if it gets rear hardpoints that love you right back ? That is something venerable Wing Commander got right already: No sitting on the six of the heavier fighters or bombers pecking them to death. Rear turret says no, find another way.

Okay, np, such a huge target is impossible to miss. Prepare for constant TLB, dispersal, dazzle... :)

Yes I agree here. In particular, the Python has no peer doing highly valuable haulage missions to outposts, which are often the highest paying. And in general, non-wing haulage missions max out in the Python range of around 180-200t. The Python needs competitions and the missions system needs to scale up to the bigger ships.
