Sony have basically comfirmed there will be a PS5 launch in the second half of 2020. ED next major 'update' will be the second half of 2020. It would be commercial self-harm to not focus on ensuring the 2020 update is poised to launch on next gen consoles, although they could launch on next and current gen simultaneously. My question is - how would this work? It would be an upgrade on current gen but a complete new release on next gen? Anyone got insight on how this could be implemented?

'Beyond' might be the last update for the PS4 and Xbox 1,as the 'New Era' update might required much powerful systems like the PS5 and Xbox Two.

So the question should be would fdev shut the game down on ps4/xbox1 players just cause of an upgrade of hardware, doubt that will go over very well!

Probably do what they do already with the base game and Horizons. PS4/Xbox1 keep playing up to Beyond and you will need PS5/Xbox2 for next big update.

I'd hope that, as with the performance 'curve' (low-high end) on PC that the game would scale along with the hardware it is played on, it would be a shame to see earlier generation consoles going the same way as Apple users just because of an update.

(or is the PS5 no longer copmpatible with previous generations?)

IIRC they dropped support for 32bit, DirectX9 (or 11?) and Mac so it's not entirely unlikely. PS4 and Xbox have way more players than that though. Personally I believe they will continue to support the current generation but without all updates, for some time at least.

While lowest supported min spec PCs are worse than consoles, and I say this as a console player, they really should cut off the current gen to let the game expand, then raise min specs.

One possibility is the 2020 game is "Elite Dangerous 2", which gives an easy out to drop support, and force players to pay full price for the new stuff (sorry LEPers).
But given the blow back, it may just be better if 2020 is an update/DLC, which current gen consoles cant get.

Some companies are already saying "buy the PS4 version, get PS5 for free later", so it depends on how FDev decides to handle things, but that would stop people buying twice (bad for shareholders, good for players).

Ideally with cross-play trickling in, they align console accounts to Frontier accounts, so you can log in and play on any hardware platform you like, with a single account.

Who knows really, and it's in the future, so the monetisation landscape may change by the time we get there anyway.

I heard somewhere that the ps5 is going to be 8k resolution! Wonder what that's going to be running under the hood! Pretty amazing if that's really true.

And it's a lot easier to convert to consoles now as both Microsoft and Sony changed chipsets so you can use a lot of code that you'd use in the PC version (i.e. no need for complete rewrite). Neither company is likely to change that back, as they'd just stab themselves in the back...
