On this forum there's a bit more love for subspecies/clones than any other platform.

Also depends to what extend. Another penguin/otter species would be considered a (resized) clone by some and a lot of people have commented on why another canine species for PZ, when the Dhole was announced.
The Emu is pretty popular on this forum and don't think that choice would sit well with the general player base: Another similar big ground bird. (for some also a clone)
For some the White Rhino would be another clone of the Indian one.

I'm fine with some clones, as long as they got different requirements. No point of having 4 subspecies with the exact same requirement needs.
I think the main problem is still that people don't really have a idea of what a subspecies is. I've never heard of somebody complaining about the fact we have a leopard and a lion in game, which genetically are much closer than an emu and an ostrich, with rhinos its even an more interesting story, a white rhino has a completely different behavior than an Indian and I think it would probably need a whole new rig.

I want to add something to this, which I somehow find very interesting.
In case of the panthera some people say that a normal Leopard is not necessary because we already have two leopard species. But in fact genetics has shown that the species which ist the closest relative to the Leopard is the lion. The next relative is the Jaguar and then there are the snow leopard which closest relative is the tiger. In contrast to that the clouded Leopard is the most far away and has somehow a special place within the panthera group.
In fact all big cats are related very close and they split from their basal species perhaps about 2-3 Million years ago. In contrast to that the Malayan tapir split away from the other tapires more than 20 mio years ago.
I think a lot of people just look at the appearance of species and in fact a tapir looks much more the same to another tapir than the lion to the tiger. And I think its also a normal view because nearly nobody is interrested in detailed taxonomy :D

I think some of it also that sometimes some will look at another feline, any feline, and say "oh another cat" or any canid and say "it's another wolf" . To be clear that's perfectly fine if they do that, I'm not going to judge their right to do so, but I will say that while yes, it's another cat/wolf/bear/whathaveyou it doesn't make it a reskin/clone. If creating the zoo roster was based around that, why have both a lion and a tiger (as an extreme example but to make my point)

Admitted, I'm also guilty of the same thing at times. I look at antelopes. I'm over them, done. I don't need anymore. They're all just another antelope to me.

You have "clones" in behavior, you have "clones' in looks.

In the real animal world, there ARE NO CLONES, just sub-species, but you have to understand, the same does not count for a game.

There are a couple of situations.

Some people call everything a clone, I don't know what they want or expect, but calling Proboscis Monkey, Babirusa and Sun Bears clones is just plain wrong, in game and real world standards, they are all very different behaving and awesome, no clones-in-game at all. Same goes with most antelopes, though I could see why some people think Thompson Gazelle and Springbok too similar.

Then you have the animals that wouldn't take much breath to create, but which are still very different, such as Leopards, they look like other big cats and behave a lot like them to be honest, but still they aren't clones, same goes with Spectacled Bears vs Black Bear ect ect. I count both types of Tapir here as well, their colors are so different. Same goes for white and black rhino's, they can't be really counted as game-clones, they look very differently, behave differently, and can be placed with different animals.

Then you have easy-way-outs and true game-clones, such as different types of giraffe, bush/desert Elephant, Black Bear vs Formosan Black Bear, Nile Crocodile AND Saltwater Crocodile, Asian Lions. The clones I think are already in the game are the Chimpanzee and Tiger-species. I'm personally VERY against such introductions in the game as:
1: They take spots of animals that DO look very unique and behave much differently.
2: Such animals can easily be created by MODDERS, they behave the same anyway.
3: They are easy money, and I'm against easy money.

The sollution for these animals is to release them FREE among 8 totally new animals, so for an African Pack you could say,
Chameleon / Meerkat / Red River Hog / White Rhinoceros / Secretary Bird / Fossa / Cresed Porcupine and Ratel, THEN add a few re-color animals along with vegetation and stuff like that, like add a different skin for giraffes and call it Masai or whatever, but don't take away a spot of the 8 original animals, which can be boars, big cats ect, just not color-variants that behave mostly the same, which in my eyes are really the clones.

The worst animal they can introduce in this game is the American Black Bear and the Nile Crocodile, the horror, the wasted opportunity, the cheapness.

Agree, I think it's amazing @random goat is doing this at all. Expecting this to be updated after every pack release is a bit much, so I agree with you, that doing it after about 3 packs or once a year is probably a better idea, if they are willing to do it again or if someone else would. I'd think just starting a completely fresh thread with new completely new lists might be easier than tallying everything from an existing list. We should keep in mind that this is something they wanted to do out of fun and interest, but it is a bit of work, yet it's not a job or requirement for them to do it at all.

If it were me, I'd probably wait til the last 2021 pack hit and then ask everyone for their top 20 list instead of top 30 again, keeping in line with that fact that's one year less of content that just passed, it would make sense to have a shorter list as well.
Thanks!
I think it could be a good idea to start a new thread in half a year or so, a bit after the summer DLC. And I guess it'd make sense to reduce the number of animals to 20-25 by then.
I'm happy to keep doing that myself.

I’m very glad you’re doing this. It seems like an ideal way for the developers get some ideas of animals the community wants to see. I think Meerkat has a chance only because of this list and that’s awesome for everyone involved.

@random goat thank you for the willingness to start another list later in the year!

I agree with the thoughts on the meerkat. I know it's going to probably be a difficult animal to program, it's small, it doesn't fit their idea of larger "seen from far away" animals, and I could easily see them just opting not to do it if there were no indication of any solid support for it other than posts that get lost in the shuffle. But with a list like this, it's very well established that the community wants to see them in the game. Even if we know it'll be a pain to code.

Sorry, I do go on, they're just my #1 want since the base game came out. I honestly don't know what I'll do when they do make it in. When not if! LOL

Cool... one tiny suggestion though; if we haven't got aquarium animals (fish, whales, sharks, sea turtles, manatees, etc.) by then, maybe make a separate thread for them, like the exhibit animals and aviary animals got.
