New Info On Odyssey - First Person Only, New "Currency" and More

EDIT 08/10/2020 -
Some additional info from my latest video (as before please excuse the text being a bit rough, as it's a copy of my script):

-------------------
-------

Over the past few days, Frontier have addressed a few additional questions raised to them by content creators.

So, in regards to Odyssey - Frontier have let us know there there will be a distinct difference between the on foot mission boards and mission givers. The jist of this is that they essentially offer different types of work. For example when on foot, a player maybe directly approached by a mission giver who will offer a task in exchange for a reward - and it's possible this reward maybe greater than that found on mission boards.

Odyssey will also feature an expanded cast of new engineers. Frontier didn't get into precise detail on who these are, where they will be located or what type of engineering they will perform. However, Frontier did say they will be talking about the new Engineers in the future.

There's a further clarification on the Apex travel service. As we know this is effectively a taxi service. Frontier again confirmed that Apex travel will not be instant. The trip will actually take place in a passenger vessel. Again, as they stated before - they aren't yet ready to share precisely how long the travel times will take...but also stated that the times will like be refined as the update closes in on launch.

And in a final piece of info, not related to Odyssey, Frontier confirmed that they will continue to offer unique in-game rewards for Community Goals, similar to the recent engineered weapon. Whilst Frontier didn't say how often this would occur, they did say, these world be offered when activities and narratives require.

ORIGINAL POST

I don't usually post my videos here, but I thought you might all appreciate the extra info:

And the script for those who don't want to watch (it's a bit of a wall of text, but it was written as a script not a forum post). No one needs to click the video. :) Excuse any typos or bad grammar as it wasn't intended to be read by anyone other than me... :)

----------------

The info in this video has come directly from Frontier in response to questions that have been passed onto them by myself as well as various other content creators and livestreamers.

In terms of what types of planets players will be able to access on foot, this will include all currently landable planets and moons in Horizons. There will also be the additional worlds with light atmospheres that will open up with Odyssey. All of these worlds will be explorable on foot.

Whilst moving around on foot you will be able to see other players on the surface. I assume you will also be able to see on foot players whilst you are in your ship as well, however the answer to this wasn't entirely clear - so I will try and get further clarification on that.

What we do know however, is that players will be able to play the entire game on foot, without once ever getting into a space ship. This is an option, and not something that is required, but the option is there. Apex is essentially a taxi service that will take you to all areas where the service is available. It cannot however transport you into deep space where the Apex hubs do not exist.

Using the Apex service will not be an instant transfer from point to point. Frontier haven't yet revealed exactly how long the journey will take, but they are very clear it will not be instant. Beyond that, there isn't any further information on this aspect just yet. So it leaves the question on how this will be presented to the player. The journey will take place on board an NPC ship. Players will sit in a crew seat, similar to what is currently possible in multicrew. You will be experience the journey from this point of view, until you arrive at your destination.

In terms of the available suits that players can own. There will be three variations in total. These then will be the same three mentioned in the dev diary, a separate suit for each of the following - combat, exploration and scavenging. The suits will also be upgradable. Frontier stated that this will occur through various means, but didn't go into specifics, although they did say the upgrades will be earned or unlocked through gameplay.

Regardless of which suit you choose however, you will not be locked into it. Players are free to switch between suits. Suits will be wearable inside your ship, SRV as well as on foot.

Suits are obviously just one type of new on foot related item. Others will include various types of equipment in addition to weapons. For those of you wondering if you will be able to buy all of these with your current credits, the answer to that appears to be no. A new form of trading will be introduced where new valuable items will be required for the trade.

Moving onto the subjects of what to do on foot...obviously very little has been revealed on this so far. We know that it will be possible to explore and scan plants. Beyond that there will be scavaging. This sounds like a main activity, and you can either scavenging directly by locating the wrecks yourself, or by picking up a mission from a mission giver.

With mission givers, you will be able to negotiate your reward, and this will be based upon your reputation with the mission giver and how much they trust you. Once you have the mission, you will be able to travel to the location there using the Apex transport, or you can travel there yourself.

Scavenging mission take place inside and around wrecks. Here, players will be able to find various items. The mission giver will want one of these, which you will have to return. The rest are yours to keep. It appears that players won't have magic pocket inventories, as items - especially the larger ones will be placed either in a ship or an SRV. Everything will then be returned to the mission giver to hand in. You can claim your reward and then either keep or sell the additional items.

You will have noticed there are also mission boards. These are not entirely replacing the cockpit based mission boards which will also be available whilst inside the ship onboard stations.

Talking of stations, we all know these are large. However the hubs are designed in such a way, that players will not be walking for 10, 20, 30 minutes or more simply to access your ship. The idea then appears to create immersive, fun and realistic environments, without also forcing players to have to walk for ages to get from point to point.

Beyond stations and settlements, Frontier were asked about the idea of large capital cities. To this Frontier stated they have nothing to share at this time. This was the same response about new SRV types. This might seem like a negative, but keep in mind this is almost always how Frontier answer when they want to reveal something specific later on - so we will see.

In terms of the hubs themselves and variations on them, Polygon in an interview confirmed there will be a total of three station interiors. How this works for groundbased settlments though is still unknown.

There's also been a pretty big question regarding 3rd person or 1st person on foot. The answer to this is 1st person only.

And as for NPC's...these guys will have a mixture of voice and text.

So that pretty much covers everything we know so far.

Interesting.
I do hope the travel time will not be shorter than current travel times.

This also opens the posibility of not transfering a ship, but traveling yourself to the ship
For example i have a ship parked in Robigo - to get there i have to fly another ship (or a carrier) - now i would have the posiblity to travel by Apex service
Apex to Colonia?
To Explorer's Anchorage?
Tour's to SAG A*?

I think they referred to 3rd person gameplay - the camera suite is not well, hrm, suited, for game play. But would be nice to have clarified if we will have the debug camera still.

:D S

The camera is useful for gameplay if you're playing as a 'wing'. You could have one playing operating it like a scout and feeding locations to other teammates.
