97% of Viewers (Players?) Want Ship Interiors!

I think the question of ship interiors is a no-brained. From my own perspective, I want it very badly. I believe that Lord Braben still very much intends that it becomes a reality and I wouldn't be surprised if there is a team currently quietly working towards that end.
The advent of space legs is already showing a trend towards that end. All the arguments being leveled against ship interiors are virtually identical to those that were used regarding space legs.
Ships are a focal point of the game.
We lived our lives in our pilot chairs and then we got to experience driving around outside them, now we will interact with our ships from a different perspective.
Ship interiors are an extension of this.
We know the flight characteristics of our ships and we learn their ins and outs, now we get to learn the exteriors and scale of our ships. Once we get to experience the interiors, our ships will become real things to us. We will get to know every aspect of them.
There is no reason why we couldn't have the option of either using the menu and doing the fade-to-black transition, or entering an entryway of some sort and interacting with the interior, either could be used depending on the situation.
For me the benefits would be, role play and immersion, space for future features, functionality and gameplay loops. Not to mention exciting possibilities for content creators. Imagine what Cmdr Reeny could come up with.

For some reason its so hard in elite. In other service games i play and have played, its much easier. At least there's a common ground thats universally accepted so that people can just agree or disagree on specialties or niche topics, not the fundamentals.

Elite seems to cause polarising opinions in every possible aspect of the game for some reason.

We have ships, space, and supercruise in common.

I guess the reasons aren't that hard too see, if you've played other games.

The folks who want money have different priorities than the people they want money from. Seems counter productive but what do I know. I'm just one of the people with the money they want 🤷‍♂️😉
If you develop a new content that takes years to introduce into the game then it is important that it is well thought out so it will be a profit in the end for those who deliver.

This is how all companies think, however.

But I'm a little surprised how little Frontier knows about players what it really wants but I understand that they're cautious.

I have always wondered if the answers are within the walls of the forum because I have seen many sticks in the wheels here.

If they were we wouldn't be here caring so much about it would we? The point is supply and demand. They don't seem to want to supply what it is we demand. So possibly less are interested than could potentially be. For me, it isn't even the lack of interiors. It's the complete lack of integrity or respect for their player base. Instead of telling us real truths, they feed us nonsensical excuses that even my kids can see right through. I'd like interiors eventually but it really isn't a deal breaker. I'm more upset about the lack of new current gen console native versions but we can't even get lies about this they just won't acknowledge questions regarding console at all. There's no frickin respect for us at all. But they sure want our monies though

From this one:

You seem to have a very broad idea of "interior". I associate this term more with a kind of wallpaper (basically cosmetics), without any further meaning, but you imply a certain functionality here that goes far beyond that. Maybe we have a different idea of this term, mine comes mainly from what a majority seems to associate with it. I think it is safe to say that most who advocate a ship's interior primarily have walking in their ships in mind. Maybe even firing up a coffee machine or going to the loo, but that's about it for most.
Nope, that's not what I said at all. Just because I didn't spell out the gameplay doesn't mean there isn't any. I put in brackets specifically, about it not being your own ship, why would that be cosmetic only. I'm sure you can use your imagination yourself to come up with some ideas, but I'll do it for you:

Mission to retrieve an item from a derelict/abandoned ship in space (EVA over to the ship and enter and find the mcguffin, this could be data, an object or something else, the ship may or may not be abandoned).

Mission to repair a damaged ship in space (EVA to ship to fix a part in the engine room).

Disable ship and retrieve a passenger, possible fight with some crew members.

I'm sure many other people can think of some more.

As to the inside of your own ship, yeah, not much can be done there. You could have your own quarters which is a place you can personalize.

I never liked the God like AMFU and the repair limpets. I would have much preferred it if they were band aids that degraded more quickly, which would then open the door to do repairs of your own while in space. Of course this would be more likely if you were away from habitation as a station would still be able to repair your ship fully.

But yeah, there isn't a huge amount of gameplay that can be done with ship interiors, that's why I'm happy they have concentrated with what they have done for Odyssey, which is where the vast majority of the gameplay will be. If they can add ship interiors later, then that's good, if not, it's not the end of the world. I can easily.live without them.

There maybe some people that just want to walk around their ship, but we both know Fdev aren't going to spend months and months of development time to just create a cosmetic.

What I would be happy with is the bridge, an airlock where you decide what to wear (so it has a purpose), a captains quarters where you can store all your personal items and personalise (again another purpose) and way to get to your SRV if you have one installed (again it has a purpose) and a corridor or turbo lift connecting them all together depending on the size of the ship. The rest just isn't necessary. This would dramatically reduce the amount of dev time to do interiors and each room would have it's purpose.

For the bits I bolded out of what you said, I know you won't believe this, but maybe the truth isn't what you think it is.

I've kinda given up on odysee myself until it falls in my lap, so didn't notice... This thread is 10 pages long already.. talking about whats coming in the distant future after odyseey.

Aren't you all excited about odysee? There's an expansion coming out in a month+. This one is fantasy! What about that one!

Vote? What vote??............Oh! Youtube, that's why I missed it;)

I'm not into Ship Interiors.....not yet!
Walking around my Ship to see how big it was would get boring REAL FAST!
Unless there would be a reason to get out of my seat, ie to maybe go outside in space to fix something, but even then it wouldn't be my first choice, after a while I'd just press three buttons to do the job from my seat.
Now docking with an abandoned Ship, that would be interesting!

As Arthur said in the stream with regard to the 'fade to black' to re-enter your Ship.......going up the steps for the first few times, would be OK, but after the 100th time would become redundant gameplay.

Stuff like this at the moment isn't gameplay IMO, it's eye candy that would get boring really quickly & wouldn't be used if quicker ways are there instead......wasted development time!!

It's a whiskers poll and the reason that the slogan changed from "eight out of 10 owners said their cat prefers it" to "eight out of 10 owners who expressed a preference said their cat prefers it".
Not all of us cats were asked, and the poll only had a Y/N option.

I prefer a moist pouch.

To roughly paraphrase the cast and writers of Firefly - Serenity is another cast member, the cast and the ship is a family and the ship's kitchen is the heart.

So I can see why people want it, but I can also see that devs have priorities that aren't the same as ours.

Also a basic principle of tyranny. ;) You should see the discussion about silence in my country atm.

That looks like a chat room. Makes for nice gameplay, but only as long they do a tabletop d&d session.

The poll wasn't 'do you want them yet' it was 'do you want them'.

We'll put you down as a Yes - thank you for voting (y)

Yeah! I wouldn't know that, 'cos I'm not much into Elite Streamers on YT, Twich etc....unless it's Frontier themselves;).
Then I suppose in time yes!............but not now, get the Odyssey DLC gameplay content completed first, then walkies on the my Ship later.....much later!

I think part of the problem here is that questions like this don't take into account the opportunity cost.

Providing ship interiors isn't just a case of flicking a button, and the work required to provide these will come at the cost of something else - something potentially more involving/rewarding...
Depends what OA is trying to do:

1) Try and convince fdev that Space Legs should be next after Base Legs - presumably another 2 year wait and similar DLC costs - an admirable goal
2) Try and get fdev to explain why we don't get Space Legs this time or the complete Neil Armstrong moment DB clearly wants. Again, an admirably journalistic goal
3) Try and convince fdev to delay Odyssey to add Space Legs - meaning we get Odyssey 2 years later and at twice the price - not sure 97% would want that
4) Make fdev put in some rooms to represent ship interiors and allow people to buy space-rugs and space-banners for their space-house. Do it like Star Citizen so things highlight, but aren't actually very interactive. Cheap as chips (well, maybe a year and a bit cheaper than Odyssey - not free and not 'now'). I don't think 97% want that - I think most want the full Space Legs with eva / salvage etc etc

Difficult to tell from the 'ya want stuff!', 'no stuff!' options OA gave his streamlets 🤷‍♀️

Yes to ship interiors. Of course. But don't make me walk 10 minutes to get to the bridge every time, I like the 'fade to black' option. Travel times in ED are already stupidly too long because the FSD won't spool up to speed fast enough (esp. when out of gravity wells, acceleration is painfully slow).

I do imagine FD may have bitten off more than they can chew with ship and station interiors and "no artificial gravity/inertial dampening".

Why?

Because anyone in a ship in normal space making combat maneuvers or similar seat of the pants flying, would be turned to jelly, smashed against the interior due to the forces exerted. Not supercruise or hyperspace, which are assumed to be inertial damped- warped space.

Also, we never got the cool damage models like the one they showed off for the Anaconda. I think DB "thinks they're in", but the extremely limited Anaconda damage that shows is a far cry from the blown out ship shown during Kickstarter and the salvage type play that could occur around / in it.

We were also teased with different anatomy for NPC that had lived their lives in environments with different than 1-g. So maybe shorter, stronger from higher-g worlds and taller, weaker from space stations and lower-g worlds. I don't think we will see that, however.
If we get autopilot for star travel yes then it makes sense, until that happens I don’t see the point, I’m sure it’s coming, but fleshing out all the ships is a huge job and I don’t believe they already did it, why don’t everyone just take a chill pill and see how odyssey turns out and if it’s a success THEN it would make sense.
However if we made a poll where you could choose between atmosphere planets with animal life jungles water cities and walking around in your ship I guess I know the outcome of that one, and that will be the next thing, WE WANT ATMO PLANETS BECAUSE WE CAN NOW WALK.
It’s coming ladies and gents let’s hope the game is financial steady long enough to make it happen.
