As we are all aware it’s easy to get the wrong end of the stick when people reply to your posts,

And we have all seen people rage quitting from the forums because they feel that people are picking on them or being just obnoxious towards their views.

My question to you all is, Do you feel you have a forum Nemesis, that one person who appears to always find your posts and reply while quoting you with what you feel is an over opinionated view of themselves and what you just posted?

I personally appreciate constructive criticism, but when an articulate individual goes beyond what you originally posted and then makes a personal reply with a inaccurate opinion of your character, it’s difficult not to take offence.

As you know if you try to be articulated back to them and try not to be put down, it just feels that the issue escalates.

So have you blocked anyone, ignored certain individuals or even reported to the moderators that you feel that various people are bullying?

I feel that if people share their views on this subject, it will help others understand that its not just them that get those replys but probably that everyone gets them.

No, haven't blocked anyone and don't think I have any nemesiseseses...(what's the plural of nemesis? ;))

I have people I disagree with - sometimes forcefully, and the reverse is also true but I'm way too long in the tooth to take it seriously.

If anyone has a problem with me, it's their problem :)

In order to have a nemesis you've got to give someone the satisfaction of winding you up, if someone wants to be a 'flaming idiot' more fool them - i tend to ignore posts that turn personal, i view that as a sure sign they have lost whatever argument they were trying to have. :D

the moment they stop attacking my ideas and start attacking me signals that they have no answer to my argument and my work is done. ;)

I also understand that people can get very emotionally invested in their ideas and take it personally when you disagree with them so tend to make a bit more of an allowance for the OP when replying, in most threads that's the person who is usually the source of most arguments from what I've seen.

I’ve only got one person that I have decided to block for the simple reason that this person doesn’t just reply to the original post but also replies with an attack on my reason for posting suggesting that I have a high opinion of myself.
I think the person resents the fact that many agree with the post thus making them think that I am a popular individual, and do it just to feel that they are bringing me down to reality.
A little pointless as I have no opinion as to where I stand within the community.
I know it’s not just me who gets this as there are members who feel that the people behind Lave Radio are above their station, (negative Itunes reviews)
It’s a real shame because there are member here who just want to add to the community while there are those who are unable to make an impact on the community and feel better about themselves by either posting negative replies or posting negative reviews.

I actually had a user message me as he was concerned he'd disagreed with me once too often and was worried i might think he was doing it on purpose, it gave me a good laugh as i hadn't even noticed, i tend to read posts not user names.

AndyB you are one of the many i can trust to give an intelligent responce.
along with Cody and Darren Grey aswell as breakpontuk.
sorry if i have missed out the other 300 members that give an intelligent responce to my views.

I keep each thread independent - so even if someone really winds me up in one thread, I'm still willing to be their bestest friend in another if they happen to agree with the points I'm expressing there.

At the end of the day we've all got common goals here, and that's to enjoy ourselves and the games. No point making stuff personal. Even when some do resort to personal attacks I'll usually try to defer back to the topic, and ignore them otherwise. I'm a pacifist by nature, although I'm very willing to attack someone's viewpoint (as I'm sure you're seen), I dislike attacking individuals unless they're deliberately being counter-productive, and then it's not for personal reasons, but in order to actually debate with them.

Having said all that, I have had some people who have just not taken anything gracefully. On one forum I visit someone said "game cartridges for the Mega Drive and SNES are RAM", and when I replied with a simple, "Actually, they're ROM, hence why binary files of those cartridges are referred to as ROMs", even though I'd agreed with pretty much the rest of his post, he started to chew my face off and started complaining that I shouldn't be programming if I can't tell the difference between ROM and RAM, and suggesting I learn how to use Google, along with throwing insults everywhere.

He then waited for me to post on any topic anywhere and then replied with more insults. Needless to say, he couldn't stick around for long... he probably should've realised I was mod there, to be honest. :D

I think I know who we're talking about here...

I have met exactly one person on this forum who I don't like, and I think most of you know who it is.

I appreciate honesty, and if I have something to say I'm generally quite blunt but I do try more to be polite on forums because it's easy to be misunderstood when you're nothing but text on a screen and some people have very thin skins... I generally don't really bother much about attacks on myself or my character because, at the end of the day, none of the people on a forum know anything really about my actual personality or personal life so any attacks they make on my character are based on a position of complete ignorance. I fully expect the same treatment back in return, and if I ever launch a personal attack on you or any member of your family then I would be cross if you didn't laugh in my face (or text box).

However, unwarranted and shockingly subjective attacks on groups of people, especially people who are trying their level best to be active and contributing members of a community are not really meant to BE part of a community. The general name for that sort of person is a "troll". Trolling forums for attention and recognition and just trying to be centre of attention whilst not really contributing anything useful.

I usually take a certain approach with trolls to try and work out for myself if they're just over-eager or if they really are mindless trolls.

1. friendly post in forum pointing out that such behaviour isn't necessary or welcome, usually containing a few smiley faces COS THEY'RE FRIENDLY!

2. PM outlining that slagging people off/swearing/being a troll just isn't cricket and that it would be jolly good if they would try and be open minded.

3. scream for a mod to waggle the mod stick at the troll.

In my entire time on forums I've dealt with exactly five of this sort of person. Three were banned, one mended his ways, and one's fate is currently unknown (he has so far reached stage 2).

It's a shame that forums of any size have to attract this sort of person occasionally, but thankfully their time is short on this earth, then they board their spam ship and fly away. Best approach? Ignore them.

:)

The podcast is awesome. No Welshmen were hurt in the making of it. PETA would approve.

EDIT: to actually answer the question, no, I have no nemesis. Not on this forum, at least. Although Michael doesn't give me enough information about Elite... ;-)

"Don't let the *******s grind you down." i think your responses are a little to intelligent:D

that seems to be happening to my current nemesis, and Ive also had that when i was a mod for a forum.

wise words indeed.

I will be interested to see if I get a response from my nemesis; no doubt he will pop up with how his responses are constructive and not an attack on my posts?

I'm also waiting for a response - if I get one stating that I'm some sort of overbearing, overopinionated powermonger with delusions of godhood or that I personify one of [insert philosopher/psychologist name]'s criteria for sociopathy or oedipal tendencies then I'll know what sort of troll I'm dealing with.

And yes, I have had all of the above levelled at me by the five trolls I mentioned before. Including a very long and intricate psychological analysis of my personality and childhood, all based on forum posts to a webcomic forum.

We'll see.

Like I said, though, sometimes just ignoring the problem is enough to make it go away.

Very kind of you :) I've never had a problem with anyone on the forums. I've seen a lot of weird paranoia / playing the victim during the Kickstarter campaign but otherwise it's an immensely pleasant, friendly and mature forum.

Darren your replies have always been intelligent, and yes 99.9% of the other members have been intelligent in their responses also, but it only takes one to dampen ones spirit.

And that’s what I have been doing; I take great satisfaction that every time I see a post it just says
“This message is hidden because XXXXXXXX is on your ignore list.”
It makes me smile when I reply to the post just before their post, knowing that they are being ignored.

Tiz always sad to hear when people can't behave themselves. :D
I try to never criticise someone for disagreeing with me, as even i disagree with me most of the time. ;)
But i know i'm always right, so what can ya do!

I've disagreed with quite a few people here, and there are a few people's posts that i now skip over without reading because they haven't exactly been nice in some of the posts they've posted. :(
Mainly i try to read as many posts as i can!
But because of time constraints sometimes i'll just read the op, comment on that, then move on to the next topic.
