A guide to good base jumping locations

A guide to good base jumping (and other SRV extreme sport) locations

Several years ago I had one of the most fun Elite: Dangerous sessions ever doing SRV base jumping off the top of a huge mountain on Njokujinun 1 with Cmdrs Snowman and PeachSlicesV.

Source: https://youtu.be/cQRnMqEpU4Y

Alas, that mountain has since been nerfed out of existence and, although I've looked from time to time, I've never found another quite like it.

This thread is an attempt to pull together a list of great places to go base jumping in an SRV.

What I'm looking for are huge mountains, with a nice flat area on top where you can happily land a ship or two. Preferably they should be low-G (less than 0.2 although I guess there's some fun to be had from base jumping on high G worlds too). If they have interesting slopes and/or interesting scenery/views then all the better.

If anyone has (or finds) any of these could they post the following information:

  • system name
  • planetary body
  • co-ordinates of landing spot
  • distance from Sol
  • gravity
  • height (to get this flight dead level away from the landing spot until your ship is over the ground at the base of the mountain and then make a note of your altitude).
  • availability of flat landing areas for the ship (basically rate them as good, fair, poor, impossible)
If you can also include screenshots of the mountain and/or landing spot, or videos of your base jump then all the better.

In addition to high mountains I guess we might as well catalogue any other really good SRV extreme sport locations (e.g. canyon jumping or ridge running).

I have one mountain candidate which I'll post here later and I also seem to recall that one of the engineer bases has some terrific canyons around it which can be cleared in a mighty SRV bound.

In the words of Cmdr PeachSlicesV - "For those that are about to jump, may the mountain make them truly grateful"!

The cherry on the top for base jumpers tho' is that there are a number of greenish mountains with domed landable summits which rise around 15km above the pinkish surface below.

Gonna have to watch this thread. I love SRV and ship shenanigans.

Many a crater can be traced back to some of my accidents.... :D

I did go on a scouting mission to find a tall mountain, but after 10~ beige uninteresting balls of rock, I lost interest. I need a new way to find them...

I'm curious, why would they have nerfed a mountian??
Was there some sort of terrain glitch or something?

It was a terrain glitch, but I wish they'd left that particular one in via handcrafting when they fixed the bug. It was an excellent enigma and a place for a tourist spot.

PS: Thanks for starting this thread Alec, I've never tried SRV base jumping other than very small ones in BRC races, but I'm keen to give it a go sooner or later.

Hopefully the graphics changes in 3.0 will make for some truly impressive views from some of these.

Planet Wilson is actually a good place for that, aside from deep canyons to jump down and lose your ship in there there are also other parts of the planet where you can find giant mountains like that one:

106mountains14ekk7f.png

Got back in the recent beta there just for fun and to do some recless beta jumping (thanks to very low gravity without explosions)

betawilsonjumpdsk9p.jpg

Alltough I completley lack any concrete coords, would have to go back and look. Tough places for base jumps are plentyfull, cruise around a bit in SC around the planet and you gonna stumble upon something pretty soon. Only downside is its about a 1000ly travel from the bubble.

I can't remember which release (it was AGES ago) but they changed something which affected a whole bunch of "interesting" terrain including the enormous mountain in the Nervi system, some of the vertical sided monolith mountains such as the one on Altais 2B and that glorious mountain in Njokujinun. The one thing I really struggle to find these days, and my biggest disappointment with planets in ED at the moment, are large interesting mountains with flat landing areas on the top (the one in that video in the OP was just beautiful - you can see that there was this huge flat area on top where loads of ships could land). These days all mountains seem to use the same terrain/curve distribution for the entire mountain ..

image10.png

.. so they look bumpy from a distance and then as you get closer in the terrain is equally bumpy, and closer in still equally bumpy, right down to ground level, leaving you with no flat landing spots. I don't think mountains are actually like that in reality, they tend to have large flat areas when you get in close (but maybe this is an atmospheric weathering effect?). Subject for a different thread perhaps.

Edit: that first image in the previous post from Bomba Luigi is a perfect example of this. That said, you do get lucky sometimes - is it me Bomba or is there a nice flattish (if sloped) landing area pretty much right at the top?

Oh yeah, plenty room to park a ship up there. Had a look trough my pictures and luckily found even one from the cockpit with cords:

Update 2.2 was when the beigification and terrain normalization happened.

Beta Sculptoris, Smith Station, is at the base of a magnificent mountain .... I think I measured it at 7km high ....

and it has a persistent mining operation between the base and the mountain, both visible in this photo:

Here's one of me at the top ... for the selfie ;)

But when I took a look at the mountain in Beta .... it had changed, looking somewhat nerfed [mad] ... and the mining farm had vanished !

So, I'd say, expect a lot of differences .... some poorer, some better .... in 3.0 !
