Voted yes - simply because the devs of every other game I have purchased that has later been released on steam have then provided a free steam key. Why would Frontier not do this?

Hi,

I bought the game 2 days before it was released on Steam. (I'm definitely loving it!) If I would've known it was going to be released on Steam, I would have waited. I'd appreciate keys for existing owners. Thanks!

It's not a key that we need. We just need to be able to activate and install our game through Steam. It's an established process that I've used before with the original Borderlands. I had a retail copy of Borderlands. Borderlands online multiplayer was handled by GameSpy. GameSpy folded in the recent past. Steam adopted Borderlands and set it up so people who purchased the retail game could activate it in their Steam accounts, download and install, and play multiplayer on the Steam servers.

The big difference with Elite is that we would not be using the Steam servers when playing the game. That's it. I would like to have my copy of Elite managed by Steam because I have many Steam games and having everything in one place is just simple and stupid. It's basically my one stop shop for video games. Those who oppose Steam are probably a bunch of older not-so-tech-savvy people who may have played the original game back in the 80's but don't trust digital software distribution and aren't typical modern PC gamers. One foot in the past, one in the present. There's no difference between owning a game bought through Steam vs owning one on a DVD you bought in the town where you live. If having the little ones and zeros on a disk is what trips your triggers, just create a backup of the game in Steam. Steam gives the user the ability to burn your games to disk as a form of backup. Once you buy a license to a game, you own it, regardless of where the little ones and zeros are stored.

can anyone confirm steam has it own server ? that is not tied to the retail because i would think it be like most games like Assassin's Creed and mmo's like star trek online and other mmo all you do is hit the icon and it pop up the same launcher we use right now

Can I Haz Steam Key? Yes PLZ!

Yeah. I can't think of a big reason why I WOULDN'T want a Steam Key.

In fact, I'm a bit miffed that we're not automatically getting one. When I found out it was on Steam, I was like, "WOOT! Going to DL it via Steam right now!"

Then I remembered how it works.

Why wouldn't we get a Steam key? I like Steam. If you're not a fan of Steam, fine, but I enjoy Steam, as a mater of preference.

It updates things for me.
I can write reviews on it.
My friends can easily see what I'm playing a quickly view the store page (potentially making new wing mates to fly with)
If a Mac or Linux version is released, I'll be able to put it on those machines, with ease.

I think I could probably go on but... I think the big point is... I kinda feel a bit ripped off. Since when was this coming out on Steam? If I would have known that, I'd have waited for it to do so.

So... Steam Key Please.

Since this is supposed to be a multiplayer game in a persistent universe, it would stand to reason that the more players we have, the better. Roughly 20K players in two days is a really big population boost in the Elite galaxy.
What is up with the Steam hating? It's a one-stop shop for 90% of the games out there, and a FANTASTIC way for independent developers to get a slice of the market. Honestly, all the Steam hate is totally misplaced. Grow up kids and accept that Steam is here to stay. Resistance is futile.

So who are the people that hate the steam? Bunch of older not-so-tech-savvy people or is it kids? Or maybe both those groups?
Grow up and don't make wild assumptions.

FYI: I have played original ED on my C64 and I have my Steam account for over 11 years - wild assumption mode now: which is probably more years than you live, judging from your posts.

At last count I had something north of 100 indie games on steam that I bought elsewhere that provided steam keys. It has become pretty much the standard. I've even been surprised about early alpha games I forgot about sending me steam keys when they hit steam. It's funny the games that haven't provided steam keys are bigger games like Rise of Flight and the new IL-2 Stalingrad (both have the same publisher) that I paid a lot of money to.

Frontier - I bought alpha and a second copy recently for a total of around $400. I trusted you with my money. You can trust me with a steam key. Just tie it to my account. I have steam open all the time on my computer, greater download speeds (14+ MB/sec), they got your DRM covered or pop up your own launcher, and the other stuff people have mentioned including the thousands of great reviews you would be getting from previous buyers.

It really puzzles me why any game that came to steam would not provide keys for their most loyal customers.

Not sure if it's been mentioned yet as I don't want to wade through the previous pages, but giving Steam keys to the existing fanbase would certainly be helpful for the review ratings on Steam. As it stands now, the rating on steam lists the game as "Mostly Positive". E:D isn't the easiest game to get into so I can see how some people might get hyped over the trailers, buy the game, then not immediately experience what they thought they were going to and leave less than stellar reviews. If we who have stuck with the game since early on and see its merits have a chance to voice our experience through a review of the game (which I think can't be done on Steam unless you own the game through them), it might help otherwise uninformed people see how incredible the game is while also clearing up confusion about what exactly the game is and how it is starting out.

Suffice it to say, I want a Steam key.

I wish they had announced it was coming to steam i would have waited, it was not a good surprise i like all my games through steam, so steam key please, pretty please.

I play my games on STEAM almost exclusively so I would really like a STEAM key for my purchased game, I'm a backer and I believe it a good policy to give STEAM keys to the people who believed and gave money to the project.

Give us STEAM keys!
