well they certainly made a lot of people think it wouldn't. If it was an outright lie I don't know, needless to say they gave the impression it was never coming to steam, and that caused many people who usually only ever buy over steam (myself included) buy the game anyway.

They did no such thing. No such thing. *You* had the impression that the game was never coming to Steam, and that isn't FD's fault. Sorry and all that.

FD have never said that.

Will you launch the game on Steam?
David Braben: No. We've got to support the game with our own back end anyway, so I don't see the benefit of it.
Well, I would suggest the benefit is 100m users, which is a huge potential audience.
David Braben: Yes, that's true. It's something we would look at, but it would have to then interface with what we're doing, and the two would potentially conflict. We have to provide the back end.

This is pretty much all the info we got, and it took only 4 months to come to steam! They definitely knew it would, large companies don't make spur of the moment decisions. They said it probably wouldn't and it did, and with no warning! if it's not an outright lie it's at least a little dirty, wouldn't you agree? and now, not to release the steam keys! I mean come on man, seriously?

...They said it probably wouldn't...

The quote says "It's something we would look at". The rest of it is a typical engineer's response of "no but maybe." Still waiting to see your proof for "100% proven that Frontier lied".

David Braben said the game wouldn't launch on Steam, it didn't launch on Steam.

When told about Steams userbase he said he'd look at it. He never said, ever, that the game would never retail on Steam. That's not even evasive weasel words there, never ruled it out at all.

My goodness, the lengths you will go to defend the rich and elite (pun intended). You are bending over backwards and picking my posts apart for inconsistencies just to try and defend... what exactly. So that you can make sure the backers never get their keys? "Hell will freeze over the day jgm allows the original backers to get their steam keys! They're good for nothings, and they deserve nothing! especially because they funded the game in the first place!" This is what you sound like, sheesh. Is it so important to you that we don't get steam keys? What is it? What exactly is your problem with me asking for a steam key?

This isn't about keys this is about accusations and proof. You stated that it is "100% proven that Frontier lied". I'm calling you on it.

And off he goes. Oh well, another for the kill file.

Cheapskates? Merging current accounts with steam account cost nothing except a little time.

There is such features, and steam does not take any ones dollars for it.
People seem unaware of the migrate feature in steam.

Im guessing what people really mean when they say they want steam keys is that they want to transfer their key to steam.

As stated in many posts in many threads before.
They can just move your current ED to steam. No need for new keys or anything.
I find it wierd that people dont know that.

Many people know it, and to many people it's just not the same thing. Adding it to Steam (edit: as a non-steam game) is one thing, but having it legit so you can take advantage of other features like reviewing, Steam VR, Steam broadcasting, tracking hours played, etc. is another thing.

I have no problem with Steam and I have bought a few games from them, but I really am not going to buy Elite again just so I get the few benefits Steam offers.
I see no advantage for playing ED on Steam.
I understand why Frontier are allowing Elite to be sold by Steam, as it opens up a huge market for sales, which can only be good for the future development of ED.

I haven't read all the pages upon pages of comments so forgive me if this has already been brought up or is no longer relevant.

During early days (beta) there was a general attitude that Elite: Dangerous wouldn't be on Steam for a long time, if ever. I'm sure at least a few, probably many people bought the game direct from Frontier with this impression. As such, I feel that Frontier should provide Steam keys at least for those who bought it before the Steam release. They don't have to, but it would be a very nice gesture.

There's no real downside to having Frontier give out a key for people who've bought the game - if you don't want it, don't use it.

i wish i could change my 'yes' to 'no' now. i just read what michael brooks said in dev update. 'it could take weeks to work through'. damn, i'd rather they invest that time in improving the game.

I voted "Don't care". While I love Steam I won't be putting my copy of Elite onto it as I don't run Steam while playing Elite; I don't want another game downloading updates while I am trying to play.

???

My version of Steam pauses downloads and updates when I load and start playing a game.

same here, i didnt vote yes, but there wasnt a no option to the poll either. I DO care, and i dont need a steam key.

Its not like the whole team has to switch jobs now to connect our ED accounts to Steam, be serious. The game designers will do their thing, the artists will do their thing and so on, according to what they are specialized in.

Isn't generating Steam keys for pre-steam buyers a simple matter of FD paying Steam to do so?..... Ah, I see the problem clearly now... :)

I want a key! I just got the game a few weeks before the steam release!

I would much prefer it to manage updates since I have a slow internet connection and the default client is manual in this regard.

Pragmatism

If passing over the Steam Keys to older users means that they can download the upgrades from their servers then I'm all for it. It means that the only people left using Frontier for their upgrades will be me and... erm... err... what's his name?.. <scratches head> Ah Yes!.. FuzzySpider <grin>

Maybe the upgrades will load faster if there are less people downloading from there.

I've never been a big fan of Steam. I didn't like it when the Half Life 2 CD I bought from an actual bricks-and-mortar shop turned out to be more of an invitation to a hefty download from their website. I was also none too keen on their DRM. If Half Life 2 wasn't such a brilliant game then their little experiment would've fallen flat on its face, and we wouldn't have had the Microsoft Suits looking over there and thinking that if always-on DRM is good enough for the PC then it's good enough for their XBone.

Although I don't like the always-on DRM and I don't like a single shop having such a monopoly I do concede that they have had a positive impact on PC gaming, and they haven't made the DRM too restrictive. They are a bit like a benign dictator. And the problem with such dictatorships is when there is a change of leadership.
