just for the sake of having my games in one big library and to have use of all features steam give me. It's just good policy to give your loyal people a key. I had to hold of on playing elite until wings so I could coop with my buddy in our private group. Having it on steam might convince some more buddies to join up :)

it would certainly be a nice gesture from FD but its nothing i couldn't live without. if for example FD had to pay steam for every key they gave to current owners then i wouldn't expect them to absorb the cost and i doubt people would be too happy to pay it should FD gave them that option.

This whole thread and discussion sickens me. The WANT WANT WANT thing going on here is appalling. Yes, Frontier (once again) handled it completely wrong. But neither I, nor anyone else is entitled to anything here.

Totally agree.

The demands for changes to the game are ridiculous.

The demands for steam keys are ridiculous.

The demands for changes to mechanics not yet implemented are ridiculous.

Community went from a mature, engaged, thoughtful one to some kind of infantile rabid mob very quickly after launch.

Maybe they want to wait a while so all the bitter trolls don't steam in with their negative reviews.

Perhaps. But works the other around also: the commanders with a real passion for the game and who might me blinded by it. We have seen with metacritics as well. There where a lot of commanders who gave it a 10. Really? I did gave ED what it deserves, as in what I personally think about it. Iirc it was a 6. It could turn out that in the end it could deserve perhaps a 8 or even a 9. BUT there is SO much which should be added (DDF stuff) before I could give it that. Mr Braben build his house, there is some furniture in the living room, but to ME the rest of the house feels empty - no furniture, no TV, no nothing. Mr Braben could still fill the house, so we have to wait. Perhaps at the end of the year and before the first DLC hits us we have a far better understanding/view of Mr Braben's house. It could turn out to become magnificent, it could stay rather empty. Time will tell.....

Note: I voted YES.

I voted "Don't care". While I love Steam I won't be putting my copy of Elite onto it as I don't run Steam while playing Elite; I don't want another game downloading updates while I am trying to play.

you can set steam not to download when playing

I would also like a steam key as that way I can get the skins and what not via Steam DLC, since I can not purchase them with my current Debit card (will not allow international transactions or even setting up Paypal with it).

I get the impression , it's the mind changing, that bugging players, the thought the game was going to have offline single player , then no , was not going to be on steam , then yes , Combat logging , seems to be apart of the game now. Collectively I think the infantile rabid mob , are behaving quite well , Of course playing in a private server, it's more or less single player with no combat logging

I simply can't understand what you consider so "ridiculous" and why would you be "sickened" by it, since all that people are asking is to get a Steam key for a game that we already own. Its not like we will get two saved slots, or other things that would give us an advantage. We just get the benefits mentioned so far, like having the game in our Steam games library for real, not non-steam game, that is not the same in any way, getting the option to post a review, faster patch downloads, maybe Steam achievements in the future, these kind of things.

Many people already mentioned that if they knew that the game would be released on Steam, they would have waited.

Exactly... hurts no one.. but makes MANY people happy.

I will be very dissapointed if they dont give their clients steam keys... I would have waited a month had i known.... but it never said on their webpage their would be a steam release. SO.... pls do the right thing and give us our keys

Valve aren't an empty lot on a store front, they are a business. They typically ask for 30% on games sold.

If everyone who has the game gets a key for steam someone will have to pay for that. Would you be happy to be charged for this key? Or do you think that FD should give valve money so you can have key?

I think the question isn't that WE want a steam key or not, moreover does Frontier want to give us steamkeys to defuse the ticking PR BOMB on Steam.

What's a Steam Key?

As far as I'm aware Steam is just a way of downloading games. I have GTA4 on Steam and, what's that other one with the arrow in the knee thing? Can't remember. But that one anyway.
Seems like Steam can be used for a lot more, but I don't know what.

Don't care...

..or more accurately....

I don't understand:

1) what all this fuss is about
2) why I would want or need a key if I already have the game
3) why some people are so very needily passionate about getting one. Is it just you young'uns empty fixation with steam achievements ?
4) why Valve isn't seen as the real enemy of consumer freedom and protection that it most obviously is.

I'd like a Steam key, so that I can make use of what Steam offers the same way that I do with all the other games I run through Steam.

I'm not demanding it, I won't be quitting if I don't get it and I'm not feeling particularly insulted by the apparent u-turn as regards the game going on Steam (even if I'd known it was coming, I'd still have been buying it ahead of time so I could play at release), but I'd certainly like one.
