A possible way to inspire people to play in Open

Sometime last night...

GANKED: "Whoever that was that ganked me, thanks, I just lost a month's worth of exploration data. Why would anyone destroy an unarmed exploration ship?
SYS CHAT CHORUS: "That's what you get for playing in Open dum dum. Play in solo if you don't want to get ganked. That's what it's there for."

Sometime this morning...

"Hmmm... How can we get more people to play in Open?"

Ah yes, the "Even though I lost, I've convinced myself that I won" phenomenon.

Gankers have scared me and driven me out of Open play. Now, I sulk in Solo and post messages in system chat, just knowing that they are monitoring system chat and shaking their fist at me and my clever solution to the problem. That'll show 'em, stupid gankers. kek

Nobody gives a if you play in solo.

Its a nuanced issue,an exploration build is made of paper, shields are for the odd faux pas not for combat. And a ganker is engineered for dealing death.
I went exploring in a krait that was perfectly capable of surviving a gank.
Unfortunately the people who I met along the way didn't.

Well, Nobody gives a if you play in open either - and we need to stop venerating it as "The onlyest way to play Elite"
Literally never said that.
Cite where I said it.
I'm playing in Solo right now, as a matter of fact.

The regularity of threads suggesting that Powerplay, BGS, or both should be open only seem to contradict this. Some people care intensely.

(This may derail into YAOOPPT, but that's a risk I'm willing to take).
Oh, I'm happy to have a philosophical discussion about PvP game mechanics and the modes that they are played in.
But this discussion was explicitly started with regards to ganking, and has been carried as such until you attempted to move the goalpost.

Thought it was implied from this;

It's a simple idea that could easily be implemented with the existing mechanics, as they appear to work. Since most of the people who play in solo do so to avoid pirates and gankers, the only way to lure people out of solo is to drastically reduce the risk of encountering those types. And I think you could do that by instituting a "death penalty" for anyone who attacks an unarmed ship. Basically, attack an unarmed ship and your commander is erased as if you had hit the menu option yourself. All your ships, all your money, all your ranks-- gone. Enjoy your new Sidewinder!
I see, should we be erased because we play the game differently, in the only mode out of three that has random encounters possible. can we introduce this same system to anyone who combat logs, after all, it's a exploit.

Welp, guess you thought wrong.

Meh, you just weren't clear enough. Try being clearer :)
I like dogs.
Huah, well... why don't you like cats?
I never said I don't like cats. I just said I like dogs.
Well, you should be more clear next time!
