activating towers

after a long time playing elite I decided to try the guardian sites for a change. I simply cant find my way around them and when it comes to activating the towers (forget it). If I manage to find one I cant get it to rise out of the ground, when I get one by accident ok I can activate it but I have nevcer found them all so I have never got the blueprint. Can anyone tell me where I can find a map so I have at least some idea where they are. Also how do you make them rise. Many thanks

Usually they are located quite symmetrical alongside the whole structure.

You need to activate the 2 that are nearby the main "machine" at one end of the structure, that will make the others raise up from the ground when you get nearby them.
Look for little triangle pedestals with holes in them, on the ground.

Here's a sample map. There are a few different structure layouts, so it won't apply to every single one, but it can give you the idea of how they are placed around the structure:

If you haven't completed it yet this page from Cmdr's Toolbox has the map for the site you're at. When you first get there drive up to the top of the structure (far left on the map) to the altar and that should activate the first pylon (and a couple of Guardian sentinels). Shoot the sentinels but not the pylon yet - you don't need to be looking for the pylons and panicking over the timer running out. Activate the other 5 pylons one by one, in any order, collecting relics as those towers come up as well. Once you get the 6th pylon, shoot the blue glowy bit (you need to be more or less facing it directly) to activate it and start the timer.

Each time you shoot another pylon, it adds a couple of minutes to the timer so you should have 9 or 10 minutes left by the time you get back to the last one by the altar (or whichever way around you do it). Jettison a relic over the little panel between the 6th pylon and the altar (you may need the external camera to line up the SRV, the panel should be between the middle wheels, but it didn't seem that critical to me) and The Giant Glowing Orb Of Knowledge™ will appear. Target it, scan it, and congratulations on your new Module Blueprint. Oh, and don't forget to collect all Obelisk data, components from the detachable panels, and bit of Sentinel wreckage as you go.

When I got the Guardian FSD Booster months ago it didn't matter which order you went looking for the pylons, but it seems these days you have to go the altar first to get the first pylon, then the others will appear as you get close to them.

Took me a while to work out you have to KEEP shooting the pylons until they activate. And then it turned out I was at a ship blueprint site, and couldn't get the relic to work...

Is it just THAT site? I've always started with whatever I could find first and never had any issues that I'm aware of...
I've always found that you have to get those top two to rise up first before any of the other ones will rise up - I assume that is what Rootsrat means by "activate". Once they are raised you can power them in any order - in fact it makes sense to do the top two last since you are then already at the drop point for the relic.

Ahh, Not sure I remember it that way, but its been about a year and a half now since I've been to a structure...so I probably don't remember correctly...
