Adoption of Minor Factions?

When I started in Elite I found a nice quiet home base and started doing some work for the incumbent minor faction. A few months later and I am now part of an external group which has set up a player group.

Using the minor faction I supported I have drawn many of them into BGS. In short we would like to adopt 'my' faction.

Is this possible? Who would know/allow it?

FD don't formally recognise groups "adopting" factions anymore... though any recognition by FD is only necessary for the creation of a PMF, which you don't want to do.

Beyond that, who would know/allow it? Nobody; that's the beauty of the BGS and you as an independent pilots federation commander; you can support whoever you like, nobody can stop you.

I take your point and any form of adoption would not change what we do with 'our' faction.

My thinking was that it may make life easier if/when we need to interact with other player groups. They would be aware of who we are and how to reach out to us.

As a group leader who deliberately flies under the radar, I can say it doesn't matter a lick, as long as you own your choice.

We do maintain contact with some directly in our face, but honestly, there's a few good threads floating around here/group forums that demonstrate you really aren't missing much by skipping the politics and just playing the game ;)

There's no straightforward in-game way to find out who might be backing any faction, though, adopted or not.

Your best in-game option - which works equally well with PMFs and adopted factions is probably:
- create a squadron and align it to the minor faction (already done?)
- park a fleet carrier in the faction's home system, owned by a squadron member, with some faction-relevant name.
Then anyone checking out the system can see the carrier, if they're on the right platform they find the squadron, see it's attached to the faction, and hopefully go from there. If they're on a different platform, it's still a hint.

Out of game, setting up an Inara page for your squadron and making its association with the faction clear there will help too. (I think there's a way on Inara to say that your squadron specifically backs the faction, rather than just writing it in the description - I'm not sure)

Hey Matt, as others have said, you have already adopted it. We have our "own" Player Faction called the "Imperial Privateers" and to my knowledge it has been adopt by a Xbox group and a group of USA pc guys and girls. (but these are only the ones I know of, there may be more)
They are as much "Imperial Privateers" as we are. To the point where FD only kept the squadron name for us on pc so the Xbox guys can be called that too.
Jamanis has been saying this for years and he is totally right. I might have come up with a name at the start, but "my" faction is no more mine than it is the xbox guys.

My thinking was that it may make life easier if/when we need to interact with other player groups. They would be aware of who we are and how to reach out to us.

If your group approached us through INARA (the best way for groups to start talking IMO) I would take you as legitimate because you are legitimate.

The only difference between an "officially recognized as Adopted" faction and a faction that people simply support unilaterally ("unofficial adoption"), is that FD can (and eventually will, given enough time) drop a PMF into "your" system. They've promised not to do that to PMFs and officially adopted factions, but unofficial adoptions are "fair game".
