Affordable Carriers For All - Hammerhead Class

Yes, with the chance of losing that ship.
How about losing a mini-personal-ship-carrier and all the stored ships?
Well, everything is as usual. A percentage of the cost of all lost ships + the mini aircraft carrier itself. I don't see what the big deal is.

Me? Dishonest?

I'm playing almost every day, making between 20-100m each session depending on what I do, because I switch between activities as normal players likely would. Each session could be between 1-4 hours, maybe a bit more during weekends. I own 8 ships worth about 1bn, and have 1.5bn in cash now. This is on my CMDR save that I wiped end of June - my playstyle isn't min-max grinding, but I wouldn't call that casual either as it did take some significant effort and time to get to that stage.

What you're describing is pretty intense grinding, and you clearly have a skewed idea of what "casual" actually means.

"Two weeks" of "casual" play my Arx.
I said I was casual, not that I did it in two weeks of casual play. I said it takes about 3 months only playing for 1 hr if you're not min maxing. There are far more lucrative ways to make money. Some even afk.

I'm not sure what you're doing to make money so slowly

"as a casual gamer I got a FC in about 2weeks." - that's what you said, and which I found hard to believe.

So you're now saying it's three months of daily play at one hour a day right? Debatable whether that's still casual - most people probably don't play Elite every single day for 12 weeks in a row, but let's assume it still is. You can indeed earn 5bn credits in 90 hours, meaning at least 55m per hour. That requires quite a focus on activities that pay out those kind of credits, and you'd have to avoid anything that doesn't. Sounds like grind to me.

Playing casually, as it were.

Bought Elite just after it came out. My play style isn't money centric. I have a few hundred mil on all of my four accounts (they are spread out across the galaxy) to buy whatever I want, but I don't go trading for weeks on end. Did that to buy my Cutter and hated it. I explore, bop around in an SRV on ice moons, out of the bubble mining, go around grabbing components for engineering, that sort of thing. I did a two+ year galaxy circling exploration mission where my ship didn't dock once. I've also taken huge breaks from the game. If I make a few million bounty hunting or doing missions, I'm happy. I'm not Elite rank in anything.

A small mini-carrier I can park up to act as a mini-base in the middle of nowhere would be perfect for me. Does not need to be persistent. Standard FC's would take too much time away from what I enjoy doing in the game and force me to grind credits ad nauseum. It's a game, not a job. (y)

those were both in the same post.

I mentioned I was a casual gamer. Explained that I was able to get it in two weeks then went on to explain how you can get it playing as casual as possible with an average of 1hr of play per day. That's not playing every day for 12 weeks, just an average. It was also not focusing on high paying activities, It was using money taken from what has to be the most casual way to earn credits. hauling... something you can do in the back ground. Active was of brining in credits pay much higher and you can get an FC even faster.
Playing casually, as it were.
you need to be actively avoiding making money i mean, if you are putting no effort at all into it then you can't be shocked that you aren't going to earn it. but just spending time to get credits isn't outside the realms of casual play

You can make up to 60 million cr/h doing passenger missions in CEOS, I fitted my Anaconda with 10 cabins, no shields, each passenger will pay between 950.000 and 1.8 million (max I've seen), most commonly above 1.0 million when you've done enough for your reputation, it's a one jump mission to Cyrius Athmospheric and a rotation takes about 10 mn, that's how I got mysel my Carrier and get my fuel as welll.

It's a lot faster to make Cr than anything I tried previously, the only problems I had were the autodock sending my ship crashing into the station walls causing some passengers to cancel the mission and having to be careful to the occasional bandito asking you for an assassination; If you dont kick him out before living the station you'll be interdicted and attacked.

If you need materials you'll have to do repetitive farming, that's also grind and it's something that doesn't pay, the best way to do it is to do some then take a break and do something else for a while which is the way I've done it, leaving my Anaconda in CEOS and traveling from and back to Wolf 363 in my Krait Phantom...

It's not the cost of the Carrier that bothered me, not even the cost of upkeep, but its lack of capabilities which limit the potential they have for exploration, I have made some suggestions in this topic...
Fleet carrier upgrade and engineering for long range exploration.

I've been playing since '15 and credits were not my goal. I bought and upgraded ships gradually and had enough money. I had a few hundred million to spare.
But when they announced the price of aircraft carriers, I realized that I will never buy it.
After that, I spent a few months digging asteroids every day and was able to buy one.

Yeah, that's the way to do it, it is of course a problem for the players who plays the least but it is possible to do and I certainly don't regret it despite the costs of purchase and upkeep.

It's gone to the point where I use it as a luxury taxi, I go to systems just to farm materials and it cost me a full tank each time but from my PoV it's worth it, I'm tired having to jump hundred of times to go somewhere then having to find a suitable planet to land for a break., not to mention risks of damages negotiating stars with a ship optimized for long range or risking a crash on a high gravity planet because your thrusters are weak.

With a Carrier you can jump somewhere, then take your Krait and explore a few systems around honking them, or just keep going, you have choces you can't have with a single ship, I went to Colonia and back twice, the only issue are those I mentioned in the topic I opened about their upgrades.

I'd be happy to pay for upgrades and engineering to improve my F.C the same way I improved every one of my ships, I anticipate it will be costlier but it is a Carrier, not a ship, we have to expect a vehicule this size to cost more at every levels...

Guys, I used to own a FC and 10bn in assets. I then wiped my account last year. I know quite well how to make credits, I just wanted to point out that saying it's possible to earn 5bn in two weeks of -casual- play is quite clearly bullox.

Case in point: I just made 200m in the last two hours hauling in the CG. That was pure grinding plain and simple, not casual play I can tell you that.

But why does players who play 4/5h a week would want to buy a Carrier in the first place? If they can't afford the most expensive ship in the game why want to lower the cost of this particular asset?

It's like wanting to buy a 5Bn $ mention and complain that it's too dear while working part time on minimum wage, it's not logical and I don't think developers are taking it seriously, on the other hand, rewarding farming materials at a higher rate isn't a bad idea but to an extend it takes part of the challenge and interest of this game away.

And yes making millions/billions take some dedication but everything in this game does and I can't see any reason why it should change because some people can't bother to go through the same than anyone else before them.

I used to find farming materials a pain in the back, now that I know how to do it I find it a lot easier, but I had to research online first, then travel and try, if people aren't prepared to do this then farming mat shouldn't be made easier for them.

My suggestion for this kind of players...

There is a solution for light Carriers to avoid making worse the issue of access to spots in a system, allowing them to park next to stations, in some case I can't go to some systems because there are no spots available, not a nice thing when you just traveled 22,217.34Ly and spent 5,788 tons of Tritium.

This way, Fleet Carriers would be able to use their usual way to access systems despite the increase in number of Carriers we can expect from a cheaper class, I'm not fundamentaly against the idea of making a Carrier class more afordable but not if Fleet Carriers owners have to pay a price for it, that's not even how democracy works.

Whatever other options & limitations this smaller carrier proposal would have, I think the ability to park in a system without requiring a carrier slot might well be a big incentive for players to switch over.

If you want to haul cargo, use the big (current) carrier, if you are just there to have a convenient respawn point & bring more than one ship to the party use the smaller (proposed) carrier. Could free up some slots :)

Agreed, you just pointed out a solution for those who find hard to keep up with the cost, as for myself I'll keep pushing for the option of upgrading and engineering the Drake-Class Carrier so as to make them a more efficient class for exploration and hauling, we do that for every other asset in the game...

Now that they launched the Colonia Bridge, this solution looks quiet attractive, I just hope we will see the developers having a look at it in the future, for the time being I do with their limitation.

I understand YOU. But with me it's simpler. I made a suggestion at the end of last year to just be able to build a route for the aircraft carrier and that's it.
I have no problem buying or getting a full hold of tritium, but why should I sit in the menu every time to jump him?
A few minutes jump, then 15 rest and then again. As far as I remember it takes about 15 hours to sit like that to the Colony. What's the point in this if you can just set the route and go to sleep ...

You just can't. you need to transfer tritium from cargo to tank and that's one of the reasons why we need to be able to upgrade them, right now, I keep one ship ready to transfer tritium and have to go through the same routine at every jump.

Increasing FSD jump range, transfering fuel (oy fitting a larger tank), fine tuning thrusters, weight etc, all what we can do to increase a ship range should be made possible for a Carrier, to customize them for our personal needs will make them a lot more versatile than they are right now.

Because that carrier brings some very good QoL improvements (the personal cargo in particular) that affect various aspects of the game and how you play it. Having to sell your mining load straightaway instead of stocking it until later, same with pirated goods... These things shouldn't really be locked behind an asset whose price was designed on earning rates from the worst credit fountain period in the game - LTD overlap mining - which since got nerfed.

Alternatively a cheaper, smaller carrier would be just the ticket- aside from the fact I dumped a small fortune into FC cosmetics already in the past and wouldn't be able to use those.

Finally - just a reminder this is a game and not a job, and RL comparisons will never really work in Elite's favour anyways because balancing is so messed up already.

Yes I understand you, but even now I can't make a few jumps from the main tank. At least do that ...
