Alec's best of the forum (and elsewhere) [v2]

Trending: new epic 65km high mountain discovered

Also: added Qohen Leth's list of notable phenomena to the "useful reference lists" section, Cmdr Grimworth's "Deep core mining guide" to "manuals, guides and other stuff for new players" and a nice guide to "Efficient probe mapping" to the "misc' other useful and/or interesting links" section (anyone happen know who created the latter?)

Linked Jonathan Burnage's excellent "How to find asteroids for deep core blasting" thread to the "manuals, guides and other stuff for new players" section.

Added Gaia Rai's truly stunning animated short film "Grim Reaper" to the "screenshots and videos and songs" section.

Here's the video but please head over to the forum thread to give out some appreciation and rep.

Edit: also added Gramer Natzi's excellent "Ast' Cracks: A visual guide for deep core mining" to the "manuals, guides and other stuff for new players" section.

Trending: Distant Worlds now has 5,000 registrations and a live radio station + forum ship of the year and commanders plans for 3305.

Peter Wotherspoon has done his usual absolutely masterful review of Galnet News for the year 3304 which IO strongly urge everyone to check out.

In lieu of a forum thread from Cmdr Wotherspoon himself I'm including his Youtube videos (which have been split into five easily digestible parts) here:

Audio versions of these are also available over here:

Or alternatively you can subscribe to his iTunes podcast version and never miss a single brilliant episode:

P.S. I've also permanently linked this from the "youtube channels, podcasts, etc" section of the main post.

Added ryan_m17's excellent "How to build a PvE Combat Ship" and "How to build a PvP-Capable Ship" guides to the "ships, weapon stat's, combat tips, etc" section.

n.b. I found this over on Reddit (which I don't normally visit) where they're running a Best of 2018 awards thing. Might be grabbing some more stuff I've missed over the next few days.

P.S. I guess you could go cast another vote for ryan in the "Best helpful commander" category ... unless you can think of anyone else who deserves it?

Ryan's write-ups are indeed excellent. He is however SDC, which is an automatic flag for not trusted. I remember his write-ups being excellent during the lead-up to the Salomé event too.

The articles recommend http://edshipyard.net/ which is run by Harry Potter (yes, that Harry Potter). That too is an automatic flag for not trusted.

Whether commanders wish to entrust their stats to that site is up to them. I will only say that the EDCD do not sanction that site, and regard it as legally in violation of the licence of http://www.edshipyard.com/, and for that reason have banned Harry Potter from their Discord server.

Your choice.

Well, if the guides are good then the guides are good I guess. Thanks for the heads up tho', always good to know where information is coming from. In this case being SDC does at least suggest he knows what he's talking about when writing combat guides!

The real question, is do you trust SDC with knowing what players are using specific ship setups, what web browser you have and where you are in the world geographically? That they can start making advertising revenue from you?

The "new" edshipyard.net only has minimal visual changes so as to make users believe it's the same old trusted site. If this new one starts prompting for ED credentials then many will not notice or know of the owners of this version.

Be very careful.

Yeah, only really talking about the two guides here. I'm in no way vouching for edshipyard.net - in the main post here I list edshipyard.com and coriolis.edcd.io. Sheesh, I make one brief visit to reddit and it seems I've come back with a small bit of dog mess on the bottom of my shoe. Sorry about the smell folks, I expect it'll clear in a day or two.
