HOW TO FIND THESE ALIEN WRECKS: EXPLANATION & CALCULATIONS (Props to CMDRs Bioann, Wace for maths, Vall who discovered the Beam... and ME that keeps track of all this mess, god...)

The Unknown Link seems to be a tool to find planets with Wrecks, just play the correct Unknown Device Scan Sound at it, and it will point a beam at the Planet/Settlement.

HOW IT WORKS:
- YOU NEED AT LEAST A KNOWN SITE TO FIND THE OTHERS, IT'S LIKE A CHAIN.
- Let's Say you go to a Site: let's call it Site A.
- You Activate the Device inside the central chamber with your Unknown Probe, Unknown Artifact and Unknown Link.
- You then scan the Device and you get 3 Messages Back.
- Each Message represents a different System.
- You go into Space jettison your UL, you place your ship in front of the "dish" and play one of the Messages.
- You get an Answer in the form of a chittering sound with sequences of high and low notes in segments of three, that encode the Coordinates for a new site. Take note of what Message you used.
- You decipher this chittering sound using the method described below.
- You go to the System whose name you decoded from the sound.
- You play the Message to your UL again.
- Your UL will now "point" to the right planet (and to the right location on that planet when dropped near).

CMDR Wace made a calculator, where you put the Hi Low triplets, and get the canditate systems ;)

The transmission consists of high and low notes in segments of three separated by warbles and delays. The first number in the video would be...

Where 'H' stands for a high frequency note and 'L' for a low frequency note. Each high frequency note represents binary 0 and low frequency note represents 1. This gives the following binary numbers:

Throwing these in any binary to decimal converter (first result on google: http://www.binaryhexconverter.com/bi...imal-converter) should give the following decimal representation.


> 18 <warble> 125


The final part to the decoding is to realize that the <warble> stands in for a division, yielding the 18 / 125 fraction.


There's three different transmission so this gives us the following fractions:


Code:
I: 157/1000 31/1000 24/25 or in decimal 0.157 0.031 0.960
II: 18/125 31/1000 189/200 or in decimal 0.144 0.031 0.945
III: 151/1000 1/25 937/1000 or in decimal 0.151 0.040 0.937
These were hypothesized to represent distances from unknown systems to specific reference systems, as in... system I would be 0.157 units from reference 1, 0.031 units from reference 2, 0.960 units from reference 3. We made the following educated assumptions:


- The unit of distance is the same that the Unknown Probe used: 871.018 Ly (distance between Merope and Col 70 Sector FY-N c21-3).
- Reference 1 is Merope.
- Reference 2 is HIP 14909.
- Reference 3 is Col 70 Sector FY-N C21-3.


So for system I we'd be trying to find a system that is...


- 871.018 * 0.157 light years from Merope
- 871.018 * 0.031 light years from HIP 14909
- 871.018 * 0.960 light years from Col 70 Sector FY-N c21-3


We can come up with good match for systems I and III but the numbers representing system II don't have a likely candidate that I've found.


My brute force approach for finding the final list of systems was to use the EDDB data set to find all the systems near Merope and check which ones of these are within the required distances of the reference systems. The fastest way for this is to download the systems data set from eddb or edsm (https://eddb.io/api), load it up in a proper database - I used MongoDB but an SQL database should work just fine and query it given the conditions. Downside with this approach is that it misses any system which isn't mapped in EDSM.

FOOD FOR THOUGHTS (personal theory):
Given the name of this settlements "Large Wreckage Sites" (from UL description), we could assume that these are ships as well: motherships to be precise.

The central chamber, is simply its NAVIGATION deck, the control room.
In fact, after activation, it shows a NAVIGATION MAP...

So, assuming they are Thargoid motherships wrecked by the Mycoid Virus, they are still trying to (auto?) repair themselves, and sending probes, signals, and more, to be found by their "parents" ;)

REMEMBER?
WHAT WE FOUGHT IN THE FIRST WAR WAS JUST A THARGOID SCOUTING PARTY, WE ARE LOOKING AT THEM NOW.
Imagine what will come to rescue them. And DB said THEY are very angry with the Federation... I may guess the reason why...




NEW MEGASHIP FOUND!
It's prof. Melville's:

CMDR Synjorai of Canonn discovered Professor Melville's mega ship in Col 173 Sector LJ-F C12-0!
The mega ship's name is The Cete.
There's been found several ruins in the system as well - counting 5 at the time of posting. Seems like this might have been part of the original way to find the ruins.

A brief history of what has happened so far (essential reading for background and context):
1) Guardians content came as part of release 2.2

2) The first site was found via triangulation from a trailer video – there are two key point from this:
a) It was a great piece of work.
b) Consequently FD’s plan for how we would find the ruins was completely skipped and we never found out how we were supposed to find them in game.​

3) Lots of work and investigation was done into the first site. Most of these areas of investigation are still open.

4) A CG ran with players scanning the obelisks to collect ancient data types (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Epsilon)

5) With release 2.2.03, the first site was changed to a revised model and the Ram Tah mission was released.

6) It was found that the Ram Tah mission couldn’t be completed at the first site and the focus went to finding more sites.

7) Several Galnet articles provided locations for other sites.

8) A further site was discovered via triangulation from a trailer and enabled the mission to be completed in Open – this was as a result of a bug in open mode which gave extra scan data then should have been accessible at the sites.

9) With the first completion of the Ram Tah mission the sites become visible on scanners when within 1,000ls, and more sites were discovered.

10) With release 2.3 changes were made to the active obelisks and available data at the sites and the cannon have been working to map these out as they are in 2.3.

Open areas of investigation

There is a huge amount of Guardians content in game, much of which is still unsolved. There are things which are definitely there, which have been worked on and are unsolved, and there are other things which have been hinted at and/or are open questions.

Things that are there and unsolved include:
• Words & phrases which could be found hidden in audio from around the original site
• 'Barcodes' in the spectrograms of the audio from the obelisks
• The glyphs (The triangular displays/patterns on the obelisks, the ancient relic, and the base of the relic towers).
• An object that is inside the ancient relics
• Binary or Trinary coding in the alignment of obelisks in rows
• Completing the Ram Tah mission in solo mode >> Since version 2.3.10 the mission is completely solvable in SOLO!

Finding Melville's ship
On 10th Feb 3303 a Galnet article was published containing the logs of one of the crew from an expedition into Guardian space led by a Professor Melville. The last section of this is an appeal for rescue:

"I'm transmitting these records in the hope that someone finds them and comes to our rescue. But the chances of that are slim."

It's unknown if the ship is actually present and discoverable in game but the message certainly indicates a possibility that it is.

Galactic News: Intriguing Expedition Record Surfaces
10 FEB 3303
A curious record has surfaced, detailing an apparently clandestine expedition to find relics from the lost civilisation known as the Guardians.

The record, which takes the form of a series of personal logs, indicates that the expedition was led by one Professor Melville, an authority on xeno-biology who disappeared a few months ago.

The record has attracted a considerable amount of attention, and is reprinted in full below.

13th January 3303

"I'm not just going to sit here while that jumped-up mechanic Ram Tah spoon-feeds us information."

That's what Professor Melville said. He wanted to know more about the Guardians – maybe even figure out where they came from. So off we went, with little to go on beyond the professor's belief that there were more ruins out there.

He claims to have information that will help us find more sites, but he's keeping it close to his chest. Only he and the pilot know where we're going. It's like he's afraid someone will take credit for his discovery. We've been scanning lifeless planetoids for days, eyeballing the ground for locations.

He keeps reciting the same little speech: "Xeno-achaeology has moved on. The days of exploring the outer reaches, only occasionally finding something of value, are behind us. I have found the key."

But I'm not an archaeologist. Professor Melville is just a means to an end. I signed up for the money.

24th January 3303

We received an update today – apparently Ram Tah has found some new sites. Melville scoffed when he heard the news. "Scraps from an amateur," he said. "We'll find the real secrets. Trust me."

Trust. That's an interesting thing. Why should we trust someone who doesn't trust us? Well, maybe he has reason not to: I took a look at his records while he was talking to the pilot. I don't like being kept in the dark.

Melville thinks there could be hundreds of sites out there. His hypothesis is that the Guardians occupied an area of space similar in size to that currently inhabited by humans, but that for some reason they were forced to migrate. He believes he can find that region of space and the Guardians' point of origin.

The Guardians could well have had a huge civilisation, with hundreds of sites – maybe thousands – in this part of space. The similarities across different sites are comparable to the way we reuse certain structures. After all, how many Coriolis stations are there in the galaxy?

2nd February 3303

Melville thinks the Synuefe XR-H D11-102 system represents some kind of end point or 'last colony'. Beyond that, the sites appear in clusters, with the number of sites in each cluster getting increasingly larger. We discovered a cluster of sites only a few days ago before finding a location with an entirely unique layout. So far we've found three sites in each of the following systems: Synuefe LY-I b42-2, Synuefe NL-N c23-4 and Synuefe TP-F b44-0.

There are basically three different types of site, most of which have a different codex layout. Melville thinks that each type of site fulfilled a different function. He also thinks the Guardians were the dominant species in this region of space. But he's not content with this discovery. He wants to keep going.

Are we ever going back to turn back?

This isn't a research vessel anymore – it's a prison. All means of communicating with the rest of the galaxy have been disabled. Melville has taken control of ship. His obsession has doomed us all.

I'm transmitting these records in the hope that someone finds them and comes to our rescue. But the chances of that are slim.

Many "Alien" artifacts can be found on the site:
There are 6 objects: An Ancient Relic, Urn, Orb, Casket, Tablet and Totem. They can be sold to markets.
Along with 5 Data Scan Types: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Epsilon, each with a different rarity mark.
The Data scan types are not consistent with the Obelisks: they are random.
The Ancient Relic is VERY SIMILAR to the lighten part on the Obelisks.

We can assume these to be Engineer Data, needed for some "Alien-like" upgrade to come ;)

Pattern Alpha Desc: Data captured from obelisks found at ancient ruins. This data pattern is distinctive and has been designated as 'Pattern Alpha'. There are many theories as to what this data might represent. Com Log: Ancient Biological Data

SECOND STEP: CHECK DATA AND PROPOSE HYPOTHESIS:
With your reports, a database is being built. Please check the results on it and propose your ideas! Also if you believe we should collect any extra data or whatever, please let me know and it will be added.

THIRD STEP: PROVE OR DISPROVE HYPOTHESIS:
Head again to the database and check the theories in the label "Findings so far". Any hypothesis are collected then and a check up process is proposed. Please do so and inform us, either here or through a comment in the Spreadsheet, if you did and the results.

A first analysis, from acquired data!
First findings indicate that every hyperdicted commander has been scanned by a UA, and 33% were both scanned by a UA and EMP'd by a UP

Hypothesis:
The UA have "marked" us somehow.
Conflicts:
I started monitoring this point halfway of the survey. So far, from 51 responses just 28 did have the option to answer this. However, all of them reported to have been scanned by a UA.

This may be a confirmation BIAS: People want to get hyperdicted, so they get a UA to do so.

79.2% of the cmdrs were carrying a UA in the hold. 18.4% were carrying a UP

Hypothesis:
Carrying UAs may increase chances of being interdicted.
There are a few reports that honking a UP and carrying it will automatically grant a hyperdiction.

Conflicts:
Once again, this may be a confirmation bias.
Cmdr Miic tested honking a UP outside of the bubble, 5kLY away. No hyperdiction. Until we have more tests, we cannot confirm that honking a UP will grant a hyperdiction.

There are at least 2 confirmed reports of hyperdictions outside of the UA shell, at about 250LY from Merope

Hypothesis:
Expanding activity of the aliens.

Conflicts/b]:
Too few reports to actually make any asumption or establish a pattern.

45% of interdicted ships were ASP explorer. 27.5% were Anacondas.

Hypothesis:
Scientists like ASP explorers, and some of them are rich s able to pay and fly an Anaconda. Yes, I am jealous.


There are no obvious preferences on systems where hyperdictions happened

Request: It would be interesting if someone could make a 3d map with the hyperdiction report. We may narrow an "alien activity zone" that way.

Details:
-Alien ship hyperdicts you during a jump between two systems: it pulls you out of witchspace.

-Alien ship disables your ship completely, scans your ship, then proceeds to jump away.

-Does not jump like we do. Almost appears to open a hole in front of itself before jumping (Wormhole?!). Wake scanning it gives you data. As well as scanning the ship. You do not get a destination from the wake, however. Our theory at the moment is that the ship simply returns to "normal space" for it. Which is what we call witchspace.

-So far these hyperdictions are occurring inside the UA shell.
EDIT: and now even OUTSIDE!

-The few "brave" CMDRs who have attempted shooting the ship, have done no damage to it, and it completely disregarded them. Let's hope this doesn't provoke war in the future.

Interdiction:
Initial reports indicate having a UA on board helps establish an interdiction but it isn't necessary.
Drops you in the same system at random distances away from the main star
Happens randomly with no real indication of what can trigger it.

Reaction:

Unknown Artifact : No noticeable change in interdiction sequence of events
Meta Alloys: No noticeable change in interdiction sequence of events
Unknown Probe: Have yet to get confirmation from anyone about having one while being interdicted and the result of either A: having it in your hold or B: jettisoning it and using your discovery scanner to activate

What we know:

The ship is extremely large, much larger than any piloted ship in game
It seems to be scanning for something
It doesn't seem hostile
Has the ability to pull us out of witch space and has a similar EMP effect as the Unknown Probe
It's features resemble that of the UA's, UP's and barnacles so it's safe to say they are somehow related
Shooting it does nothing
The wake it leaves after jumping comes up as unidentifiable
It gives us 2 different types of unknown data in our data collection of materials
From initial reports the direction it lines up with after it jumps seems to face towards a far off distant other galaxy when looking at the background, but still compiling data to confirm this as it happens at different locations.
The debug camera is inactive while this event occurs, likely due to it happening while in witch space which auto disables the debug camera
The christmas tree bobble heads lights turn off when it's "EMP" effect activates.

-Spectrograms of the noise the ship makes so far have been inconclusive.

THE FORMIDINE RIFT, CONFLUX & HAWKING'S GAP CG'S BEACONS
Thanks to this Community Goal, many unregistered Beacons were found in these three controversial and remote areas of the Galaxy (check the Trello Board for a complete list).

All these Beacons transmit encrypted messages, that were later decoded using a substitution Cypher, and the word EXODUS as a key. They all talk of some "Dynasty" expedition, and mention some "Rally points". The areas are being checked for other Beacons, and the surrounding Planets are being scoured.
Later, a Galnet article showed up, talking about the Metadrive affair, directly mentioning some "exodus documents" that have gone missing.

My thoughts:
A defunct company called METADRIVE, specialized in new generation FSD research, whose research attracted the interest of other big players (Sirius corp. above all).
From the last Galnet article, we now know that a somehow "secret" project/research/trip/expedition called EXODUS, exists.

EXODUS meaning: A departure of a large number of people. Not mentioning the Bible's book.

Then, on the other side of the Galaxy, we find mysterious listening posts, speaking about a DYNASTY, and some rally points: to decrypt them, the word EXODUS is needed.

ABANDONED RESEARCH FACILITY 5592
Hi CMDR's i found this research base in star system: HR 5991 after scanning some listening posts and triangulate the positione.
It is located on the second moon of first planet (HR 5991 1b) lat 33.47, long -2.17.
You can find there some damaged abondoned base. There is data link there with some corrupted data and also the strange message:
Part 1: It was there a few days ago I swear. Doctor Lewis said I'm lucky ot to be fired for dragging them all out here. But it was right here, the proof that they exist. Someone must be messing with me . There is no way taht much data can be corrupted without leaving a trace. This can't be right. There seems to be a signal hidden in the corrupted data. I didn't see it before, and if the data hadn't been ruined I mignt never have seen it...
Part 2: I found It, they'll all think I'm crazy but I found it. It's definitely not a natural signal or background noise. I've run evey test I can thinik of and they all confirm it's not natural or humain in origin. ..

Conclusions

There is a PoI near Takurua 1. Ships have been seen entering the area and disappearing without low wakes. Upon inspection, three ships were seen in the PoI, apparently leaving the area. One ship (scans revealed it to be a Sirius Corporation vessel) spoke to others referencing the escape. Observer was then fired-upon (NPCs do so love their cargo).

Given the nature of the decoded messages, a third party is suggested. This tentatively rules-out Sirius Corporation as the operators of the numbers beacons. The planet Takurua 1 may be harbouring a prison facility. Further investigation is required.

Closing Thoughts

We have a pickle on our hands here. Who the hell is operating these beacons, and for what purpose? Are they human? Alien? We've tossed these ideas around and both seem to have merit. The latter possibility is the one I find most disturbing, given that it implies said aliens would have intimate knowledge of our technology, culture, and language.

For those looking to hunt these beacons: I have no easy answers. From the above data, we can conclude that presence of a Herald: article at stations in a system is not a guarantee that there is a numbers beacon in the system, and neither is the opposite true. So here is my general advice to all Canonn members, and this is intended to be passed-on to explorers and player groups of all stripes:

  1. Keep your "Points of Interest" filter on in your navigation computer, and keep an eye out for any more "Unregistered Comms Beacon" PoIs. If you find one, report it to Canonn, and if you have the time and are willing to wait, sit at the beacon and wait for a transmission. Be sure to have some way of transcribing the message, or be recording audio. Preferably both. (Video is useful as a "just in case" but given the very long listening times, audio is more practical.) Please check the Trello board's Numbers Beacons list to see examples of what data is being collected.
  2. Unregistered Comms Beacons will only be visible on your nav computer within 1,000Ls of your current position. So far, all of them have been found orbiting planets and moons.
  3. While at stations, check news articles for an article with a title in the format of "The <system name> Herald:". This will likely contain ciphertext in NATO phonetic code. Record this and report it to Canonn for verification and key cipher testing. Same advice about checking the board to see what data is being collected applies.
  4. Data is being actively collected, verified, collated, and passed through hamster-wheel-computers on the #chat_science channel of Canonn's Discord server. Please drop us a line there, as well as here in the threadnaught, should you find anything more of value.

CMDRs found some encoded messages in some recent promotional video clips, it was eventually decoded as:
"We've found something, something incredible. Something the whole galaxy will want to see. The truth. We could show it to you. that wouldn't be much fun so instead we're going to play a little game. To find us, look for a bounty hunter." - "to find more clues, you'll need pre-logistics support in a system with one star, two belts, three rings, and enough radiation to turn you green. The hunt begins on the 28th."

Q: So... who is the bounty hunter?

CMDR's found out that this was at PRE Logistics Gamma, at Pleiades IH-V c2-5
Everyone in the community immediately thought "OMG THARGOIDS" and other such mega-hype, which is fair because there has been a TON of rumors lately, and what with a lot of videos posted showing glowing green stuff, and also what people think is some crashed alien ship! Strange noises heard, the whole UA/UP mystery which is ongoing... However, many did say that we should temper our expectations because this might be quite a long "hunt" and probably not directly related to Thargoids.

EDIT sidenote: /u/Astrovenator mentions The faction which controls the PRE logistics support stations is the "Pleiades Resource Enterprise"

Upon arrival to PRE Logistics Gamma, CMDR's found a trail messages in the local station herald news, something to note is that this was even before the 28th... On the 28th though more clues have been coming in and there seems to be some kind of hunt ongoing. Here is the clue trail:

PRE Logics Support Gamma (Q. Why this station to start with, anyway?):
"One of seven, mother of the messenger and pursued by the giant huntsman, you will find more at the black glass."
DECODED MESSAGE: THE RED TRADER WAS CARRYING FISH DURING THE INCIDENT
Riddle Answer: Maia (Seven sisters, Maia is the mother, huntsman is Orion, black glass is Obsidian)
Q. Why does it mention Orion?
This lead to the next station... and so forth:

Cooper Research Centre (Barrel Trade Investigations, Q. What exactly is researched here?): "The first of three water worlds is Z place to research the next clue. The last of my name is sixth but worth seven."
Decoded message: A Cobra is due to arrive at 21.00
Answer: Pleiades Sector HR-W d1-57 (Zeta … Z - zeta is sixth in the Greek alphabet but worth seven, because there used to be a different sixth letter called vau, i.e. zeta used to be the seventh letter worth seven)

Meanwhile, Military activity around Merope regions have been ramping up dramatically as there is an escalation between major powers over meta-alloys. Meta alloys are found on Barnacles, the strange alien objects found on Merope 5C and other places in the area. Q: As far as I know, UP convoys have only been found by Elite pilots or wings of several pilots.
I think spawn rates are affected by the USS difficulty scaling. In other words, searching alone without at least one Elite rank may be quite futile.

The convoys are pretty rare, they're not the best way to find the Unknown Probes though.

The barnacles are another clue in the big puzzle, not the end of the puzzle. There is still no logical reason to focus the barnacle search in Merope. Every landable planet in the Pleiades has just as much chance of containing the hand placed fixed POI as the planets in Merope, and Merope has already been searched the most.

The leaders of the galaxy's major powers have responded to the discovery of a mysterious shipwreck in the Pleiades Sector AB-W B2-4 system.

Freelance Report: Mysterious Wreck could be an Artefact of the Past - 01/09/3302
The discovery of what appears to be the remains of a non-human spacecraft has sent ripples of fear and curiosity through the galaxy.


"Many are speculating that this is evidence of recent Thargoid activity," said Professor Steven Eisler of the Okinura Xenobiology Institute, "but it's more likely that the wreckage dates from our first encounters with the Thargoids."


"What I find disturbing are the messages and clues that led to this xeno-archaeological find. Someone is deliberately preying on mankind's fear of the unknown, and they need to be held accountable for their actions."

Galactic News: Mysterious Wreckage Discovered - 31/08/3302
A pair of independent pilots by the names of Noctrach and Ihazevich has discovered the remains of what appears to be a starship on planet 9a of the Pleiades Sector AB-W B2-4 system. The discovery represents the culmination of a galaxy-wide hunt coordinated by the 'Granger Gang' – a band of miscreants led by the smuggler and bounty hunter Otto Granger.


The event began with a cryptic message delivered by Granger to news feeds throughout the galaxy. This was followed by a series of enigmatic clues, inserted into news channels at a number of starports.


Solving these clues led pilots to the three members of the Granger Gang: Otto Granger, Mahina Dillon and Logan Khol. When confronted, Granger and his companions claimed to have made a discovery of profound importance, but they refused to reveal the nature or location of this discovery.


Instead, each member of the gang said they would issue a request for a specific commodity, promising to reveal further information if they received what they asked for. Logan Khol's subsequent request for narcotics was enthusiastically received by the galactic community, and when his targets were met, a further clue was released:


"The latitude was -26 and it was a cold moon in the Pleiades sector with the letters 'AB' in its name."


Although the Granger Gang planned to release further clues, they were quickly rendered redundant. Within hours of Khol releasing his information to the public, Commanders Noctrach and Ihazevich discovered the mysterious wreckage.


Commentators throughout the galaxy have been quick to offer their opinions on this remarkable discovery.


"I'm familiar with every starship design of the past fifty years, and most of the older ones, too," said Augustus Sym, an Imperial veteran and former test pilot based in the Achenar system, "and I've never seen anything like it. There's no doubt in my mind – that is an alien ship."


Others have adopted a more cautious stance, while acknowledging that the find could be significant. Professor Ishmael Palin, a leading authority on xeno-biological research, said:


"I have always been open to the possibility of intelligent non-human life, and this wreck may indeed be an alien vessel. But I will withhold judgement until further evidence is released, or at least until I have an opportunity to inspect the site myself!"

Aliens Kidnapped the President - 14/08/3301
The spectre of President Halsey’s disappearance in Starship One refuses to die down. Despite the findings of the official report some claim that the matter is far from closed. One such person is self-proclaimed conspiracy expert Ricardo Bentonio on his investigative show ‘The Hidden World’:

“They took her for their own purposes. Not the lizard people from Andromeda, that’s the Imperial Dynasty. She’s been taken somewhere different.”

Federal Navy officials refused to comment on this allegation. One Congressman was overheard joking “Does anyone listen to that loon’s shows? Except his precious lizard people from Andromeda, of course!”
Soontill Relics Test Results Queried - 18/05/3301
As further alien artefacts claiming to be from Soontill are being sold on the open market, the results of the initial scientific tests have been revealed.


“We were looking for key markers,” explains Chief Xeno-Chemist Lyran Betar. “Elemental make up, crystalline structure, anything that indicates it could have originated from human hand.”


And the results? Inconclusive. The research team’s results clearly state that no known human technology could have created the relics, yet they do not quite align with known Thargoid materials. Whatever they are, they are indeed very old, with isotopic dating indicating that they could well be tens of thousands of years old.


Jean Molyneaux, a historian from France, Earth, suggests we look back at our own past to determine the home of these relics. “Imagine an alien travelling back two thousand years into mankind’s past. The varied culture, arts and building materials of the Aztecs, Greeks, the Shang dynasty, what have you, the alien could think they were all different species, if that was his way of thinking…”


The community seems wary of awarding these artefacts any title yet, given the fifty years of false hopes since Soontill was first mentioned by the Thargoids. However, reports indicate that these relics have now arrived at labs on both Mars and Capitol for further testing, and with any luck, we may soon finally agree on what these relics are, or are not.

Soontill is back in the news this week as fresh rumours have surfaced of alien items hitting the market in Ngurii.

It's been nearly two decades since Gallagher Restoration's auction of Soontill relics was discovered to be merely an outrageous publicity stunt. Although many high profile individuals were left red faced after the Phekda auction, most notably the band Jjagged Bbanner, it seems people still want to believe in the Thargoid legend. Indeed, several familiar names have already come forward enquiring about the new finds.

What gives the latest rumours more credence than previous claims is the fact that the source of the alien items is not just one individual or one group, but several different lone wolf pilots.

THE UNKNOWN PROBE (UP)

The Unknown Probes are a newly discovered Commodity.
They share many similarities with the UA, down to the general texture and glowing parts, so we can assume they are created by the same race. They do not have the 'canisters' section present on UAs, and they glow a deep orange-red. They point to Merope 5C, the planet where Barnacles were first found.
They have been firstly spotted in a Military Convoy in a Convoy Dispersal Pattern USS (Threat 4), in Ross 47. Later they have been found in other surrounding systems.
In each convoy, the escort composition may vary, but the UP is always carried by a Python. The Convoy seem to consistently carry Meta Alloys and Reactive armor as well. There's an interesting comms chatter, then the Convoy is attacked by some unknown ships, and a battle takes place.
The sound of the UP is similar to the UA's: it is composed by sequences of two different Howls, and many purrs between them. While the UA had morse code hidden between the Howls, the UP apparently doesn't.
Later, they've been found floating around Ammonia Worlds, in Degraded Emission [Threat 2] (post 2.2 patch).

THE UP TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN DECODED

In three steps:
CMDR Muetdhiver
CMDR Muetdhiver again (officially an Hero!)
CMDR Wace (a true math genius, worth the Nobel Prize: the full math behind the discovery!)

The UP is transmitting the closest planet's data, using as unit of measure Merope 5c planet's data themselves.
It seems Merope 5c has some very important meaning for THEM.

From the last decoded section a Permitted System was triangulated by CMDR Wace and his MatheMagic:
Col 70 Sector FY-N c21-3
Could we assume this could be THEIR origin/homeworld?

And here what I think is the best explanation for the drawing in the UP sonogram so far:
The spectrogram, as the given hints suggested, is in fact a key for the data stream we get from the UP, given that both come from the UP, and the diagram provides context for the data that we brute-forced.

All of the following, paired with the fact the the UP points to Merope 5c (the unit of measure), should have helped us to understand the transmission, that we brute-forced instead.

  • The two top glyphs (-|- -||): are two examples for the reader to understand how the data in the transmission are presented: 3 bit binary Octals. (010 011).
  • Top left: atmosphere (a shell on a planet's surface = atmosphere)
  • Top right: temperature (temperature on a planet depends on the star that it's heating it: something radiating onto a planet suggests heat)
  • Bottom left: gravity (two lines representing two objects falling at the same rate to the surface, and converging on the planet's center of mass)
  • Bottom right: radius (one line from the centre of the body to the surface)
  • The two bottom glyphs (|- - - -|): a distance. Not related to planetary characteristics, nor to the two top glyphs, as they have different spacing, they are an obvious diagram for a length instead. In our case the distance from Col 70 Sector FY-N c21-3, that was in fact the last decoded section of the transmission.

WHAT WE'VE LEARNED SO FAR ABOUT THE WHOLE MYSTERY:
  1. The UP transmit in octal, i.e. base 8. The AB wreck has 8 fold symmetry. IMO there is probably a link with the thargoids.
  2. We know that there is a reciever of some kind on Merope 5c for the transmissions, likely thargoid. It has yet to be located.
  3. We know that the UP is looking for ammonia (very likely) and that it's makers are based on ammonia chemistery (likely). Thargoids are amonnia based life.
  4. There is something related to the UP in the Col 70 sector. No way to know what till the lock is lifted. Since it's UP realted, and UP is likely thargoid related, it might be thargoids.
  5. The AB Wreck and the UP where both found in the UA shell. I find it likely that they are related somehow.
  6. It is very likely the the UA and UP where made by the same makers (Likely thargoid related). They have similar design, and emit similar chirps.
  7. The AB wreck look quite similar to the UA/UP in its organic structure. It is possible that they where made by the same race.
  8. The barnacles are related to nebulas, we don't know why. They look different than the UA/UP, more a wildlife thing than designed.
  9. The UP/UA have only been found in the pleiades, but not in other nebulas. Link with the UA/UP is unclear.
  10. What happens in the pleiades is somehow linked to the formidine rift mystery, very likely.
  11. From the Formidine rift stuff, we have "And they thought thargoids where trouble". So, it's quite likely that there are thargoids and something else.
THE FULL STORY:
After several weeks of frustrating stalemate, researchers at the Cannon Interstellar Research Group have made a flurry of breakthroughs in their research of the Unknown Probe ("UP").

The stalemate had been caused by the extremely rare supply of UPs for researchers to work with, since the only known source was, according to our source, "disreputable". Cmdr Ilo broke this barrier at 3:28am 16 Aug by discovering a UP floating in an "Unknown anomaly" signal source in close proximity to an ammonia world, inside what is referred to as "the UA shell" (a sphere of locations where Unknown Artefacts can be found).

Over the next 24 hours, many other researchers had acquired UPs, and then CMDR MyklAtrum discovered a new signal from the UP, which could be heard by placing your ship on the Merope 5C side of the UP. (The group had previously discovered that the UP always aligns itself towards that planet.)

Shortly after that, CMDR Gaplant noticed a pattern of binary triplets in the new signal which CMDR Han_Zen transcribed as 5 sections of binary (the triplets indicating octal), with separators, with 4 of those having binary prefixes matching the binary found in the spectrogram of the sound produced by the UP after being 'honked' with any discovery scanner (previously discovered by CMDR Rizal).

Then in an astonishing feat of ingenuity CMDR Muetdhiver worked out that when the pair of numbers from each section were used as a numerator and a denominator, yielding a fraction, and for one of the sets, it's value matched the gravity of the planet where the UP was, relative to the gravity of Merope 5C. This was quickly followed by him also revealing that the other values represented the relative radius and surface temperature; and that the 4th sequence represented analysis of the planets atmospheric content, expressed using atomic element numbers.

The value without the prefix was thought to be the relative distance from a reference planet (with 1 representing the distance of Merope 5C). CMDR Wace used this to triangulate the position of the reference system as "Col 70 Sector FY-N c21-3" and reported that the system was inaccessible

  1. Free Floaters UP are found near ammonia worlds close to the Pleiades nebula. It is found in a Threat level 2 anomaly SS. The Spawn rate is low, count 1h to get one.
  2. They emit a tight beam transmission to merope 5c. To hear it you have to be straight between the UP head and merope. Like : oO --- Ship --- Merope

The transmission :


  1. It is made of five blocks, separated by the whale sounds.
  2. The first four blocks are made of a pair of two subblocks. They sound like an old printer.
  3. The last block is quite longer and made of nine subblocks.
  4. Blocks #2 to #5 have a "header" made of a single sound, going from 1 to 4. (like the drawing)

Here is the transcription from a recording earlier this morning. kudos for the transcription work of kloopy, digital dan and han zen.

Analysis :


  • The first thing that appears is that there are repeating instances of 1000, 250, 200, 125. my guess was that this was not chance and that going octal => decimal was right.
  • Also, to me it made sense if the numbers in the first four blocks where : numerator # denominator as dividing by 1000,250,200,125 is a good way of getting rational numbers :) and I though it was measuring the planet somehow.
  • Here is the trick part : it would be fair to assume that the aliens don't use our units. So they got to use an obvious one => merope 5c.

Lets toy with it :


  1. starts with no header, 979/1000 = 0.979
  2. starts with 1 as header, 153/250 = 0.612
  3. starts with 2 as header, 941/200 = 4.705
  4. starts with 3 as header, 1153/200 = 5.765
  5. starts with 4 135 "/" 588.371 82 "/" 50.312 136 "/" 69.859**

** it is not clear to me if the #X denominator should apply to both previous sub-blocks, or only the one just before.

Now, here are the characteristic of merope 5c : Radius = 1478 [km], Surf. Temp. = 297 [K], Gravity = 0.18 g, Orbit T = 6.6 [dy], 5085 [ls] from arrival.

Here are the caracteristic of Pleiades Sector KC-U b3-1 8 : Radius = 8518 [km], Surf. Temp. = 182 [K], Gravity = 0.86 g, Orbit T = 196.4 [dy], 223 [ls] from arrival.

If we do the ratios body X/merope 5c : Radius = 5.763, Surf. Temp. = 0.612[8], gravity = 4.77, Orbit T = 29.76, Dist from arrival = 22.8

As one can see, the blocks with the #1,#2 and #3 headers fit rather nicely (not perfectly, but too good to be fat chance)

What is not known :
The first line : could be the probe health at the transmission start, or something else. It is not the distance to sol as thought previously as the ratio was done in the wrong order.
The last block with header #4 : so far no good theory has been proposed (that I know of).

Test to do :
Recordings at least with an other ammonia world to check the whole thing, and also check for fixed part in the message.

BARNACLES AND META-ALLOYS

In-game description:
Meta-alloys have a complex lattice structure with large internal voids. They are cellular in nature, and formed organically. They are incredibly strong - much stronger than foamed aluminium for example. Many elements form the structure so technically they are alloys, but the composition is different in different parts of the cell walls for strength. They are good thermal insulators, and have a high melting point, but if they are melted they lose all their special properties and become a conventional alloy. They are easily machined, but as yet cannot be manufactured, only found in space. They are associated with recently discovered alien entities nicknamed 'Large Barnacles' by interstellar explorers. These appear to be common in certain parts of space, although no-one is certain why. This material has been heralded as the next step in materials technology. It is ultra-light and stronger and more versatile than most commercially available alloys.

The spikes are a wonderful mashup of visual design elements : texture like mussels growing on a worn pier support -

- but when you see the 'mussels' up close, they're not sea creatures at all, they're fruits!
The 'unripe' ones look like cocoa pods growing from a tree trunk, but as they ripen, they look more like cape gooseberries (physalis) wating to open.

It's clear the metal-bearing pods ripen as the 'tree' grows, and the ripe pod contains meta-alloys.

Which leaves the barnacle - what is its purpose?
I believe it's a combination of hopper and control centre. First, the barnacle is planted, then it causes trees to sprout around it. The trees mine metals, refine them, then combine them in the fruit pods.

Finally, the barnacle collects the ripe meta-alloy fruits and stores them in the armoured central structure, waiting for the farmer to return and collect the harvest.

BARNACLE FACTS

Obsidian Ant's video about the Barnacles:

  • According to MB, they have a preference for Nebulae.
    A local Nebulae map:
  • They are being found close to crashed ships sites.
  • They seem to prefer those standing-out colored area (yellow, green, red) common on some planets (Mineral deposits?).

  • So far, They seem to like Low-G Planets, whose temperature is between 194 K (-79.15 C) and 379 K (105.85 C).
  • They do not produce a POI circle on the ship scanner, so far, so they have to be spotted by eye.
  • here is how they show on the SRV Wave Scanner:
  • They are made by a central structure, very Earth Barnacle-like, plus 17 spikes around it, with glowing green seeds/pods attached to them.
  • The central structure has a very peculiar SYMBOL marked on it: some are speculating it represents the Barnard's Loop, others are speculating it could represent the Large Magellanic Cloud. But The Pleiades Nebula viewed from a particular angle could be the easier guess.
  • Looking inside the central structure a pattern made of some green patches can be seen:
  • Two of the 17 spikes hold a Meta-Alloys seed: shooting them they release a maximum of two Meta-Alloys "pods/seeds".
  • The other spikes release any kind of materials included the very rare ones (Detailed Chemical Analysis).
  • They emit very weird sounds, some of them VERY SIMILAR TO THE UA, the purrs are exactly the SAME: and when sped up we can hear the same Tuba Notes we already heard on the UA:
  • They emit a RUMBLING SOUND like something is happening underground, below them.
  • The central structure and the two Meta-Alloys spikes, produce a green cloud/smoke very similar to the UA.
  • The central structure and the two Meta-Alloys spikes, produce the same sparkles/fireflies as the UA.
  • THERE IS NO MORSE in the Barnacle's sound as far as I can hear.
  • Deploying an UA close to a Barnacle doesn't seem to have any effect.
  • In the crashed Anaconda site, some crates were found: they had some mysterious company name written on them:
    CAINE-MASSEY, could it be associated with the C shaped symbol seen on the Barnacles:
    Anyway, those crates are present in any anaconda crash site found so far, so it's highly unlikely that they could be somehow linked to the Barnacles.

BARNACLE AND UA CONNECTIONS

  • Barnacle's Low Purrs are IDENTICAL to a free floater's.
  • The blue fireflies effect is almost the same.
  • The green cloud/smoke is very similar.
  • The green markings on the central structure have similarities with the mayan like markings on the UA pods.
  • Meta-Alloys seem to heal the troubled Stations (Prof. Palin confirmed that UAs are causing the malfunctions).


THEORIES
  • Barnacles could be an Alien version of our Mining Facilities/Extraction outposts, with meta-alloys being a product of their mining activity. They collect standard material to produce Meta-Alloys.
  • The UA could be produced by them, then sent to space, to look for other places to colonize/reproduce: a Probe/incubator then.
  • Tinfoil WARNING: The Barnacles could have been "sent" in various Nebulae by their "creators": but each nebula could have a different Barnacle MARKING, depicting that nebula viewed from their creators' HomeWorld.
    Finding more nebulae, and using their unique Barnacles Marking, we could be able to triangulate their HomeWorld location.
  • Barnacles could be an evolution of the UA, another stage of it.

THE UNKNOWN ARTEFACT (UA or AEO)

In-game description:
Only recently discovered, these mysterious artefacts currently have no designation. Despite much conjecture as to the nature of these objects, it appears that the scientific community is unwilling or unable to openly identify the artefacts' origins. Such mystery only serves to make these objects more widely sought after by wealthy individuals and organisations alike, no matter that their unidentified status automatically prohibits them form being sold on any legal market.

WHERE TO FIND A UA
Since 1.4 was released UAs can be found in systems that are between 135 and 150 Ly from Merope, with Merope being the center of what we now call "The Shell". There is a list of confirmed systems in the Canonn Scientific Data Archive: 1.4 UA Spawn Systems. In these systems a single UA will appear as salvage in most Strong Signal Sources. Usually a SSS will appear within a few minutes of arrival in the system but it has been known to take up to about 30 minutes. Our recommendation is that if you don’t find a UA (in a system that is the correct distance from Merope) within 10 minutes then try another system.
Prior to 1.4, salvage (aka “free-floating”) UAs could be found in systems near (or in) the Pleiades nebula, though they were much rarer than they are now. It would regularly take eight hours or longer to find a single UA. These salvage UAs were only confirmed in 1.3 but may have also existed in 1.2. Exactly which systems they appear in was difficult to determine due to their rarity. In both 1.2 and 1.3 UAs could also be found in heavily armed convoys found in SSS in systems in the bubble. These convoys were easily identified by the distinctive local comms chatter broadcast by the Type-9 carrying the UA.
UA carrying convoys have been recently sighted in Horizons, in system HIP 15609.
After 2.1 release, they now drop an Unknown Fragment (one of the 12 pods, to be precise), if blown-up.


WHAT THEY ARE KNOWN TO DO
  • The first thing you may notice is that they scan your ship. This happens as soon as you close to within 1000m of the UA (which may happen as soon as you drop into the SSS).
  • The UA will orient itself so the that the spherical/bulbous end points towards Merope system (and Merope star when inside the system). A UA that is bumped will reorient itself. There have been a small number of cases where a UA has been seen not oriented toward Merope; it is unknown whether this is significant behaviour or a bug.
  • UAs broadcast a complex audio signal. Part of the signal has been decoded. It is a highly stylised Morse code transmission consisting of blocks of 6 letters. When each pair of letters is taken as coordinates and each block is interpreted as a triangle the resulting diagram is a primitive drawing of the just scanned (i.e. your) ship.
  • When scooped you’ll notice that UAs are toxic cargo and cause damage to the internal components of your ship. If not mitigated they will corrode the cargo hatch to the point where it fails and then fall out. This damage increases if multiple UAs are carried.
  • UAs are illegal throughout the bubble but can be sold at black markets.
  • Free floater UAs do not decay and produce a very clear and neat sound: 1st Howl, morse chittering, 3 Purrs, 2nd Howl -> repeat. After an UA is scooped and then jettisoned again, it starts decaying and the sound becomes different in some parts: there is a loud high pitched Background noise, most probably linked to its decaying state, making the morse harder to spot, and the Purrs become 5/6. Near the UA end, around 10% health, the BG sound disappear, and the UA sound is again similar to the free floater's. Then the UA dies screaming, in a very peculiar explosion, showing some kind of very fast jet shooting from it, in the direction of its axis.
  • If deployed from SRV it morses the name of the Planet and it does not decay like it does if deployed from Ship.
  • After 2.1 release, they now drop an Unknown Fragment (one of the 12 pods, to be precise), if blown-up.

TIPS FOR OWNERSHIP

Generally a single UA is quite easy to care for, but you will have to be careful carrying more than a couple. The primary concern is the internal systems damage. Here are some tips to handle this:

  • First and foremost keep an eye on your cargo hatch. If it fails in normal space you can usually recover any cargo that falls out, provided you notice. However if it fails in supercruise then you are out of luck.
  • Carry one or more Auto Field-Maintenance Units. You need to keep your cargo hatch above 75-80% to prevent malfunctions.
  • Carry some additional (less valuable) cargo so that if your cargo hatch does fail you won’t necessarily lose the UA.
  • Have a lot of modules. The more modules in your ship, the more the damage will be spread out and the less your cargo hatch will suffer.
  • If you’re travelling long distance, jump quickly. From the time you arrive in a system you have 30 seconds until the first damage occurs. If you can scoop fuel (if necessary), find your next destination, and get to the jump countdown before the damage triggers, then you will avoid all damage in that system and get a new 30 second window in the next system. UAs have successfully been taken to Sagittarius A* this way.
  • If you’re carrying 3 or more UAs, you need to be lucky. More than two UAs hitting the cargo hatch simultaneously can cause it to malfunction even if it was at 100%.


HISTORY IN BRIEF



  • Existence of the UAs was foreshadowed in the trailer for 1.2: the point-of-view character was allegedly transporting one to Leonard Nimoy Station in LHS 3006 (though note there were no signs of module degradation as would be expected if a UA was actually on board).
  • Arcanonn (whose name “The Canonn” is derived from) started a thread about the various mysteries and hints that appeared around 1.2. The thread quickly focused on the UAs. Michael Brookes asked if we had “listened to them”.
  • After much searching we managed to find UAs being carried by large, heavily armed convoys found in Strong Signal Sources in various systems. The Type-9 carrying the UA in these convoys broadcast unusual chat messages about the UA.
  • The first UA was recovered from such a convoy in Timocani and we immediately noticed it’s odd appearance, the distortion and particle cloud effects, it’s unique audio, and the damage it does to internal systems (apparently identical to toxic waste canisters). Through most of 1.2 and 1.3 UAs were recovered from these convoys at a rate of about 1 per week or two.
  • Much effort was spent trying to figure out if there was any sort of message to be found in the audio. Eventually (after 1.3 was released) it was confirmed that one of the audio components was Morse code for the name of the nearest celestial body.
  • Towards the end of 1.3, right when a debate was going on about the Seven Marking on the UA being a possible hint to the Seven Sisters (The Pleiades), an XBox player found a UA floating as salvage in a SSS in HR 1185 (which is near the Pleiades nebula). It quickly became apparently that these “free-floating” UAs were much easier to find than the convoys. UAs were being recovered at a rate of one every day or so.
  • The 1.4 beta revealed new behaviour which has been since confirmed in 1.4 proper: UAs in space now orient themselves to point towards Merope. If they are nudged they will quickly turn to realign themselves. They also scan ships that approach within 1000m.
  • Near the end of the beta it was discovered that systems near Aries Dark Region GW-W d1-52 produce free-floating UAs at a much higher rate than previous seen. Typically a SSS containing a UA will be found in that system within minutes of arrival. This also occurs in 1.4 proper.
  • A couple of Galnet articles announced the creation of a Federal research programme under Professor Ishmael Palin to investigate the UAs, and then the termination of said programme only days later. Apparently the Federation knows something about these things and isn’t interested in sharing. The Empire and the Alliance have both been suspiciously silent.
  • In 1.4 we discovered that the Morse code broadcast by the UA had changed. Instead of a celestial body name it was a series of semi-random letters. The signals are coordinates defining 2D triangles that make up a crude line drawing of the ship that the UA just scanned.
  • The systems known to spawn free-floating UAs have been found to form a shell around Merope, between 135 and 150 Ly from that system.
  • Galnet reported technical difficulties plaguing first the Warkushanui system and then 49 Arietis as well. The articles suggest the UAs may be the cause though this is currently unconfirmed.
  • Galnet reported that Professor Palin has restarted his research program independently of the Federation at Christian Dock in the Nganji system.
  • A CG made a Station on the Pleiades a reality: Obsidian Orbital in Maia.
  • Elite Dangerous: Horizons released. Something mysteryous and added in game.very Alien-like is briefly shown on the launch Trailer.
  • Meta-Alloys are a new and very interesting commodity added in 2.0 - Barnacles are first mentioned in their description.

Ancient Ruins FAQ

Canonn is collecting new site layouts - check their post. If you want to work out which scans you can get from a ruin then the Canonn Maps are ... canonical. dognosh has another guide which looks easier to follow if you want the CR :) Canonn now have a route on their site

How do I start the mission?

  1. You need Horizons (you're going to need to land on planets).
  2. Go to Meene system, land at Felice Dock.
  3. Check your Mission view - you should have received a mission from Ram Tah (He's an engineer, you don't need to unlock him).


I handed in the mission - can I get it again?

Yes, just take off and re-land, you should get the mission again (it just appears in the missions tab, you don't have get find it on the mission board). You can collect the reward multiple times. The timer resets when you restart, so you can have more time, and you can claim rewards multiple times. You must claim the reward at the station where you picked it up - which can be anywhere in Meene - if you don't have the option to claim the reward you probably picked it up elsewhere.


What ship specifications?

  • You ideally want 12t of cargo space free for items
  • A discovery scanner (to find the planet)
  • A landing suite and an SRV (more if you have room).
  • Materials for SRV fuel (definitely)
  • Materials SRV repair (optional as your ship can repair the SRV, but useful)


Where do I go?

There are multiple layouts of ruin, and also variations on those ruins. The layouts are called alpha, beta, gamma. You will need to visit many to complete the mission. At the ruin sites there are
obelisks that light up, and you need to select and scan them to retrieve data messages. The goal is to retrieve 101 messages and get the 111 Million CR reward.

You have two choices, scanning the known ruins (to finish the mission and for CR) or trying to find new ruins (there are many) for kudos :)



Where do I scan ruins

There is a route optimiser to help work out which sites you need to visit - pick one to visit : http://edshipyard.com/gsopt.html (choose how far you want to travel and hit optimize, then 'detailed' if you want an exact route to follow or 'export' just for a list of sites)

To get to the ruin fly to the stated system, then to the planet. Once you get within 1000ls you will see Ancient Ruins appear in the system panel, and you can use these to get to the sites. You probably won't see the sites until you are with 5km. Note that many planets have several ruins, so check you are at the right one (matching lat/long on HUD).

You will need some items on board. There are five different ancient artefacts spread around the site, and an ancient relic. Ideally you want two of each (there are multiple of each lying around). You can use the same items at all sites. Items spawn at different locations on different sites - there is no definitive list. It's usually easiest to find objects at a 'Beta' type site (as it is the smallest and flattest. Don't forget to check just outside the perimeter as several usually are found there.

Collect artefacts and relics in solo (people will have probably moved/taken them in open).

Use the cargo scoop to pick up artefacts (you can shoot the rocks around them to make this easier, or try boosting over the rocks). Relics are initially underground, when you get close they will raise up on pillars and you can shoot them down (scan one first if you like!). Take artefacts back to the ship as you find them as you only can hold two in the SRV :(

You should now have:
  • 2 Urn
  • 2 Totem
  • 2 Casket
  • 2 Orb
  • 2 Tablet
  • 2 Relics

Now what?

The goal is to collect decoded messages from Ram Tah - they are numbered and in five sets themed around Biology, Language, Culture, History and Technology. You need to collect them all.

There are up to 15 obelisks on the site that are active (they glow blue as you approach). Targeting and scanning the obelisk (with SRV secondary fire) with the correct item(s) in your SRV hold will give you a message from Ram Tah. Note that these messages can be delayed and are unreliable - look at the mission reward if you want to know that you got a valid combination, it will go up by 1 million per combination found (you can also re-scan after 30 seconds, which usually gets you the delayed message).
In open/private group the active obelisks will change, especially if you exit and rejoin ('relog'), so if you don't see an obelisk you need then relog and it might be active. You can get more results this way, though Frontier only believe that 13 should be available. Now we know where all the combinations are this is no longer the best solution!

Keep a record of which scans you have found, as it is frustrating if you only need one scan and don't know which one. You can go back through the messages you received and narrow down which could be missing - the route optimiser allows you to select a subset of items to look for - click the items on the top row.

There is a 'classic' method to get scans, not sure it it still works:
Really, don't bother now we can solve in solo
Simply hover over the site with the artefacts in your hold - you will get other people's messages (this works in open and in a private group (e.g. Mobius PVE). This could be seen as cheating:) Watch out for griefers in open. Note that you need a group with as many people as possible, as someone needs to be scanning. Also be aware that people see different active obelisks at the same time - this is ... normal. You can get results this way that you cannot normally get from a site. It is unlikely you will complete the mission using this technique, so eventually you will need to scan on the ground.


But what about the other messages we haven't found?
We've now found all the data messages and can complete in solo.



How do I activate other obelisks in solo?
Go to a different site.
Sometimes relogging changes the active obelisks. Some sites have been found to have a different state until the first relog (though if that does not work then further relogs are unlikely to work either - but one is worth a try). But basically find a site which has the obelisk active by default is easier.



Can I hand in the mission now?
Yes - you can hand in the mission (whichever base you got it from in Meene - needs to be the same one!) whenever you like and get the CR. You can even get the mission again from the same location - just go and re-land.

If you get the mission again the delete the messages you got from scanning the obelisks, or you won't get them again (this makes it harder to keep track of what you have done).



Where do we search for more ruins/clues?

Locations of interest are on the first page. It appears there is a 'bubble' in Synuefe / Vela Dark Region where we found the initial site, another cluster on the way to Colonia (near Skaudai), and a cluster in four systems near the Eta Carina nebula.

Here's a way of looking for ruins in systems. It's worth practising on known systems as if you don't see the ruins when they are there you are unlikely to spot new ones. The routine is:

  1. Navigate galaxy area using 'Not Visited' filter and 'Economic' routing to visit the most systems
  2. On entering system check Navigation panel as it shows ruins within 1000ls
  3. 'Honk' the system to see if there are more remote objects
  4. Look at System Map
    • Ruins are on landable planets with a radius between 1000 and 2500km
    • Often in systems with multiple stars (only 4 ruin planets in single-star systems)
    • Often tidally locked (46 out of 53 planets), which you can see on System Map
    • Planets are beige :), so no ice planets (there are 35 High Metal Content, 18 Rocky)
  5. If there are remote suns that look promising then point ship at them (without targeting, as this can obscure the ruins). Ruins will show this way from across a system (way more than 1000ls). Same with planets that look likely but are > 1000ls away

There are other things that are common for ruin locations (temp between 180 & 305, gravity 0.12-0.4), but you need to scan the planet to find that, and by then you've had to visit them, so they've shown in the Nav panel anyway.

Some things that come up, if you could avoid raising them in the thread (unless you have new ideas) that would be cool:
  • There may be clues / locations off-planet (none known) Doesn't seem to be
  • No beacons found in these systems (report any persistent ones - ones that appear after a relog). The Cetes (a Megaship) was found in one system
  • No persistent POI found in these systems on or off world. If you find a POI please relog before reporting
  • Relog means exit to the main game and then go back in (ideally to solo) - you will (probably) get a new game instance so will see if something is persistent across all instances
  • Different shaded squares on planets are usually graphics artefacts, not interesting
  • Background noise on planets is varied and can sound important. If you hear the sound found near the original ruins then you are probably close. If you hear Enya you are probably not!
  • People have considered the various ways to determine which planets to search: similar temperature / reversed rotation / similar moons See above
  • Dropping artifacts in space does not seem to make them point anywhere (unlike UP)
  • We are aware there is a pattern inside the relic - no-one has worked out what it is, though it seems the same layout as the pattern on the obelisks.
  • Fumeroles and lifeforms have been found. Feel free to report (along with planet / coordinates please). You should also add them to the 'official' thread. 'Braintrees' are especially frequent near ruins. This post (and a couple above) by CMDR Baton are handy in finding likely locations.
  • Sometimes obelisks may appear floating above (or below) ground. This is one of many reported bugs.
  • Melville went looking for ruins and apparently found unique ruins (still to be found by us). We found his ship.

For the active sites

You'll need a UP & UA - the UA or UP or UL opens the door to the structure, you will need both all three inside (UL is found inside)

  1. Get a Corrosion Resistant Cargo Rack (CRCR) from Palin in Maia (you need to have unlocked him) - if you don't have a CRCR then the UP/UA will attack your ship
  2. Find a UP: You need an ammonia world from particular locations - here - look for Degraded Emission [Threat 2] USS around it. Get to the distance in the 5th column, go to speed between 210 & 350 km/s (see this post) and wait (maintaining distance approximately) - will probably take at least 30 mins to spawn (other similar methods here, here and here). There has been speculation that wide angle scanners help. But probably not.
  3. Find a UA: Easiest to find at the alien crash sites (which are not the same as the wreck sites! - search FP (you are on it :)) for 'Alien Wreck' or go to HIP 17403 Planet A 4 A Coord: -34.96 / -141.37. Alien Wreck markers are bugged so don't bother trying to follow them to the wreck.
  4. Go to site (e.g. US05 HIP 14909 2 A Lat: -26.44 Long: -27.47) land near the structure (Open makes it easier to find the structure as the whole site is huge and all the other CMDRs might be there). Put the UA and UP in the SRV Note: Some CMDRs see a bug with the UP so cannot transfer it to SRV (transaction error) - you need to jettison it from your ship & scoop it back up in the SRV. Try the transfer first as a transaction error while the UP is on the floor will lose it for you!
  5. Now the structure will open when you approach an entrance
  6. Find a side-room (towards the outside of the structure - there are multiple - here's a map). Unknown Links will spawn. Shoot one down for later. You don't need the UP to get the UL, so you could place that first and avoid having to come back for the UL (not recommended, if you place the UA or UP in the machine and a UL does not spown you will lose the UA/UP in the machine). If the UL does not spawn relog (after picking up any items you have dropped) and it should work.
  7. Go to the central chamber. There are green squares on the floor - drive over one and the swirly lights will indicate which item matches (one each for UA, UP, UL). In the bay with the green square jettison the appropriate item. Repeat for all 3 (you need to go back and find the UL)
  8. Scan the central column (data link scanner) to see what happens
  9. Remember to take the UA/UP/UL back to your ship!
  10. You should now have 3 messages, you can decode the spectrogram in them
  11. take an UL, drop it in space and play it one of the messages you get at the Wreck then it plays a message. This encodes distances (same method as UP), which are being decoded. Another summary here, and yet another . Post about how to record the audio. Video about decoding the audio
  12. Once in a target system you can drop the UL in space and play it the audio again then a beam will point to the wreck location (near end of clip) This allowed discovery of sites 6 onwards. The UL degrades in space so do not leave it out when you are done, or it will vanish.

  • You can sometimes get flower-ships visiting you after a visit to the active wreck
  • Don't feed the wreck Ancient Relics, apparently they don't react well to The Guardians tech :)
  • Sites are also called Wrecks and sometimes Shipments (due to the argument 'is it s a Ship or Settlement') - this is a joke portmanteau :)
  • One of the FD artists published artwork for the US that calls it a hatchery, especially the room with the UL, but possibly the whole site. (post on thread)

I got a mission to unlock an Engineer called Colonol Burnett which failed due to being to slow.

I don't remember seeing the mission appear so I didn't do it.

It may be a glitch for a future engineer.

I recently unlocked a lot of permit locked systems so it may be related to that so I am going to retrace my steps
 
I got a mission to unlock an Engineer called Colonol Burnett which failed due to being to slow.

I don't remember seeing the mission appear so I didn't do it.

It may be a glitch for a future engineer.

Interesting. What were you doing? Did you gain allied status with some faction when you got the message?

Seems that Colonel Burnett is the person representing the faction you did something for.
