What's the range on spotting the tiniest hint of something from a distance? I thought it was only a couple of km max?

o7
with my settings (all Ultra, except bloom & blurr of, Terrain material low, teraain work max) i can spot Elmo from 6 km alt and some 10 km away (daylight) and 4 km Alt / 6 km out at nighttime. Propose to everybody who goes searching to find their optimum settings/distances at known sites first

So, taken a read through the article now... think these are the key takehomes:

He claims to have information that will help us find more sites, but he's keeping it close to his chest. Only he and the pilot know where we're going. It's like he's afraid someone will take credit for his discovery. We've been scanning lifeless planetoids for days, eyeballing the ground for locations.

He keeps reciting the same little speech: "Xeno-achaeology has moved on. The days of exploring the outer reaches, only occasionally finding something of value, are behind us. I have found the key."
There's actually a way to pinpoint the sites without the MK1 eyeball.

The Guardians could well have had a huge civilisation, with hundreds of sites – maybe thousands – in this part of space. The similarities across different sites are comparable to the way we reuse certain structures. After all, how many Coriolis stations are there in the galaxy?
Stop whinging about duplicate sites ;)

There are basically three different types of site, most of which have a different codex layout. Melville thinks that each type of site fulfilled a different function. He also thinks the Guardians were the dominant species in this region of space. But he's not content with this discovery. He wants to keep going.
We've had bad luck in getting the same layout for every dupe so far.

I will now head off to the new systems, scan them, then get some screenshots in (and search for the best planets to add to the list).

Please don't repeat the entire post every time you post

Not that much to get excited about - as Melville points out - just like seeing another Coriolis station :)

Not talking about the shapes of sites, talking about the cluster of systems. If the Guardians were migrating. The spot they started at would be very dense with structures. More dense than the systems we know about now.

As much as I want you to be right about this, I think the bit about "scanning lifeless planetoids for days, eyeballing the ground for locations" suggests that we're stuck with the ol' Mk1.

Yep!

Guys, we probably need to find the Ship of Melville first !

Why not? Every site so far is tidally locked. (The original is, it just appears to be concealed by the way Galmap does evaluation of whether to say 'Tidally Locked')

No, they're not. The dwarf star that the 1st planet rotates around rises and sets, therefore the planet is not tidally locked to it.

If there is the possibility of each new system mentioned containing one of each of the different types of ruin site, then is it possible that this is true of all systems that contain a site? If so which is the smallest of all of the known systems that contain sites?

"Xeno-achaeology" - I wonder what's that is the science of?

Hmmm... Melville wasn't he the one who wrote about a obsessional hunt (for a white whale?)

It's worth a look if nothing else....
