  • Does it happen at RIPE Barnacle sites in other systems?
  • If not, is it connected to the Ammonia World in this system?

Now that it's been confirmed at all three sites in Pleiades Sector OI-T c3-7, the next most likely site imo is:

Pleiades Sector RO-Q b5-0 4 -23.6, 70.94

It matches almost all of the properties:
  • Ripe
  • Unguarded
  • Double
  • System with an Ammonia World

It doesn't have an Imperial base in the system though (or any base).

A number of us are gathering there to see… nothing so far

I'd often suspected that Barnacles were used as some sort of resource harvesting mechanism, since they obviously produce meta-alloys.

Think about it: they place these things on worlds with a high metal content, the barnacles act like little refineries and process the natural resources into meta-alloys, as well as whatever else the ships need. Then they act as pit-stops.

Decisions, decisions, decisions. Here I am, just reached Jellyfish nebula, and the asteroid base, there. Have sold my data so that's no longer an issues. I was going to head out towards the rim and continue in a spiral to the core but this recent event is wetting my appetite for some alien encounters. Hmmmm...do I just self destruct, take the rebuy hit and head out to the barnacles, or begin the journey back. Think I know what I'll do. Alien stuff is to juicy for me to not experience first hand. I can still start my journey to the core another time. I love being out in the black but I love alien stuff much more. Hopefully have my own story to tell soon

Edit: Well, that's a no go. Guess Multi-crew is the way to go. Or just start making my wake back, guess I'll get some more exploration credits out of it. Didn't realize the asteroid base in jellyfish has no shipyard or outfitting so it's either sacrifice my Conda and all the work I've put into it or at least get to seagull's asteroid base where I can transfer into a small ship. Granted that's another 2,000 ly away and if I can do 2,000 might as well push it to 4,000 to get back to the pleiades

If you self destruct, you'll respawn at the station in jellyfish nebula, unless you sacrifice your entire ship, not just the rebuy.
Edit: arr, ninjaded

Atched a couple of those videos.

Lol at the ramming attempt in the 1st one - looks like the rammer got hit by and interrupted the 'harvesting' beam.

The pulling effect seems to be quite narrow area, the other SRV didn't get pulled up - SRV didn't have any effect on the 'harvesting' beam when it tumbled through the beam.

Yeah, I spaced that aspect, so, I'm going to make the "quick" way home. In the end, like I stated, the benefit will be getting the credits and the fact that the rank I'll earn will the last one I need before working towards elite!

There's double sites in California and Witch Head nebulas... do we need to check there too?.

Funnily enough I was scanning barnacles like a madman all today and yesterday in the California Nebula. I suspect the event got turned on sometime this evening (US Time) maybe? I'll be scanning away tomorrow for sure. I'll report back here with any news!

Check everything! Doubles, singles, guarded, unguarded, ripe, dead… it's all unanswered at this point!

is it worth trying to coordinate so we get max coverage of barnacle sites (or throw together somethng to record encounters)? Guess we should be trying to figure out if there's a pattern, though since this seems non-interactive I'm not convinced it's worthy of the effort.

All a bit moot for me out here in Eta Carina looking for ruins :(

And even more important - what do we call this type of encounter :)

I have this feeling that the barnacles are engineered by the owners of these ships to act like fuel processing depots. Didn't Braben say that barnacles harvest materials from a planet and convert it into all sorts of by-products and materials that we (humans) can use? Perhaps for these aliens, the main by-product is a fuel they can use or a power source like recharging a battery?

I was out in Cal neb, checking barnacles yesterday to. Now this happens and of course I'm going away for the weekend.

Watching the SRV getting pulled up in some of the videos made me think "Elite: Atari Defender Edition". :p

They seem so...organic. Like as if they are family, a mother feeding her baby. But the consensus is that the ship is taking something, right?

Then again, we don't know how big the barnacles are underground, do we? Maybe the barnacles are the mum.

Very cool videos.

:D

Greetings! Found out about this new encounter a little while ago. Upon watching the CFN video, I had a weird idea. I know this sounds like a "Hurr durr use an artifact." suggestion, which always follows a new encounter, but I think this one may have some merit. Note that the beam appears to be able to pick up items in close proximity to the barnacle. What if we dropped a UA/UP within that pickup radius before the ship came in? Maybe it would interact in some way. I'd likely look into this myself, but it's late/early and I've just departed from Colonia, bound for Sagittarius A. Good luck going forward. I'll be following your progress from the black.

Somebody posted pics in the thread on the main forum of it happening at the location of a destroyed/harvested barnacle.

The condition of the barnacle doesn't seem to matter.

PS: In addition to energy/fuel another possibility for what they pick up is offspring. Maybe barnacles are where Thargoids are generated. :p
