Hardware & Technical Am I the only one unimpressed with Oculus DK2?

I took delivery yesterday and after a lot of fiddling have it working in E: D.

Yes, it's much more immersive than playing on a single monitor. The positional tracking is cool, and the general VR feel is great too.

BUT, the resolution absolutely sucks. Pixels, pixels everywhere. Hard to read text. Orangeish outlines around objects if not situated directly in front of the camera (i.e. if you slouch in your set). "White" stars with rainbow-coloured outlines. Not to mention is looks a bit blurry at times (have tried both lenses, and stuck As as my vision is 20/20). Oh, and the wires/leads are too short for anyone not situated at a desk. I realize some have had success extending. Also way too fiddly to set up - which of course can be partly excused by virtue of this being a development kit. Build quality is OK, but unfortunately my left side adjuster is loose, so it keeps "auto"adjusting when I take it off or put it on.

I'd give Oculus a 10/10 for effort, but a 6 out of 10 for execution. Perhaps my fondness for the thing will grow, but it's far from perfect. I may revert back to playing on a big screen TV for crisper imagery and forego the VR experience until CV1 comes out.

Am I the only one who feels this way????

Your brain will get used to the lower res over time. I wanted to like the DK1 and just carried on using it until I didn't really notice the screen door effect or the low pixel count.

Monitors just seem horrible in comparison to VR now.

On the rift hardware: Considering that it is a development kit and has been strongly discouraged by Oculus Vr for casual purchase, your criticism is kind of directed at the wrong place. I'd put in a bug report with Oculus Vr for them to consider and improve from your 6/10 score.

On ED: - Note that the game is currently playing through an obsolete driver (3.x SDK) and while it is working in legacy mode, much of the degradation is probably related. Until the beta properly supports the latest underlying driver (and likely direct mode), I'd hold off on the heavy criticism for a bit - it's bound to get better as more support is enabled.

At the very least, I'd expect the graphical fidelity to nearly match the configuration utility demo screen once proper driver support is in the game. For the SDE, it will probably still be noticeable if one looks for it at 4K as the pixel size will still be larger than the eye minimum acuity but is easy to ignore. Last, this DK is only a stepping stone to a hopefully much better working consumer product, so things will continue to improve.

nope, i've seen similar comments from other users, the one caveat being that its called the Developers Kit for a reason, its a work in progress and not a retail quality product.

i hope that they do improve the resolution before CV1, i can't see it going retail until they do and as this product gives me a serious case of the 'I want it, ' but only if they get the quality of the display up to a usable standard.

Yeah, but if people think they are entitled to graphic quality equal to their monitors with CV1, then they are deluded.

At the moment, it's the graphical equivalent of jumping into a warm pool from a hot one, it's not that bad but feels like it is in comparison. CV1 will be better but people are stupid and will expect more.

I honestly don't understand people who, despite all recommendations, buy a DEVELOPPER's kit, aimed at professionals so they can create software for the upcoming peripheral, and then go to forums and complain about the wires, the difficulty to set up, the bugs and the bad implementation... in the beta version of a game to top it all off.

Regular customers aren't even supposed to own the device yet, so how can they complain about flaws that are obviously due to the product not being a consumer version ?

Personnaly, even if I had the money to spare, I'd rather keep it for the real deal, so that I discover the experience as the creators intended it, instead of ruining the surprise for myself by purchasing an object that's aimed at peopld who are working and not people who want to have fun. I understand enthusiasts who want to jump in right now, of course, but these people shouldn't complain about problems that will certainly be fixed in the retail version when they knew what they were getting into from the get go.

Beta + Beta != Finished product...

I have problems with everything separating, the colors of the text split apart on me and I can't read them, text for the most part is completely unreadable, they can't account for my colorblindness when using orange as the primary color.

Nope, I do not see the "Bad Impression" you are trying to portray.

The fact the echo's I hear inside the station match the perceived "feel" of the size is utterly fantastic. The fact I can target something just by looking at it (and saying "Target") is hands down above the experience I get with my monitors.

So, again, Nope. I do not see where you are coming from.

I agree with the OP, I tried the Oculus Rift DK2 at Fantasticon and although the immersion was nice I immediately noticed that I couldnt tell what ship I was firing at because of the pixellated resolution. Most of EDs combat takes place at a distance and you just cannot see it in the OR at its present resolution. Its like trying to play ED on a small standard TV.

I think its probably better for games like Skyrim.

Get an ED tracker with voice attack look at the target and say Target and it locks the target. All for 30 quid and a crisp nice big monitor with text you can read .

Your last comment is not valid to justify a sub standard experience with an expencive development tool that isn not the real deal "yet". :D

I don't own an occulus but I'm positive I saw somewhere on these forums that you need to do some downsampling for it to be bearable - that is, rendering the graphics at a higher resolution than 1080p before drawing them.

Maybe someone can confirm this?

I find it quite unimpressive as well due to the bad resolution.

Can't wait to try Sony's VR tho.

I agree with the OP, the resolution at the moment is not that good.

However, I would definitely buy the commercial release if they improved the resolution.

I also agree with the op and its widely accepted that the resolution is to low.
Complaining about it is another matter. All these petulant children should realise its a developers kit for a reason.

So how many of those people agreeing with the OP or saying that ED tracker does a better job have tried or, even better, own a DK2?

Simple fact is it is not for everyone but, for me, there is no going back. ED and LFS just make sims on an ordinary monitor obsolete to the point that I will not play iRacing or any other sim until DK2 support is added
